[POI--] dasCKD Quality Poster 2,376 posts 18,851 battles Report post #5 Posted April 23, 2018 Ranked is inherently a secondary game type with its tier restriction which means that far fewer players will be on. It's just to make sure that people can get games quickly in most hours of the day.
[OGHF] Cyclops_ Players 1,908 posts 31,032 battles Report post #6 Posted April 23, 2018 In my mind, it is easier to get 7 players that are strangers to each other to work as a team than it is to get 12 players that are strangers to each other to play as a team in ranked anyway.
[PRT] it3llig3nc3 Beta Tester 668 posts 8,031 battles Report post #7 Posted April 23, 2018 Anybody asking this question must think about how MM works? Also consider the player population at any time on-line. On EU we are around 30k online players evening PEAK(!!) time. 7vs7 is very reasonable as long as this level of activity is typical (just in comparison WOT EU PEAK is 200k players)

Indeed, due to us being all working ages and having real lives we had many days when we couldn't field a Clan Wars team at only 7 required, even maxed out a Clan is limited to 50 members (which is why there are so many clans with sister clans) and they all have to be in the same tag to be in a team. With prime times and busy lives it would be a major challenge for many clans to field a team bigger than 7. Not forgetting a 7v7 format is a nice change from 12v12 ordinary randoms. I've had some great battles at stupid late/early times where the MM has thrown up randoms with 9, 7, 5 a side, it's a lot of fun or can be if people play as a team. Short answer: Why not? [NECRO] Deckeru_Maiku Beta Tester 6,576 posts 24,068 battles Report post #12 Posted April 23, 2018 I see it the other way 'round: why isn't random battle 7 vs. 7 too, instead of 12 vs. 12 and filled with potatoes... For me it is "less players per team equals more fun for all" and imho less players also means the game would get more tactical, as teams would have to think where to attack/defend, with not enough ships to attack/defend everywhere at the same time. One of the most fun games I had recently was a.. wait for it... 3 vs 3 battle... okay, it was at T3 (with me in my Mikasa) but it was a random battle, no PvE one... [TOXIC] eliastion Players 4,795 posts 12,260 battles Report post #14 Posted April 23, 2018 14 hours ago, Jack_Sparrow123 said: hm why? Clan Battles: A full clan (40 people) would need 30% of all the members to be available and willing at the same time to even assemble a team for Clan Wars. Smaller/not fully developed clans and clans where most people don't have that much interest in the "competitive" mode just wouldn't be able to realistically compete. Even the biggest competitive clans would be very unlikely to field more than two divisions at a time. As a result, the number of people effectively excluded would rise and the number of competing teams would fall, making waiting times longer and the matches less evenly matched (even now there are countless complaints about meeting clans more than a full league away from your position). And then there's the fact that coordinating 12 people would be much harder, making the whole thing much more chaotic, even if everyone uses voice communication. Ranked: Rankeds are, first and foremost, an individual mode. You can't compete with a division and while teamplay is essential, the idea is to gauge and reward the skill of the individual player (including the ability to work with a team) - and that is easier if this individual skill is a bigger part of the team's success or defeat. And the impact of each one player increases as the team grows smaller (up to the theoretical maximum at 1v1 where it's all about you and in your hands). When you're 1/7th of your team, playing like sh*t or going AFK makes it very unlikely for you to win the match. When you carry hard, on the other hand, your contribution is much more likely to bring you the victory. Compare a situation in 12vs12 - when you're only 1/12th of the team, your personal impact is much more diluted: there are 11 other people (instead of 6) to make up for your mistakes - or to become a burden impossible to carry. And then there's the fact that in higher Ranks you need to wait for a match quite a bit (unless playing at the height of peak hours - but even then it's hardly instantaneous). If it was 12vs12 instead of 7v7, you'd need that much more players for each team, making waiting times even longer. Currently to play in the Premier League outside peak hours you need patience. With 12vs12 it would be pretty much impossible. And that's on EU server that - if I'm not mistaken - is better populated than NA and Asian servers.
