hello,

hopefully that's a right place to ask that question.

EU player here, 170 battles played :cap_rambo:  and I'm starting to get frustrated ^^ .  Wanted to ask, is there someone who would like  to play in Division ?

I want to see and learn how to play properly, I have seen movies (  captains academy, etc. ) read guides but it doesn't seem to help much.

Got USA, IJN, Germany, Pan-Asia DDs up to T5.
I find gunboats difficult but they are rewarding if there is no way to torp someone and due to recent marathon of lost battles I tend to use more guns than torps  :cap_hmm:

Path of sorrow and depression ahead, don't read further if you don't want to :cap_book:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

since 2 days  I have been playing mix of T3-T5 battles but for some odd reason 90% of them is lost and almost every time pattern is the same:

  • for sure there are things that I messed up or could do better
  • domination mode > as DD I rush to cap, spot and more often than not enemy DD pop up with cruisers and BBs behind so I'm forced to run cause there is little to no support of my team ( look below )
  • A. as soon as I leave cap point I notice that most of them is already taken by enemy while our ships seem to just sail aimlessly :cap_fainting:
  • B. lemming train and then flanked
  • 3-4 minutes later our team doesn't exist ( 4 vs 8  )
  • odd feeling that captains sitting in enemy carriers are better... usually slightly before  torp action I'm spotted by planes ( I'm trying to avoid mosquitoes..)  and after that I'm forced to run for my life  -_-
  • enemy carriers seem to look for DDs, annoy and prevent them from torp actions while ours somehow don't seem to be helpful
  • and so my results fluctuate and I'm pissed off :etc_swear:

side note:

community is as toxic as in WoT so I turn off chat.

Today I was called chicken :etc_swear: cause I decided to leave occupied by 3-4 ships including DD cap after my smoke vanished, I got spotted and almost sank Titanic style. Then I noticed I'm 1 of 3 ships staying alive vs 6 ~~

Turn chat back on. There is crap in it, but good stuff as well.

I noticed that I have to turn it off manually every battle haha so it's not that I have it constantly off :)

at the moment haven't found  a way to disable it permanently WoT style :P

You can block toxic players. But generally the chat isn't that toxic in my experience.

On the other hand you do get player giving info or requesting stuff (smoke, support, etc).  This improves the team play and that wins games.

As for the division, I wouldn't mind divving up. But you'd have to wait for a month.

As for general tactics, check where your team is going and what they are doing. If they do a stupid tactic, adapt, follow it, go with the flow and make sure the tactic works. Don't try to take on the entire enemy team on your own because your team went the other way. Unless it's a standard battle, then either help them push faster than the enemy team or delay the enemy team while your team goes for their cap.

In gun boats don't overly rely on the torpedoes. Use guns first or use your spotting. Smoke allies if possible and stay out of the smoke yourself to spot or smoke yourself if allies are able to spot as well.

As for the jianwei in particular, don't fret if you can't get her to work. She has nothing going for her. I'm quite experienced with destroyers and I was struggling to get her to work.

And most (and most difficult) of all, at a loss don't automatically blame your team for your loss. But look what you could've done better.

If you lose a game with full health you didn't take enough risks. If you lose as the last man standing see if at any point you sacrificing yourself would've made a difference.

If you lose with massive amounts of damage done, check if you weren't just farming damage in stead of playing for the win.

But the best tip of all, have fun with what you're doing. Some people seem to forget that sometimes.

thanks for tips, I added you to contacts :cap_tea:

indeed, Jianwei is kind of meh, that's why I returned to abandoned USA DDs to practice gunboating playstyle.

All in all trick is to know when to take a risk and that's something I struggle with :cap_hmm: usually wonder what unicum would have done

Unicums have a lot of experience and a giant toolbox of tactics and counter tactics.

To see what Unicums do, I'd advice checking streams. Flambass for example. He interacts a lot with the viewers and is quite good. You can ask him for specific ships.

Other than that, experience is key.

What can also help is checking your own replays. Hind sight is 20/20 and you can learn a lot from seeing yourself play.

Feel free to add me as well. I don't mind coming along for the ride.

