Best commander skills for each class? (generally speaking)

Hi all,

Returning refreshed after a year away, I am looking for advice please.  I see that all of my commanders' skills have been reset so I am looking for experienced players' advice on what are generally considered the best skills for each class please, or any unusual or otherwise interesting skill builds that people might have.

For information, as per my signature, I am mostly interested in IJN DD, CL\CA & BB lines - I'm not playing CVs anymore and unlikely to continue with British CL\CA line either (don't want to user free XP and the tier 4 is soul-destroyingly painful for me to play), so will probably only play my IJN ships and the Japlanta ;-)

I've looked for threads but not found any - all I could find were a couple of news articles about the changes but they don't seem to link to any forum threads and I don't really trust WG's own recommended skills... ;-)

Thanks,

Good sum up.

But you overestimate the value of Expert Marksman. There are only some BB where this skills is actually usefull. Most of the time the gain is within 2-4 sec for a full 180° turning! And thus these 2 points are most of the time wasted.

Agreed, the only BBs which I'd say truly need EM are the Queen Elizabeth and the Yamato. On anything else I'd rather take AR, which is something I would say is an absolute must on almost every single ship.

Nice guideline, thank you!

Im currently rather at the start of my ship career and mostly stuck between battleships and cruisers. Im curious about the suggestion for the BBs. While i kind of understand the profits of Super Intendant and the two obvious others, i struggle to comprehend why its a common advice to get Concealment Expert on them.

Isnt a battleship visible or spotted most of the time per definition and attributes, given that one is not a very passive player or using an asset which demands a "safer" approach? Watching many streams and videos another conclusion is also that its overall counterproductive and mostly pointless for BBs to stay far away and out of the main battle zones.

Myself being a rather aggressive player in shooters in general i also tend to find myself directly at the frontlines or even overextended.

Do those suggestions actually make more sense or gain importance for ships on and above tiers 5 or 6?

My question is pretty much, why are those 4 skill points considered chosen wisely given all those aspects when there are other options which rather improve the strenghths of an asset?

That's exactly the reason why CE is good for BBs. Because you can get closer without being spotted, giving you the chance to surprise an enemy ship with a hard hit.

And you can disengange easier after tanking a lot so you can heal up and tank again later.

Yes, the game will get more complex in higher tiers and concealment becomes very important.

Furst , you probably read or watched this already, but if you are going to play BB very aggressive then consider German line and a specialised "secondary armaments build" - they have the best secondaries.

As we why CE for BB, well while i agree with your comments there is also the issue of getting the best out of your "Repair Party" consumables. If you can "vanish" while you heal back your health you can (especially with UK ships), almost live twice !

Also paradoxically, CE can be useful with an aggressive approach too, allowing you to get in closer before opening up with your first devastating salvo.

As you can see Adrenaline Rush and Concealment expert are considered usefull skills no matter what you play.

Other than those skills depent on the ship you are using. Like a cruiser with 155mm and below Armament for example (IFHE)

But i agree with most what was said above.

I can also recommend Situational Awareness for cruisers. (rather cheap prize for showing you how many enemys want to see you dead)

You can argue that this skill can be accounted for with skill, but it still sometimes warns you about the boarder hugging BB in the distance changing his target to you rather than the BB in front of him which can yield a nasty surprise given RNG dispersion.

Oh? Giving up already? But you haven't seen the best part yet. (Emerald) :Smile_trollface:

This is what I run on all IJN BBs (well, at least Kongo+)

sDd24BX.jpg

Order:

1 pt - Prev. Maint. (or Priority Target if you like it that much)

3 pts - Any of those 3 - whichever you prefer (I go Exp. Marksm. 1st)

6 pts - Superintendent

10 pts - Concealment

14 pts - Fire Prevention

17 pts - Basics of Survivability (or Vigilance if you prefer that)

19 pts - Exp. Marksm. if you didn't take it @3 or if you took it then whichever of the other 2 you prefer

You could install the Help Me! mod from Aslain's mod pack. You trigger it with the "H" button, and select your ship, it gives general captain skills for each ship + what flags are beneficial for a certain class. Not 100% failproof, but it is a good indicator to move from.

For DDs: My first 14 points are PM, LS, Vig or TRB (depending on if the DD turns on a dime, some are more sluggish), RL. Some Japanese and USSR also basically require EM. RL is a contentious skill but in my mind there's no doubt as to its usefulness for DDs. It's useful in practically every match where you have to deal with enemy DDs. BBs can use it too, especially the ones with atrocious turret traverse like some early Brits, and the more static bowtanking BBs like Nelson.

Everyone sings the praises of CE for BBs but in small low-tier maps with often 2x CVs, it's very dubious. It is much more helpful late into high-tier matches when the DDs are gone and there's often no CV at all. These also tend to be more open or at least have open expanses with no cover for CLs to use after seeing a BB at 12km.

I'd take priority target on every cruiser and BB.

Basic 10 point DD build

1. Prev. Maintenance

2. Last Stand

3. Survivability Expert

4. Concealment Expert

I usually follow this with Radio Location

Then you could pick torpedo armament expertise or demolition expert and adrenaline rush.

Priority target is good on any ship and it is one of my must picks on cruisers and battleships.
