How is US CA line (7+) these days?

I have started to play US cruisers when line split was announced. Originally I had no intent to go over Cleveland as I am not really enjoying CA's - am more CL's daka daka fan :)

But as US cruiser split seems to be far far away for now - how is US cruiser line from T7?

I thoroughly enjoy Cleveland - and have high hopes for CL split - even farmed enough xp on Omaha so I can play both new T6 and T8 when it comes :) and bought perma camo for Cleveland...

But I am not sure about CA's... according to forum Pepsicola is horrendous, New Orleans very average, Baltimore bad and Des Moines  situational...

So - pls gimme a reason to play some of these :D

Just plagiarized this from the other US CL thread, so these are the ships at least...

Cleveland you know and going to be a tier 8 from now on so good for you. The others? Just check out the reviews in the other thread I guess.:Smile_Default:

Pensacola is the stinker in that line. Can work as a second line support ship tho and the AP punishes cruisers hard.

New Orleans has become quite a decent ship, the AP is good and the very good concealment makes her a good cap supporter. She can also tank other cruisers quite well.

Same for the Baltimore, although the Baltimore is a better ship then the NO.

Des Moines is a beast, it shreds planes, has Radar and the arcs allow her to spam from behind cover.

Pensa, NO and Balti was extremely painful for me but getting the DM was worth it.

I f*cking love that ship to death.

With a 19 point captain and some excess comm-xp you can tailor it to perform multiple roles depending on what your div-mates are running.

Div with a CV, go full AA, help escort the BBs while still be able to deal with DDs that gets too close.

Or div with other cruisers/dds and build a monster of a dd-minotaur killer.

Or go for something inbetween, focus on terrorizing BBs with constant fires while still retaining some AA and dd-killer capabilities.

Mega-fun ship to play if you ask me.

True dat @Jethro_Grey my friend but then they are all CA anyways... The new line is CL, so they are very much an open question so far. And who knows? They might actually improve Pensacola a bit while at it too? :Smile_Default:

As for the king of the new line, Worchester... I suspect it might be just like its namesake sauce. A mysterious, complex, yet distinct and versatile ship to be savored by the connoisseur. :Smile_izmena:

Don't know about you guys, I love my Pensa. Sure, it's made out of citadels and oil paper but with the amazing manoeuvrability you're generally ok if you stay at a bit of a distance. Guns are fantastic as well.

Wondering how the Cleve will be balanced for tier VIII. Hopefully a return to its Beta glory days? :cap_rambo:

I loved Pensa. Taught me how to dodge incoming and predict as everyone and their dog wants a piece of Pensa cits!

Her manoeuvrability and strong AP was great fun.

NO is better but she faces higher tiers.  I've not quite got to grasps with her as because of her radar and stealth abilities I can't stop myself going in for close cap support. And invariably getting obliterated.

Pensa plays at midrange where you have time to duck and dive.  I think that and Island hogging is the way forward.

Their strong AP and AA makes up for their lack of torps and it's a different but fun line to grind.

Keep in mind that what you read is often outdated, buffs were handed out.

That being said I think it's a bad line for people that are new(ish) to the game, but on the other hand it teaches you how to cruiser.

Pensa is fine.

NO would be fine except for MM

Balti is fine once you get the upgraded guns.

Des Moines is fine.

They just have a very particular playstyle, I hardly ever play Des Moines (I sold the rest) because I can't stand the find rock, shoot over rock, repeat at nauseam thingy.

Well @Taliesn, you could always config her as a dedicated DD hunter with Radar and Hydro and follow the DD's to cap. Very High risk, but definitely fun. :Smile_great:

Works well, if your DD is not braindead and gives you smoke, otherwise you get plastered. Avoid tailing a Yugumo with torp booster tho...:Smile_Default:

Pensacola is a excellent ship but not for beginners. I much preferred her to Cleveland (not enough range) and NO (way too squishy). Usually US CA line is more fragile than others, has less range than Russian and German counterparts but have better canons (better dpm mainly).

Hheeey!:Smile_amazed: I could swear that the IJN Cruisers are way WAY squishier that their US counterparts tier-per-tier. :Smile_teethhappy:

Well, OK Pensacola might be an exception and the equal of Myoko in terms of overall squishiness tho, but otherwise.:cap_old:

Well that stands true for pretty much any ship... watch any @Flamuu review - these consist mainly from complaining about what a turd of a ship it is... while farming Kraken's left and right with above said turd of a ship :D

I will think about it... but overall current T7-9 does not appeal to me at all. Hope CL split will come soon.

NO at T8 was the most painful thing to play ever.

