Welcome to my little camouflage workshop :)

Status:

Blue Lagoon Camouflage added. Everything working as intended in game version 0.8.1.1.

Next, I want to tweak the existing Sci-Fi and Revolutionary camouflages, as I'm not entirely happy with them anymore.

I want it all, and I want it now!

Here you go:

Download all camouflages compiled into one package

What's this?

I make replacement textures for camouflages that I find to be immersion-breaking or uninteresting. I like my ships to look believable, but not necessarily historically accurate. If you feel the same, I hope you will find something of interest here.

Sounds nice and all, but I'm already in a long-term relationship with another mod...

My camouflages use the preexisting colours in the camouflages. The drawback of this is not being able to choose colours freely, but it brings with it the huge advantage of not needing a modified camouflages.xml file. That means that my mod should be compatible with other camouflage mods that do have their own XML file*. In fact, my mod is not intended to compete with other mods, but to complement them.

*I personally use them together with Wawan25's Unique Camouflages, which works just fine. I have not tested them with other mods, but they should get along with each other as well.

How to install?

Either choose the individual camouflages that interest you from the table of contents below, or get all my camouflages compiled into one package. Open the downloaded Zip file and copy the folder content (and, in the case of some camouflages, also the folder gui) that you will find inside. Open the folder res_mods inside the World of Warships folder on your computer. Locate the most recent folder inside res_mods, named after the current World of Warships version number, and paste the folder content (and gui, if applicable) into it.

Regular updates should not break the mods, but you will need to reinstall them in the appropriate res_mods/$VersionNumber folder. If you are unsure, revisit this thread after a game update, check the status at the top of this post and download the mods again.

So where do I get the mod?

The table of contents below contains all my camouflages. Click on the links to jump to the corresponding post if you want to read more about it, or click the download link to get the file.

With the Sci-Fi Camouflage being handed out for the Halloween missions, it can now be encountered more frequently. Sadly, the design is a bit of an immersion breaker. So I decided to make a replacement texture that looks a bit less out of place on a warship. Since this mod doesn't change the camouflages.xml, it is compatible with other mods such as Wawan25's Unique Camouflages.

So, I was a bit underwhelmed by the 2nd Anniversary permanent camouflages that we could get by completing the collection some time ago. I decided to try my hand at creating new textures for them, learnt a lot about modding in the process, and now finally they are ready for release.

The colours of the camouflages are still the same, which means that the camouflage.xml is not changed and this mod is compatible with other camouflage mods that come with their own XML file. All ships get their own two-tone blue camouflage pattern, and additional artwork to motivate your sailors :cap_rambo:. This all is not historically accurate, of course, but it is inspired by historic propaganda posters.

You got a bunch of Frosty Fir Tree camouflages during the new year events, but you don't like the look of it? Then this mod is for you:

Well, butt-ugliness, as well as beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. Some of those Wargaming camos are just a different style, and it isn't really my style. As other players have made mods to change what they don't like about the game, I thought I could try the same. And if I can give back a little to the community as well, all the better.

Much like the real world events of 1917 which gave the ship her name, the Oktyabrskaya Revolutsiya "Red October" camouflage has sparked controversy and is considered by some to have been a bit over the top. I have also seen it compared to a McDonald's Happy Meal (the camo, not the historical event, even though one could argue that the historical event has had an equally profound impact on many people's lives as the American corporation flooding the planet with food of questionable value).

But OP, you say, if I don't like it, I can just use the other permanent camouflage. Which is correct, but then you still have to look at other players in game who use the camouflage.

Therefore I present: A replacement texture for the Red October camouflage. The ship gets a (fictional) brownish colour scheme which could have been used in the (historic) later stages of World War II, when she was mainly used near the coast to support land-based operations. Additionally, she has (fictional) artwork of the (historic) Order of the Red Banner which she was awarded in 1944. Also, her crew has decorated her with a (fictional, but historically-inspired) slogan celebrating the 27th anniversary of the October revolution. The turrets and the aft tower stay red because I'd have to make changes to the XML file to change that for aerial identification.

With version 7.1, we got a new camouflage that actually would work quite well as a high-visibility scheme. While that is fine for coast guard boats, it may lead to undesirable results on a warship...

This mod changes the "Vive la France" camo to a dazzle camouflage applied over the original coat of paint, without repainting completely. Part of the ship will still be in the standard grey. I quite like the contrast between the freshly painted camouflage and the dirty and weathered grey parts.

The new Chinese New Year designs don't look that bad, I actually sort of like them - but not as camouflages. As camouflages, they look about as unconvincing as it gets.

Due to the huge benefits that these camouflages offer, they will probably mostly be used on high tier ships. Since their main source are clan battles, they will also be mostly used by good players. So I redesigned them as modern, no-nonsense, serious business, "here comes a player who's gonna make this game count" splinter camouflages.