It's kinda boring to play solo anyways as you have nobody to vent to when you lose horribly :)

As for tactics... well stewie already said it well. You can't force people into specific tactics so it's best to try and make work whatever the team picks (assuming they didn't go along with you).

It is better to try and make something work (even if slightly flawed) then to separate yourself from the team completely which can make you nearly irrelevant.

Had fun yesterday...  obviously I wasn't able to constantly look at what you're doing but as far as I know you only managed to put yourself into an extremely bad position once(island blocking your escape and 3 enemies nearby with nothing better to shoot at).

I tried to warn you about it but I was too late.

Anyways the lack of obvious mistakes probably explains the win streak we enjoyed :)

Some Tipps!

a) Learn about your opponents especialy DD - whats their spotting /Torpedo range and how good are their guns (ofcoruse you know this from your own ship:P)

b) Once you know this choose your fight as IJN DD avoid caps at start of battle try to flank and torp keypoints/caps even when theres no ship dedected.

c) Even as gunboat retreat form the cap you wanted to go if you outnumbered by enemy DD and cruiser behind them. Move away and come back later.

d) Smoke - dont think you are save there use it as your !get out of jail! Bonus to retreat and smoke to hide friendly ships especialy cruisers near caps they will help you there and be a nasty surprise for every DD while you spot. Never smoke up in a cap and stay inside  except you got hydro (german DD) or Yolang.

e) Spotting - less rewarding but cruicial to win a battle spotting enemy stealthy cruisers like the RN will force them to hide in theyr smoke and well smoke is a Torpedo magnet. Load your torps into every smoke you see even they usual got hydro up you will get 1 or 2 hits.

f) Minimap - circles on minimap Change gun range to Torpedo range this will help you to check if a last Position ship wich smoked up is in Torpedo range.

Check wheres the enemy main force as IJN you want the big guys BB as gunboat you want to hunt enemy DD going for your BB after cap.

g) Dont chase a lonely BB retreating to A1 or CVs from Tier 6 on cv are almost faster then you and can outrun you and your torps and you will be out of battle for Long time instead go back and cap.

and 1000 other things you Need to know :P

never occured to me that CV can sail faster than 25 knots :cap_book::fish_book: thanks for tips as well !

About minimap you can customize it their is some nice informations to add like last known position of an ennemy ship, Air detection and other stuff.

you should find some tools that will help you in terms of map awarness the best weapon as a DD

He already knows about that and has it setup.

For the life of me I can't figure out why WG would not have stuff like "last known position" enabled by default. I don't know one person that would not have it enabled (once they found out about it)

Guess that is why some people don't understand why I can know that I am being flanked without enemies visible in the direction of my prediction.

Langley and Bogue are total odd balls.

They're pretty much cargo ships with flight deck instead of any actual warships.

Also so called "escort carriers" intended for escorting cargo convoys and transports were usually slower to keep cost down.

But all full size fleet carriers were made to be capable to moving with fleet.

Including some of the smaller ones.

Like Independence class being built on cruiser hull of Cleveland.

Besides game itself there are some sites for finding info about ships, including this:

http://wiki.wargaming.net/en/World_of_Warships

Anyway try to learn rough speeds of different ships.

Even battleship can spot you in bad place if you think they're all slow garden slugs.

Kongo can do near 30 knots and starting from Tier 7 all but Colorado are more or less fast.

(and Scharnhorst is good for eating mistake making destroyers with its fast turret traverse)

So against those you need to time your turn from torp attack early enough.

Along with retreat from cap and smoke. (if no loaded torps/smoke disappearing too soon)

Also some cruisers do 35 knots and few of them are actually faster than slowest DDs.

And darn French cruisers like Emile Bertin were made fool-proof so that player in them can potato and you can't punish them in gunboat:

Every single AP overpens because their citadel was put into submarine.

Where as if some Phoenix/Omaha shows its broadside inside 7km just load AP and aim for hits to near waterline below smoke stacks.

Kirov and Königsberg have even less armor, same for Kuma.

Badly played lightly armored cruisers are food for gunboats.

Also there are mods for game which can give precise info about ships in that "team panel" or what wasthe name of that thing which lists ships of both sides on different sides of monitor.
