Cruisers in a cyclone

I currently struggle to find much use for my cruiser in a cyclone. Most of the time I just find an enemy BB in a position I didn't expect him in and get oneshotted (8km doesn't give you much of a reaction time). Even if I have a friendly BB spotting in front of me, trying to help him engage an enemy BB will just lead to that BB ignoring mine and focussing me until I turn away due to heavy damage. Radar cruisers are somewhat playable as you can ambush enemy DDs, and it gives you some short spotting beyond the 8km, but it is still hard to play.

 

Are there some cruiser mains here with some tips on what to do?

Never be the one initiating first contact unless you have no other choice. Let your tankier/sneakier teammates go first if possible.

Try to go for an off angle so that a BB has to turn his guns all the way around to engage you. Chances are that he will ignore you but even if he doesn't, that buys you time you'll desperately need.

Follow the tracers of your frontmost teammates. Sometimes you can accurately engage targets outside spotting range with that.

Keep your side at autobounce angle, don't go full bow in unless you know that the enemy BB can't overmatch it.

Use torps if available but don't rely on them unless you can guarantee a kill. Even the most mediocre BB will predict you'll launch torps at him and act accordingly.

If all else fails, disengage before your enemy comes into spotting range. There is nothing cowardly about running away from a fight you cannot win. Regroup with some teammates then push as a force.

depends pretty much completely on what kind of cruiser you're playing... a Hindenburg for example is an absolute goddess in a cyclone when running into a BB, while a Minotaur is usually very very sad really quickly

IJN Cruisers can actually ambush enemies with their long range torps (provided no own ships in-between), can usually just shoot at estimated course and score some hits, just as long as you have estimated course. Atago can also rush-torp a BB and so can Hipper or any other German Cruiser in fact - Also managed that in a Graf Spee once... Otherwise I'd recommend just to play defensive and escort own ships. :cap_old:

Yup! Its Christmas comes early if you get a Cyclone in the Hinden. Almost impossible for BBs to Cit you at that range and youre torps will usually devestate 2 T10 BBs if you slide in between them.

Heck even a battleship with its guns aiming the right way is a huge problem for many of them....I once met a Udaloi in my Amagi like that a couple months ago... He just vanished.

My last bad experience of cyclones was running into a Flint when in my Leningrad... needles to say it did not end well (for me). Cyclones can be very tough.

First activate last known position on minimap

 

second try to get to some teammates

 

3rd and Very Important when u meet enemy BB

 

...put your badass face

(case 1)

change your direction to enemy BB

when he fires pres A or D with SSSSSS

release A or D and pres WWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Torp the bas***d

 

(case 2 if u dont have torps on ur boat)

aproach LKP hit Radar

burn the BB if u can flee

if u cant

change your direction to enemy BB

when he fires pres A or D with SSSSSS

release A or D and pres WWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

while shooting at him with APs or HEs depends

repeat until he is dead.

Please, cyclones are amazing for CVs. The ability to straight up ignore AA until 2km is a death sentence for any ship, including no fly zones.

(Funnily enough DFAA still works even if the AA in question can't actually shoot at your planes. It's a psychic ability it seems.)

Well, that is pretty retarded.

 

But on the other hand it is the BBs who suffer the most from it, so it is fine

Any competent BB will make a 180 the moment he sees a cruiser approaching him, since thanks to r*tarded citadels, the cruiser has no way of punishing the BB.

 

Good luck hitting torps on a kiting-away BB, especially since like half of them can almost outrun the cruiser.

Get spotted, make smokescreen.  Escape

 

Not in a RN cruiser?  Now you see your mistake!
