Radar at Tier V?

Hi,

I just played as a DD at T5 and was surprised to find myself spotted in smoke (and shortly thereafter sunk) by radar. I'm used to it playing at 8/9/10 and make a mental note of the ships to stay clear of. I could not see any ships in the opposite team that I thought could have radar. I asked the other team who had radar, but with no response. I took a screenshot of the players to double-check after and the wiki confirms none of them should? Has anything changed recently in this regard?

Indianapolis in tier 7, if there was one.. maybe Belfast too? Or maybe you were hydroed?

edit: maybe Flint too or Atlanta..? Plenty of radars in tier 7...

Indianapolis, Atlanta and Belfast at tier VII have radar and can see tier V ships.

But it sounds more like you got spotted by hydroacoustic search which every cruiser in your MM range gets.

Pretty sure it was a T6 German destroyer now. Can't believe I have never come across that before?

Yeah, that one gets hydro with top hull and yes the "detected" icon is the same as radar. It's a nasty trick for the unprepared, quite a strong DD overall mostly because of this.

WG really ought to differentiate the detection icons, so that the player knows if its radar or hydro that is illuminating him (albeit its usually easy to deduce with a bit of situational awareness).

If WG needed a vaguely historical justification, then it would be that - in real life - radar and hydro work in different environments (atmosphere and water), and are thus transmitted and detected by completely different systems.

Does hydro sound anything in the detected ship, in real life? In a quiet submarine - would you hear a destroyer hydroing you?

Well, "hydroacoustic search" is a pretty ambiguous term anyway. Is it meant to be active or passive? If passive, the detected ship should have no idea. Then again, magically knowing when someone can see you also doesn't make sense. So I guess don't think about it too hard.

In gameplay terms, it would kind of make sense to have different icons. I mean, you have different icons for planes and ships spotting you.

Depends. Active sonar (like 2WW ASDIC) is 'pinging' you, so you know it right away with ur ears - that is if ur in submerged submarine. Passive sonar (working on hydroacustics, that is sound generated mostly by prepellors of the ship) you cant be aware by any means, thats why it is called passive - with hydro you only listen without doing anything else. Radar - depends if you have propper equipment on board (that is a piece of eletronics that detects incoming radar waves; germans invented first of the kind i think during 2WW for their u-boots to prevent surprise air attacks by wild planes with radars)

Regards

I really do think they should add 2 different symbols for when you are spotted by hydro or radar. Could help clarify a lot of cause a lot less confusion.

I agree. The icons are bad as it is (I have to use mod just to make them more "visible") and having same icon for both only increases confusion. Unless its a part of the intended game play. Then I am too limited to understand it.

Flint does not have radar. There has ben a lot of confusion going on during the last ranked season and I'd really like to see people get such simple things straight.

Didn't we had two different symbols in the past?

I'm pretty sure we never did. In fact, having a special symbol for either of these is a relatively recent addition (previously you just knew you are spotted).

Odd, i was sure we had one for each, iirc there was an ussue with them overlapping or something. Might be wrong tho.

I think that issue was Incoming Fire Alert overlapping everything else (Priority Target, radar / hydro spotting symbol, plane spotting symbol).

Tier 5? I hardly ever get a pure Tier 5 match in my Fujin. I'm always with Belfasts, Atlantas and always expect radar etc

It has been happening more so of late for sure. I will see if I can monitor it and take some snapshots over 10 games to see if I'm imagining it.

Still happening.  Driving Clemson T4, got painted by RADAR not Hydro, and got sunk

Do you perhaps have a replay, or some info of what radared you?