The colour palette for the International Women's Day camouflage consist of greens, white and red, so this seems like a good opportunity to create a Mountbatten pink camouflage. To keep it from becoming too boring, I mixed some patches of ochre in. Use on Royal Navy ships for extra historical accuracy :cap_tea:

As replacement for the Pi Day Camouflage, I used the transparency in the colour palette and made a low-key splotch camo, applied only to parts of the otherwise virtually unchanged ship. It's the kind of camouflage you might use if you don't have the time or the amount of paint necessary for painting the whole ship.

Just a quick thing I had been working on in between: The New Year Camouflage is one of the oldest bonus consumable camouflages in the game, and you can still get it every now and then. This mod replaces it with a kind of strawberry-flavoured chocolate chip pattern with a dark green base.

Players who bought the Graf Zeppelin when it was released and took part in the subsequent testing, received the exclusive "Adler" camouflage. Now I know this camouflage has a lot of fans, however... it does look a little bit unrealistic. Seriously. I never thought I'd write a sentence like this, but: The Third Reich had a bit more understatement and was not quite as loudly letting you know what it thought of itself.

In reality, the ship never was finished, so to create the camouflage, I had to make up a fictional service history: The Germans received advice on carriers from the Japanese, so they painted the Graf Zeppelin with a merchant ship silhouette, similar to Japanese carrier camouflages. During the war, the ship was constantly on the move, trying to provide air cover and support naval operations. As she was the only carrier in the German fleet, she could not be spared for repairs for any length of time. That's why she started to look rather worn down as the war dragged on, with dirt streaks everywhere and the paint fading and revealing the red primer.

I thought the Twitch camouflage was going to stay relatively rare and I wouldn't need to bother with it. But somehow it keeps showing up in my games, being all purple and stuff - so here's a replacement. As a nod to the original camouflage, the black and white triangles have a very slight purple tint.

This mod changes the "Fleur d’Acier" camouflage for Dunkerque to something more realistic. The additional silver elements, most notably the Fleur de Lis on turret number two, are removed, and the paintjob is changed to standard battleship grey. I wanted the ship to look like a scarred veteran, so I gave it a very weathered look with dirt everywhere, rusty spots and fading paint.

For you, this is still just a permanent camouflage, but technically this has been a remodel and reskin. In that way, it was also a research and development project for me. I had to figure out the workflow and the best techniques for reskinning. Also, I managed to find a way to edit the 3D files. With the experience gained, I hope to be able to make similar mods for the "Maid of Orleans" camouflage for Richelieu soon.

The Halloween 2015 camouflage is a bit of a can of worms. On the one hand, the bright and un-nautical colours make it an obvious choice for a mod. On the other hand, the texture is not only used for the Halloween camouflage, but also a number of other camouflages, and also for some gun turrets in premium camouflages. Changing the Halloween texture changes all these other camouflages as well.

However, I decided to do it anyway: The Ranked Camouflage gets a bit more boring, but still looks decent. The Basketball Camouflages (Japanese Slam Dunk, American Alley-Oop, German Layup, Russian Nothing But Net), which rise to astonishing levels of garishness with this mod, were a one-time thing back in 2016 and have not been handed out again, so they should be extremely rare in the game. The FTW camouflage is still in use, but very hard to get and consequently very rare as well (at least on the EU server). The changed appearance of the turrets in the premium camouflages is unfortunate, but at least the colours are okay. Check out the second picture so you know what you're going to get. (Sadly I wasn't yet able to get a before/after-picture of the Kiev premium camouflage.)

The Azure Lane Siren Camouflage is another pattern with a rather challenging colour palette. The only somewhat convincing colours that are possible with this is black and dark browns. So I turned this into a camouflage to hide your ship while it is moored near islands during autumn and winter, something that Tirpitz might have worn if she hadn't been stationed in northern Norway, but in the Baltic Sea instead.

Recently, we had a mission to get Tier II premium Tachibana Lima for free, which is nice, because now you don't need a special captain for sealclubbing welcoming new players to the game, but can instead just drop your high tier 19-pointer in there. Also, the ship is a lot of fun to play and farms detonation flags like nobody's business.

This mod changes the camouflage to the classic Japanese destroyer look of the interwar period, with some artistic license. The superstructure is a little lighter than the rest of the ship (for extra elegance), and on the first smokestack is the mon (family crest) of the ancient Tachibana clan. “Tachibana” actually is the name of a citrus species native to Japan and has been the inspiration for the mon design. The camouflage comes with a modified ship icon for the port.

