What's all the fuss about the decision what guns you should take on the FdG and GK again?

It has been prooven and explained many times, that the 420s aren't straight up better.

The only decision you have to take into consideration is, do you like ROF or the alpha strike?

Thats it. The difference in penetration is too small to make a difference at above 5km and below that the 406s even win.

And there isn't a single armor plate ingame, where the difference in overmatch capability would make a change.

I'm scoring far more citadels vs BBs with 420mm...

Whether that is because I am used to the Fat Freddy after X amount of games OR they're just better remains to be debated however.

Bigger the better imo, alpha is important at higher tiers when windows of opportunity are supposedly less, then again I look at all the T10 Yam and KurryWurst potatoes with their no risk perm camo...

Thats just confirmation bias.

Thats just confirmation bias.

Maybe but my FDG performance increases steadily and I'm already experienced at higher tier. If 406mm are your thing then go use them, be glad we have the choice...

Fat Freddy is a better ship than the Bismarck on every count, however she is a tier higher so you'd hope so.

Every inch a Bismarck on a bodybuilding program. Better guns, more HP and even better AA.

I find her gun accuracy well behaved, firing at roughly your reveal distance is accurate.

The 420mm once you understand them will serve you well. They pack a far better punch than the 380pm or 406mm ones. The values look incremental but the extra power helps vs other BB who are your main foe at the higher tiers anyway. Talk of the over pen vs cruisers is exaggerated, they are at risk of deletion every single time a BB aims at them.

I've kept my Bismarck but will have to see if I'll keep Fat Freddy or get Grosse KurryWurst.

Just curious...are the 420mm actually better than the 406? You loose out on the dpm by switching to the heavier shells and that seems like a bad trade for a bit stronger alpha strike...what did i miss?

/cheers

Forum seems divided on which guns to use but there is some agreement that they're so similar that there isn't really a wrong choice.

Use both and decide for yourself.

I personally roll with 420mm as I feel they do better damage vs top tier BB. Besides with Adrenaline Rush both guns can reload pretty fast after you've taken some damage. The 406mm can be buffed to Scharn speeds of reload times.

O.K. So I finaly got the Fridrich, used free XP and to fully equip him and tried both types of guns. At the end I chose those 420mm ones as they seem to have more punch. I still have only 14 point captain on her, but it is enough to cover the basics. However the ship itself is somewhat a disappointment. It is simply a bigger Bismarck with the same amount of guns, just with bigger calibre. I just hope I will feel a difference when (if) I get the GK.

The ship is doing exactly as intended, it is essentially a bigger Bismarck and was designed to be that if the real thing was ever finished.

I did this and now really regret it, does it get any better when upgraded? Guns feel even worse than the 380-s on bismarck, cant really say they work better againts armored targets( 406-s) and they feel even more inaccurate. Does not seem to have any armor( i think i have taken more citadels in it than i have in my 100 or so games in bis),armor feels much worse than the bismarck. and its slow and does not turn. Feel like selling it and buying either the bismarck or the gneisenau back, gameplay wise i really liked the gneisenau more than the bismarck, so i might go for that.

I've just unlocked Iowa and 1st salvo at a GK was a lovely citadel followed up by lots more accurate shots throughout the game. Can't help but feel ze German guns are a tad crappy. A following game in FDG was the normal rng affair and lower than expected damage returns, again.

But dat Iowa armour................. I knew there was a reason I loved getting one in my crosshair!

Words just can't describe my abject disappointment and disgust with FDG right now. Post battle rant? Maybe. Higher tier DD camfest meta? Maybe.

But I just cannot for the life of me make it work.

Yes I've watched the higher tier videos from all the normal contributors and whilst they are informative they are cherry picked dynamic battles.

The question is what do you do when there's 5 high tier DD's running rampant meaning you can't advance because your own are not as good.

What do you do when you take a cap supportive position and then become the HE spam target. If you disengage you end up at 20k where the guns can't hit squat. Even when they do I'm sick of getting 1350 overpens.

Maybe it's just the 4pm kiddy playpool time of day which utterly fecks up the team play.

But surely in my disgust and hopping into Kutozov, then causing 120k of burning battleships isn't right?

I've only had 4 games in Iowa and not particularly good as I'm still working up in her but the guns are tremendous in comparison.

And please don't mention get in close and brawl. I love that style but how do you get in close and brawl when your team are playing dress up and Barbie at the back? You just over extend and die.

So please excuse this as a hot headed rant but I'm really questioning if I want to continue to tier 10. The meta just sucks balls.

I'm really thinking tiers 6/7/8 are the best for getting stuck in.

Please help me to continue this ship before I leave it to rust in port.

I don't want to hear about your amaze balls 200k games. I want to hear how you cope with a shite team or just the high tier DD meta and how to get the best from this ship in non ideal circumstances.

