I'm not sure, it's a tough one. As a BB player myself, it would be great to have a cruiser escort me as like previously stated they're great against the destroyer and cruiser threat as well as air. I believe if done correctly the combination between a cruiser and a BB could be devastating as you have stated. The problem comes when smart play is ignored and you find yourself as a cruiser outnumbered by BB's. They're obviously going to go for you first. I reckon if smartly played this tactic could work well and if the BB appears to be leading you to certain death then you have plenty of speed and manoeuvrability to get out of there.

Hrm.

My two cents - BB players like to hang back (alot) and dink at each other - that means you as a cruiser player can either hang with them (yay) or try and work in closer.

If you close, you are a softer target AND easier to hit. If you hang back, and your BBs screw it up, you get munched.

I don't mind being the sacrificial goat in my CA, but too often your BBs will decide 'nah, I'm gonna chill here' leaving you all alone

The solution would be quite simple I think, if (as a cruiser) you find a BB skipper who might close the gap down to 11-13km distance before starting to duke it out in old fashion duelling style, I would happily tag along as my range in Pensacola is atleast 15km so that leaves me the possibility of supporting him on his target or switch to the daring DD or interfering CA next to supporting the BB with my AA and Anti-Torp Skill.

If ofcourse they stay at 18+km - no way I am heading in the middle, would be just too tempting a target for the enemy BBs like "nom nom - one shot xp coming for a snack"

Yeah totally true but BB players ( myself included) should realise you're huge and have long range guns.

But you're a sitting duck for TB's ( Torpedo Bombers) and DB's ( Dive Bombers) and not to mention you're a huge xp peniata

I am progressing down the Japanese cruiser line and even though these ships aren't the most suited for escorting battleships, I try to do it almost every battle. At start of each battle I am looking for a BB that goes to a good position (not 9-10 line) and acts reasonably.  However.. sometimes BB players just don't want to push and they are just play the RNG game at 15+km. I don't mind taking one for the team, but with my paper japanese cruiser, I can't tank the damage from battleships and so approximately 50% of matches are a disaster where I don't do much. But when you find a BB that is willing to press the advantage, games can be just amazing (my highest dmg/exp game was in Aoba escorting friendly Nagato)

However, my question is regarding the Japanese cruisers. iChase mentioned in his latest video that Japanese cruisers aren't suited for escorting and should go to the middle of the map. What do you think about this? I feel like if I go there, I die very quickly either from DDs or random BB that decided that yolo through the middle is the bestest way. I feel like use of the torpedoes from these cruisers is very limited.

Hmm personnally I would say keep moving and stay close to the island and don't stop.

You have long range torpedoes I would if you see a BB YOLO make him panic give him a broadside and switch to another position and give a second broadside and you get a huge damage roll. Because evasion isn't something that a BB is great in.

Shooting down planes gives too little XP to make escorting rewarding.

well see, thats one point that could be tweaked.

Fact is, with their lower range many CAs will forgive a lot of shooting solutions if they stay close to their BBs in a long range engagement, and shooting down planes does not make up for it. In my opinion it shouldn't be equally rewarded, but it should be worthwhile. The game simply needs to reward proper fleet play more.

> more xp/creds for shooting down planes!

Maybe even situational differentiation as in (just a list, pick what you like):

  • Extra xp/creds for d/t-bombers which have not dropped their payload yet < i'd like to see that one especially
  • (small) Assist bonus for also shooting at a plane that someone else shot down
  • Bonus for killing DDs/CA or any ship while being close to a(nother capital) ship (like the teamwork batch in Warthunder)

Precisely my experience when playing in my Cleveland. Usually BBs pick one side of the map and then zone each other at max range and fire away doing mostly nothing.  And then there is me twiddling my thumbs and hoping someone brakes the zone of fire so i can have something to shoot at while i wait for that next air raid so i can feel useful .  Al tho decapping is usually fun even when its  mostly suicidal.

Yeah pretty much this with my Cleveland too.

I'm about to give up on escorting ships as it just isn't paying off. Usually the capital ships just seem to sail off in whatever direction fancies them so best I can do is camp with the CVs and see almost no action until it’s too late or go off with one or two of the BBs. The BBs then start firing away at max range while the enemy BBs always seem to want to shoot the escorting cruisers first. I just get hammered without being able to shoot back. If I maneuver then I’m out of AA range to help the BBs.

The only way escorting seems like it might pay off as Cruiser is in part of a detachment where you can coordinate your actions. In randoms, forget it! I’m just going to go back to DD hunting.