The Halloween 2016 Camouflage is changed in the same way as the Halloween 2015 Camouflage. The texture is also used by the World of Warships Anniversary Camouflage and the Restless Fire Camouflage, so these change as well. The Anniversary camouflage becomes a quite nice dark blue with very subtle decorative lines. Restless Fire actually looks like somebody painted over the original Restless Fire with grey paint.

No camouflage is modded as often as Ocean Soul, it seems, and for good reasons. So here is my version. It keeps some of the original's character but changes it into a pattern that is closer to what was used as camouflage in reality. I actually does a pretty good job of visually breaking up the structure of the ship.

The Sharks and the Eagles Camouflage share one texture, so they both get changed to a grey splinter scheme with a little bit extra. Warm grey for the eagles and cool gray for the sharks.

One day, the admiral comes into the office: "My son, who is really smart, asked me yesterday: Daddy, why don't you paint waves on the ships so they will become invisible?" - "Um, Sir, that is certainly a creative idea, but..." - "But?" - "...it's not really compliant with the camouflage guidelines, and..." - "Well then put it into the guidelines." - "Pardon, Sir?" - "That's an order!"

(It doesn't look as bad as it sounds, honestly)

Say I want my Yamato permanent camo to display shark camo,how does one do that? (Nice collection btw)

Thank you!

You would need to mod the camouflages.xml, the file that determines which texture and colour scheme is used for which camouflage.

1. Get the WoWS Unpacker from here

2. Unpack the camouflages.xml. You will find the file in a folder called res_unpack. Move it to the folder in res_mods/ that has the current version number. Open it with a text editor.

3. Now you can start modding: First, you need to find the relevant section for the sharks camo on the Yamato. To do so, you first need to know which ship group Yamato belongs to:

Quote

        <shipGroup>
            <name>IJN_group_1</name>
            <ships> PJSD002_Umikaze_1925 PJSD001_Tachibana_1912 PJSD014_Tachibana_1912_Asus PJSD024_Wakatake_1923 PJSD003_Isokaze_1917 PJSD004_Minekadze_1920 PJSD105_Mutsuki PJSD017_Kamikaze_1930 PJSD025_True_Kamikaze PJSD026_Camo_Kamikaze PJSD206_Hatsuharu PJSD106_Fubuki PJSD706_Shinonome PJSD108_Akizuki PJSD208_Kagero PJSD708_HSF_Harekaze PJSD012_Shimakaze_1943 PJSB011_Mikasa_1905 PJSB001_Kawachi_1912 PJSB008_Ishizuchi_1921 PJSB007_Kongo_1942 PJSB010_Nagato_1944 PJSB013_Amagi_1942 PJSB021_Izumo_1938 PJSB018_Yamato_1944 PJSC037_Hashidate_1940 PJSC503_Katori PJSC013_Kuma_1938 PJSC004_Yubari_1944 PJSC005_Furutaka_1926 PJSC007_Aoba_1943 PJSC008_Myoko_1945 PJSC009_Mogami_1935 PJSC038_Atago_1944 PJSC012_Ibuki_1944 PJSC034_Zao_1944 PJSA002_Hosho_1939 PJSA009_Ryujo_1933 PJSA011_Hiryu_1942 PJSA017_Hakuryu_1942 PJSD219_Kitakaze</ships>
        </shipGroup>

4. So, IJN_group_1 it is. Next, you need to find the entry for the Shark camouflage for this ship group:

Quote

    <camouflage>
        <annotation>Sharks vs Eagles tile camouflage block for the ships with a texture 2048*2048, 4096*4096, 4096*4096+2048*2048</annotation>
        <name>Sharks_tile</name>
        <tiled>true</tiled>
        <UV>
            <Tile>2.0 2.0</Tile>
            <Bow_DeckHouse>1 1</Bow_DeckHouse>
            <MidFront_DeckHouse>1 1</MidFront_DeckHouse>
            <MidBack_DeckHouse>1 1</MidBack_DeckHouse>
            <Stern_DeckHouse>1 1</Stern_DeckHouse>
            <Gun>0.6 0.6</Gun>
            <Bulge>1 1</Bulge>
        </UV>
        <Textures>
            <Tile>content/gameplay/common/camouflage/textures/Ship_dazzle_tile_camo_Sharks_vs_Eagles_39.dds</Tile>
        </Textures>
        <colorSchemes>colorScheme_Sharks_vs_Eagles_01</colorSchemes>
    </camouflage>
    <camouflage>
        <annotation>Sharks vs Eagles tile camouflage block for the ships with a texture 4096*2048</annotation>
        <name>Sharks_tile</name>
        <shipGroups>IJN_group_2 USN_group_2 RUS_group_2 UK_group_2 GER_group_2 FRA_group_2 POL_group_1 PAN_group_2</shipGroups>
        <tiled>true</tiled>
        <UV>
            <Tile>2.0 1</Tile>
            <Bow_DeckHouse>1 0.75</Bow_DeckHouse>
            <MidFront_DeckHouse>1 0.75</MidFront_DeckHouse>
            <MidBack_DeckHouse>1 0.75</MidBack_DeckHouse>
            <Stern_DeckHouse>1 0.75</Stern_DeckHouse>
            <Gun>0.5 0.5</Gun>
            <Bulge>1 1</Bulge>
        </UV>
        <Textures>
            <Tile>content/gameplay/common/camouflage/textures/Ship_dazzle_tile_camo_Sharks_vs_Eagles_39.dds</Tile>
        </Textures>
        <colorSchemes>colorScheme_Sharks_vs_Eagles_01</colorSchemes>
    </camouflage>

