In the same game I finished off Shiratsuyu. She supposed to be a gunboat, what a surprise that I beat her in tier VI American DD.

Only a good shot to a broadside stationary bot, really short range too... but the result surprised me.

Even more because until then I had only overpens.

My last game of Ibuki grind, Zao here I come! (when I eventually buy her). After getting rid of Sherman I was quite comfortable in delaying red advance on my own kiting away. Few salvos and going dark, rinse and repeat. Not the most exiting tactic, but in these circumstances effective. The whole grind was quite painful, although I do like Ibuki - it's just saturation with super ships does no favours to tier IX, it's not comfortable tier to play anymore, particularly for cruisers...

Carrying in Defence of Newport. Almost stopped the enemy entering the base but one DD made just before I could reload, so only 3/5 stars.

Still, I did get kinda lucky by detonating 3 other destroyers. :fish_boom:

Would you mind sharing your build? Is it only concealment for rudder, do you take Heavy SAP shells for your cap as well? 

I have little success in her so far in standard build (tbh did not play her that much), I would like to try something different.

Spotter plane ofc. You might be tempted to build into it (coal module + Eye in the Sky), but imho it's a waste of resources: if you really need it, it means you're not using TGG.

It would make sense to mount the flags for healing, speed (though I'm often quite stationary...), smoke duration and consumable cooldown, but personally I don't bother with any of them.

The playstyle is more strategic than tactical: one needs to be very disciplined with one's turns, pushes (only go 1v1 with an hp advantage and/or a smoke) and salvoes while smoked up (the penalty is 9.9 km, so it will completely ruin one's turn if there's a DD/sub in the way).

 

I generally sail middle in the opening, draw some fire and dodge, turn away (possibly behind an island, otherwise I use a smoke), then slowly kite. It's important to stay somewhere where there's an open field of fire (only low islands), lots of targets and no isolated DD/sub to keep you spotted but unproductive. For instance, on Islands of Ice and North/Northern Lights I prefer the Western side.

 

The other thing is: sometimes you have to play her as a CL, meaning you'll use someone's smoke or an island (from a distance, given your flat ballistics) to farm for free. It's easier than it sounds, as with your base concealment (17.6) being worse than your firing range (17.1) you won't get screwed by the gun bloom.

 

As for a general advice, you have to know which BBs have upper belts you can pen with SAP: IJN and British yes, Soviet and German no, for instance. Shoot the superstructure or load AP against the latter.

I reported a griefer today. Hung at the back of the map in his Yueyang all match, and actually announced he was going to do that at the start of the battle. I have never took the time or energy to do somehing with these folks, just couldn't be bothered. But from this moment on, im actively creating tickets for this. It's getting out of hand...

I had a go today, few battles, still have to practice but works better than standard build for me - SAP slaps very hard, and with relatively flat trajectory it is not a problem to hit red ships even at 16-19km. 

But this type of play require a lot of attention and good positioning, oh boy how red BBs want to score a hit! :Smile_teethhappy:

Yes, I can recall at least two cases where one bad decision got me killed and threw the game, early or late. With no concealment to disengage one can't just go on autopilot: full awareness is needed at all times. In particular:

  1. as long as there might be a DD/sub in the way, it's better to only shoot through the smoke after at least half the turn is done (when you're broadside). An enemy that's not paying attention will still need a few seconds to aim, then there's the shell travel time, and by then you should be angled.
  2. it's easy to get lulled into a false sense of security when the damage passes 100k, 150k, etc. This build inevitably leads to a higher proportion of salvoes being fired against BBs and large cruisers, if anything because they keep themselves spotted by shooting at the lighthouse, so that damage is less valuable than usual.
