While serving in the ROYAL NAVY. When we sailed the JACK and ENSIGN STAFFS were dropped down. The tripods were deck clenched and the wooden staffs were secured to either below decks or to nearest bulkhead. This was done prior to doing gun drills or going to action stations. They were put up on entering Harbour. Your staffs are still up. 

Closing near to an island the ships do vear away, could it be possible to do it with ships closing on each other.A Navigators job. To stop collisions while engaging fire.