...

As you can see, there are several entries for different ship groups (I omitted a few more), but none of these are for IJN_group_1. So the entry you're looking for is the first. As an example, if Yamato was in IJN_group_2, you'd have to take the second entry, as that entry is linked to that ship group.

5. Copy the lines with the textures and the colour scheme.

Quote

     <tiled>true</tiled>
        <UV>
            <Tile>2.0 2.0</Tile>
            <Bow_DeckHouse>1 1</Bow_DeckHouse>
            <MidFront_DeckHouse>1 1</MidFront_DeckHouse>
            <MidBack_DeckHouse>1 1</MidBack_DeckHouse>
            <Stern_DeckHouse>1 1</Stern_DeckHouse>
            <Gun>0.6 0.6</Gun>
            <Bulge>1 1</Bulge>
        </UV>
        <Textures>
            <Tile>content/gameplay/common/camouflage/textures/Ship_dazzle_tile_camo_Sharks_vs_Eagles_39.dds</Tile>
        </Textures>
        <colorSchemes>colorScheme_Sharks_vs_Eagles_01</colorSchemes>

6. Find the entry for the Yamato permanent camouflage:

Quote

 <camouflage>
        <annotation>Yamato unique permOflage block</annotation>
        <name>camo_permanent_1</name>
        <targetShip>PJSB018_Yamato_1944</targetShip>
        <tiled>false</tiled>
        <UV>
            <Tile>1 1</Tile>
            <Gun>0.35 0.35</Gun>
        </UV>
        <Textures>
            <Bow_Hull>content/gameplay/common/camouflage/textures/JSB018_Yamato_1944_Hull_camo_01.dds</Bow_Hull>
            <MidFront_Hull>content/gameplay/common/camouflage/textures/JSB018_Yamato_1944_Hull_camo_01.dds</MidFront_Hull>
            <MidFront_DeckHouse>content/gameplay/common/camouflage/textures/JSB018_Yamato_1944_Deckhouse_camo_01.dds</MidFront_DeckHouse>
            <MidBack_Hull>content/gameplay/common/camouflage/textures/JSB018_Yamato_1944_Hull_camo_01.dds</MidBack_Hull>
            <MidBack_DeckHouse>content/gameplay/common/camouflage/textures/JSB018_Yamato_1944_Deckhouse_camo_01.dds</MidBack_DeckHouse>
            <Stern_Hull>content/gameplay/common/camouflage/textures/JSB018_Yamato_1944_Hull_camo_01.dds</Stern_Hull>
            <Gun>content/gameplay/common/camouflage/textures/IJN_tile_camo_01.dds</Gun>
        </Textures>
        <colorSchemes>colorSchemeIJNP26</colorSchemes>
        <colorSchemes>colorSchemeIJNP37</colorSchemes>
    </camouflage>

7. Paste over the lines for the textures and the colour scheme:

Quote

<camouflage>
        <annotation>Yamato unique permOflage block</annotation>
        <name>camo_permanent_1</name>
        <targetShip>PJSB018_Yamato_1944</targetShip>
        <tiled>true</tiled>
        <UV>
            <Tile>2.0 2.0</Tile>
            <Bow_DeckHouse>1 1</Bow_DeckHouse>
            <MidFront_DeckHouse>1 1</MidFront_DeckHouse>
            <MidBack_DeckHouse>1 1</MidBack_DeckHouse>
            <Stern_DeckHouse>1 1</Stern_DeckHouse>
            <Gun>0.6 0.6</Gun>
            <Bulge>1 1</Bulge>
        </UV>
        <Textures>
            <Tile>content/gameplay/common/camouflage/textures/Ship_dazzle_tile_camo_Sharks_vs_Eagles_39.dds</Tile>
        </Textures>
        <colorSchemes>colorScheme_Sharks_vs_Eagles_01</colorSchemes>

    </camouflage>

8. Save the file and start the game to test it.

Keep in mind that you have to repeat this whenever the in-game camouflages.xml is updated, i.e. after every game update.
