Hypothetical Norwegian Premium DD

Hi guys, so there's often a lot of talk about ships people want to bring into the game, usually from their own country and I wanted to join the fun. Me being from Norway does limit the options quite a bit and I don't for a second believe we will ever get a Norwegian ship in the game (but one can dream, right?).

My proposal:
Sleipner-class destroyer
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleipner-class_destroyer

 300px-HNoMS_Sleipner_%28H48%29.jpg
Displacement: 735 tons [1]
Length: 74.30 m (243.77 ft)
Beam: 7.80 m (25.59 ft)
Draught: 4.15 m (13.62 ft)
Propulsion: 12,500 shp (9,300 kW) De Laval oil fuelled steam turbines
Speed: 32 knots (59.26 km/h)
Complement: 75
Armament:
  • 3 × 10 cm guns
  • 1 × 40 mm Bofors anti-aircraft gun
  • 2 × 12.7 mm Colt anti-aircraft machine guns
  • 2 × 53.3 cm torpedo tubes
  • 4 × depth charge throwers

The main issue I see with this ship is the size and the armament.

The size is a bit small in comparison to most other DDs with a length of 75m. However it isn't a massive stretch to DDs like Wakatake or V-25 that both sit at around 85m or Smith at 89m. Displacement is also low at 735 tons compared to 900 ish for Wakatake and V25. The Smith does say 700 tons on "normal" load and 900 on "full" load but I've no idea what this means, I'm assuming the one value actually given is "full" load for Sleipner but I might be wrong.

Armament also seems a bit lackluster with 3x 100mm guns and only 2x torpedo tubes (However, one of the ships in the class did have two extra for a total of four). I can't really see it as a torpboat with only 2-4 torps unless it had an amazing reload and I'm not really sure about the guns.

Anyone have anything interesting to add like proposed tier for the class and what in-game stats she would have?

That's really quite small, slow and underarmed...

She looks more like a sort of escort DD more than an actual DD. Even at tier 2 the firepower is iffy.

The way I see it, the only reason she can't be a tier1 patrol boat type ship is the two torpedoes. So she's in that awkward place where she would be weak at tier2, but torpedoes prevent her from being at tier1.

That is to say unless the guns are actually fantastic bundles of fast firing joy, in which case she might work at tier2.

My thoughts exactly, but not much too else to choose from sadly. The only saving grace would be as you said if it had a snappy reload.

With the low displacement it would also be rather squishy if I'm not mistaken in that WG uses that for HP pool

That is unfortunate indeed, it would be lovely to have some Fenno-Scandinavian ships.

They always have grand names and a certain...panache

Maybe as a tier 2 with snappy reload and good torpedo angles and damage, as it's 533mm torpedoes after all. She might not be the best around, but it could be passable in terms of performance.

I thought about that the small displacement might make her hard enough to hit even with decent aiming, but this works well rather with flush-deck designs, as with V-25. The first thought of mine was also that "this is a textbook T1 destroyer".

But hey, following the recent trend, maybe WG can give her some "flavour", like being able to attack surface targets with the depth charges or such.

Otherway, the ship seems rather nice-looking.

Sweden would probably be a safer bet with the Tre Kronor-class cruisers (pretty sure I remembered the name correctly)

Yeah, their bigger ships where RN Town and C class.

I'd love to see Draug class with names like Draug (ghost) and Troll but they where smaller than the Sleipnir class :(

Yeah, their bigger ships where RN Town and C class.

I did consider mentioning them since Lo Yang is in the game and is just a Benson in disguise but I felt this would be more interesting to look at. However for actual additions to the game the those would be more viable :yes_cap:

Still, I think Norway have to wait quite a bit before they get added to the game xD We weren't an iconic naval nation (in regards to warships) and there aren't enough Norwegians playing the game to convince WG to pump out some viking vessels.

I remember a thread about a few of those designs.

If anything, the current low tier French cruisers brilliantly demonstrate that a few of those designs are perfectly viable for the game.

And the Pan-Asia / Commonwealth tree shows that Lesta studios is perfectly alright having multiple nations crammed into one tree, so it's looking good for all those ships.

The one issue with it would be for the Swedes to accept a Danish captain being in a Swedish ship and vice versa :teethhappy:

Like Exorcet said, you guys had some cracking names for your ships.

It would be pretty sweet to have a Scandinavian tree, just a shame it would be pretty much last in line after spaghetti ships, baguette ships, tea ships, vodka ships etc. etc. :honoring:

Troll would be a pretty memeworthy name

My ancestors where norse, came over during the great pagan invasion that set up the old northern Danelaw, always had a soft spot for Scandinavian history and culture. Would happily grind a Scandinavian tree.

You can't have the Battle of the North Cape without HNoMS Stord. :child:

I mean, it isn't impossible. RN DDs will get added anyway and then it's basically just adding a reskin and maybe some flavour and releasing it as a premium. I know I would buy it, just for the hilarity of bad Norwegian captain voice-overs :P

Hi guys (...)

Ahoy!

My proposal:
Sleipner-class destroyer

If any of Slepiner-class ended up as a premium, I see only HNoMS Odin as a worthy candidate.

I think it is more probable to see one of S-Class destroyers somewhere between T7-8.

Yes you did :) Would be fun to see Sverige class armored ships too. Pansarskepp in Swedish. 4 fast firing 280mm guns(reload time 15sec) But all Scandinavian navies have had some pretty interesting ships :))

The Danes had: https://da.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niels_Juel_(artilleriskib)

Slow and small (and not built for long cruises in the pacific).... but has 10 150 mm fast firing guns, 55 mm deck plating, and up to 195 mm armour at the waterline.

I guess WG could make a Premium-tree for all the nations not representedn the game, and add all these single ships from nations that cannot hold an entire line?

I like it.

Give her stealth torping ability, and she could be viable even with 3 tubes. A ship that small should have very good concealment anyway.

As for other ships, yes please. Even if they're reskins of British DDs.

This ship falls into the category of Japanese Tomozurus, Italian Spicas, or French Melpomenes and similar ships. Even the RN had one class of these, the Kingfishers, even though those were more escort-oriented rather than torpedo boats.

I would put them in tier 2, but they look too modern (1930s) compared to the usual ships at those tiers.