Lel MM utterly obliterates you as even the "good" USN Cruiser AP cannot reliably pen higher tier cruisers and BBs.

Baltimore and Des Moines are awesome ships however and worth the pain.

Pensacola is decent now, not great but not as awful as it used to be. A problem with it is that I think it will forever be viewed as an XP pinata simply because of its notoriety from its pre-buff state, even though it doesn't really deserve it anymore, so it tends to be shot at by almost everyone whenever it's visible. Still worth playing though.

New Orleans was one of my very least favourite ships in the game, some people say they like it but it absolutely wasn't for me. Decent stealth and AA but that's about it. One of the few ships I've sold! The only saving grace for me was that it seems to have a very generous XP multiplier which made the grind fairly quick.

The Baltimore has been a bit of a roller coaster for me. When it was stock (15 second reload, no super heavy shells, awful range) I thought it was even worse than the New Orleans and I was preparing myself for a miserable journey to the Des Moines, but since fully upgrading it it's become a fantastic ship which I'm really enjoying. Best played in a division with a DD that can smoke you up near caps but even without that it's still a very good ship. Not a tanky ship by any means, 16" shells will overmatch every single part of the ship except for the citadel belt itself, so not one to be played recklessly and just generally steer clear of open water as much as possible but if you can get into some island clusters then you can dominate cap points. Really looking forward to the Des Moines now.

Rather than buy dumb Free XP ships (Musashi) I spend my Free XP on Hull and Gun upgrades etc so grinds I actually want to do are far more comfortable. Balti needs the top guns otherwise you just end up playing a T9 NO with massively outclassed AP :Smile_amazed:

Pensacola is better since its buff (or so I've heard). I never disliked the ship, even in her "poor" state.

I recently unlocked the DM and I like it a lot. Great AA, concealment, radar, AP, reload time.

I loved the Baltimore for the same reasons (it has less DPM though), and I still sail her a lot - even though I have the DM.

NO is still in my port and from time to time I also still sail her, but her AA is not that great and her DPM is even lower.

Conclusion:

nice combo radar + concealment (T8+),

great American AP (T7+),

great AA (T9+)

@Negativvv That pretty much summed up the stock Baltimore, yes. A less stealthy, bigger, less maneuverable NO with a longer reload! Was one of the more difficult ships to justify holding onto my free XP, but I somehow made it. :)

A fully upgraded Balti is a very impressive ship, the guns, reload , AA and forgiving heal. Very underrated by most.

I used to hold onto my FXP then I thought I might as well spend to ease grinds. The pain and wastage of higher tier stock grind with flags and camo almost justify spending FXP reserves. Especially if you're a stats wh0re :Smile_child:

I've played Pensa just recently and am currently at NO.

Pensa is a dificult topic. First of all she is horrible when stock and you want to have at least the turret upgrade on her from the beginning (I played her without it while farming free-xp for Musashi and it reminded me of the "fun" times I had with her in CBT).

Upgraded though she is a good CA and can pack quite the punch. She is still incredibly squishy and dies a lot when you are looked at, but if you can get in a position where that doesn't happen you can get good rounds out of her.

In terms of painful gameplay I have ships worse than her on my personal list.

NO was also played from stock and I'm currently a few matches after having her fully upgraded. Unlike Pensa she is already good when stock and all I did was using captain free-xp to get the captain from 50% to max retraining for Concealment expert.

Now the number one problem I have with her is that of the 14 matches I played only 2 times were t8 and another 3 times t9. The rest were against t10s which puts her in a really horrible position to have influence on matches and it feels less fun to play her than Pensa so far, which doesn't mean that she is a worse ship. Just, that Pensa is in a lot more favourable position based on the difference in t7 vs t8 mm where t7 get down-tiered a lot while t8 gets up-tiered a lot.

Compared to Charles Martel I'm also currently playing Charles seems to be more fun. Thanks to greater range and speed boost you can escape a lot of devastating salvoes because the enemy mis-judges where to aim while NO has to pray that that one stray shell comming your way while turning out doesn't land in her citadel.

Also NO has to be close and personal for radar to work which makes her a favourite target if you can't get in cover behind your favourite islands fast enough.

@Negativvv I'm simply a hopeless ship collector with a major hoarding problem, there are probably 50 or 60 ships in my port I haven't played in over a year. Could never forgive myself if they ever pulled a free XP ship and I was left without it. The pain from grinding through awful stock ships is temporary, the Musashi could be a hole in my heart that never gets filled!

Must admit I can understand that. I'd buy Musashi if I had a huge FXP reserve but thankfully I only have 450k.

I can't see myself playing her over Yam which I've started to enjoy again.

Besides I'll need FXP for PA DD and French BB upgrades....