Rant over. I'll be far more rational and cool headed after a beer or 7.

P.S

I'm not a Battleship whore. I play all classes and enjoy when in the right mood. I just seem to want to do better in battleships possibly due to my perception of them, rightly or wrongly.

Update on my rant, sold my fridrich, could not get it to work for me and agree with the top post.Got myself a gneisenau, atleast i am having fun now, most likely will get the bismarck back also as it was fun. Funny how the gneisenau has better armor on almost everything that is important except the bow armor..

I kept the Bismarck but sold off my Friedrich and have no intention of ever getting a Kurfurst.

Already have the Missouri for T9 and Yamato for T10. Now I just have to learn how to play these big DD's that lack torpedo launchers.

Well my FDG is still stock and i hate it. Only hope when upgraded that it will be playable. Unfortunately i realy wanna get the GK so i will just buy enough beer to ease the pain. Maybe a bottle of schnaps too. Or two. So far my all time favourite GE BB is Gneisenau. DD killer, cruiser molester, so much joy playing her :). Makes me wanna open my checkbook and get the Scharnhorst. After tier 7 gems i realy feel a bit of a letdown... Put a hydro on Gneise and i would never even try to advance beyond tier 7 :)

It sucks because in bow on showsown, it can only shoot 4 guns while its enemies can shoot 6 guns. You are outgunned all the time so if you cannot close in enough to use the secondaries, you are in big troubles.

I've had a few more cruises in her/him. (Although still on the MM loosing streak but meh).

I've been extremely wary of positioning trying to find that ideal point of staying far enough to be able to dodge torps etc and close enough to make the guns work and employ secondaries.

I'd love to say I've been getting constant 150k damage matches but I have been tanking her and starting to make her work. Having a few games more in Iowa it is apparent her guns are terrible but she does handle better in a scrape.

I'm over the rage, it really is a case of adapting to the tier 9/10 meta.

I can see GK is going to be even harder to play well. Strangely I'm looking forward to Montanna.

That is the reason why FDG armour is so bad compared to Bismarck :

2ylur06.jpg

This part is only 100 mm on FdG (compared to 145 mm on Bismarck and 150 mm on GK).

Therefore when you are turning, you get citadel hit....

GK armour at same location :

Bis armour at same location :

Personally I sold Bismarck, hated the FDG (didnt use 420) and bought the Bismarck back once I had some spare credits.

I now have the GK (with 420) but look back with bitterness on the FDG. Decent AA, lovely secondaries, but eats cits like crazy, nothing like the strong feeling you have in Bismarck in tier 8 MM and on top of all that it seemed to be overpen every salvo. Had a few decent games in FDG, but not many.

I like Fat Freddy very much, I'm always having enjoyable games in her. Although I am very close to Grosse Kurrywurst now so will probably sell her :( It does seem to take big cits, and that armour analysis from Darth explains it...

Guess GK is going to be that much better, no point keeping T9s (unless its Money Missouri lol) as the MM is virtually the same. Might as well go into battle as the top dog.

Keep the Bismarck if you liked it .... the FG is a bad boat compre to the bismarck in my eyes... Secondaries arment is the same but you can get faster fire rate on it(with mod).... but in my eyes that aint enugh for the massive, slow , poor armored ship, and fire rate suck too, even if the gus are bigger the low fire aint woth it and the spread is as bad too.

I'm keeping my Fat Freddy even though I'm about to get into a GK.

Something about it just works for me.

Average damage of 85k in it can't be bad!

I've just unlocked the FDG and fully upgraded her with my free xp, I kept the bis however as I love that ship far too much. So far I'm having mixed success in the FDG, shes like a fat older Bis with bigger guns to me and dodging those torps in a fat slow ship isnt fun. However the few games where I've had the support from cruisers and fellow battleships this ship has truly shone, two kills on destroyers with just my secondaries and equal damage to another FDG with main batteries, still getting the feel for her however but I think my reckless charging style that I'm used to in the Bis will have to adapt to being slightly more cautious in the FDG.

The Caution is just the high tier camp meta. Don't push until it's safe etc...

I play FDG as a mid range ship. I've built for CE and Manual AA with 420mm guns and the accuracy module. My stats for it are pretty ok and I think my build fits the meta. You won't be in secondary range that often...

When I got Freddy I thought 'yes! Finally some guns that compete with the other big boys' I was really excited playing the first german dreadnought with something bigger then the 380's.......

Well the excitement didnt last long......what a shotgun dispersion this ship has it's just unbelievably bad. Happily sold it after getting the curryfuhrer

The GK however was worth the hmm how to say this gently ehm, frustrating tier9 grind.

My best performing tierX ship really a Diamond
