Ship you have grown to like

Many - or at least some - of us have some ship (or ships) that we have grown to like over time, despite poor initial impressions and real or imagined flaws in it. One example of mine is Dunkerque. Being a collector of ships, I purchased her even though she had received less than stellar reviews. At first I did not enjoy playing Dunkerque much, so she was left gathering rust at my harbor. However, lately I have found myself picking her up almost daily, and my opinion of the quirky French lady has changed from "meh" to more positive. Sure, there certainly are better ships, but that doesn't mean one can't have fun with her.

Is there any ship that you have grown to like?

American Cruisers: Des Moines.

I only grinded the line because of a bet with a buddy.

"If Trump wins, I will grind the US CA line"

Since i keep my word, i did it and i started to like it after a few games, even tho the Hindenburg stays as my fav T10 cruiser.

Two comes to mind very quickly:

Yugumo and Atlanta

Yugumo with amazing guns and F3

Atlanta RoF is just Legendary... :D

Yes, Yugumo. At first I wasn't very impressed by her, but indeed she has nice guns and she can stealth fire even without CE captain. (At least until WG removes stealth fire from the game.)

Minotaur

If that ship wasn't so squishy it would be absurdly OP.

I hated Kirov, so I expected to hate Konigsberg as well... I've actually been doing okay with it. They both have the issue of laughably large and unarmored citadels, but KB can fire 2/3 of its guns while fleeing. Kirov does the same when advancing. Needless to say, KB's arrangement is better for survival and not being citadeled through the bow. The better shell speed is important for sniping as well.

graf spee. plays kinda weird, but total awesome sauce :). 1st game (my best yet with ags), 117k dmg :D...

Pensacola. Seriously, check my stats in her. She is the AP and accuracy monster and agile enough to avoid most of the return shots. I wish for a better concealment, but hey, as soon as you are spotted you know you are being shot at in her.

Basically every DD.

I am a huge battleship nut, have been since I was about 10 or 11.

I started playing this game in hopes of getting my hands on some juicy RN BBs like KGV..

But alas.

The USN and IJN are and were fine, but did not really fit my style of play (Leeeerooooooyyyyy Jenkinnnnnnnnnnnsssssss) and made me miss the RN too much.

So I switched to DDs and have been playing those ever since, more than battleships. :child:

Furutaka. And I mean old furutaka, before they added another hull for her. She was a painful experience for me (as for most people, I wager) as a hard change from machinegun light cruisers with guns facing in all directions to slow-reloading, slow-turning (oh god, how they turned) guns of furry taco.

And then one learns to use the ship. Learns to pre-aim guns, to waif for the right moment to fire. And gets to wreck equal and lower tier cruisers that don't really know what hit them because so far they've only faced light cruiser machineguns and terribly inaccurate BB guns that fire once every blue moon. Before I was done with her, I actually kinda liked my Furutaka. After the buff I actually bought her back, although I don't really play her much - if I go to tier 5 I generally use Gremmy or one of my colorful Kongos... but I certainly have some fondness for old Furutaka still.

Atago, strangely enough.

Started out not really getting her. Couldn't play escort due to no AA and felt really squishy. Saw her as a weaker Mogami (worse turning, AA and gun placement) or an up-tiered Myoko.

My breakthrough came after not having played her for a while and playing other cruisers and a larger variety of ships.

Now I can keep her alive for a long time, even without using the repair, and playing around her terrific concealment. More than anything I've come to love the IJN 203mm HE shells more than any other weapon in the game.

Bismarck. I remember how everyone said it was such a great ship but when I first got it I didn't really like it. Now I've grown to love it and by extension the FdG. About the FdG, I don't understand the hate for it. I guess it all started with Jingles who hinted it was a piece of crap. But if you know how to play the Bismarck you know how to play the FdG since they are essentially the same! Only the FdG is a massive improvement to the Bismarck in T10 games.

Gneisenau with a speed flag. It's so fun that you can sail full broadside and troll the first two salvos of enemy BBs shooting at you because they can't believe how fast that BB goes with 33'5 knots.  Then is when they start to worry because you start to be so close to them. But then it's too late. :playing:

The last Akizuki I found near me didn't like it either.

Fiji

Wasn't fussed at first...

Then in smoke beside an island, enemy Full health Mogami just floats past, guns pointing the other way. Within 30 seconds, he was gone.

Enemy Pensacola wonders what all that fuss is about, sails past exactly the same as the Mogami. Same result.

That's when I realised the ambush potential of this ship. Now I search for them every match.

Königsberg. First 10-12 games were extremely frustrating. The engine/rudder were knocked out repeatedly. One time I dodged an enemy salvo, and was still on FULL HEALTH....but engine knocked out! :teethhappy:

Since I got the "Last Stand" skill I can now appreciate the rapid-fire, long-range, accurate guns. Very, very good destroyer killer.

The only frustrations now are the Tier 5 MM, and too many BBs in each game with blood lust to kill cruisers, e.g last game where enemy BBs stopped their close-in brawling with my team's BBs and all fired at me 12-15 km away. :)

Belfast and Aoba for me. Had a nightmare in the Aoba as I just couldn't figure the ship and so lost most battles. Just now had an epiphany and doing a lot better in it starting to repair the terrible win rate.

Belfast because it seemed like a sit in a cloud and shoot bunker ship and felt boring as hell. Most people also seemed to think that's the only way to play that ship too. But some decent advice in here and in game and testing and thinking outside the box myself I use it as an aggressive hunter and it's the best fun of any ship I have. Love it.

one more i just have to drop.

i think all the rn cl's from t6 on (haven't played lower ones, yay free xp :great:) deserve their special mentinoing in such a thread. befeared to totally be subpar, these "things"(!) turned out to be very dangerous. easily plopped if played wrong yeah, but if played out to their strenghts: nothing is light about them lol.

Izumo.
I thought I'd hate every moment of her.
She's not stellar, but the guns are punchy, the accuracy is rather good, and her armor can be made to work pretty well.

And the Takao.
I loathed the Myoko's pyramid turret arrangement for it's inflexibility, and I always found the IJN CAs' torpedoes to be annoying to use.
Then comes along the Takao/Atago which solves both problems. Quick turning turrets and forward firing torpedoes? Yes please.

Good topic, OP. For me it was definitely Bayern! Boy did I struggle with that boat in the beginning! I wanted to call it overpenern. But then I started to investigate and learn with the YT people and found out I was shooting too heavy shells in the tier range. Then I actually sought out angled targes, getting close and personal for BB standards, specced it secondary and the citadels started to gather while the secondaries finished them off. A absolutely love this ship now as much as I hated it first.
