Hi all,

How often do you experience WoWs crashes and / or freeze-ups?

Introduction:

I am old IT Pro and most of the time (I hope :hiding:) I know what I am doing...

I got my first computer in the early 1980's! :)

  • ZX Spectrum from London in 1982/1983
  • Commodore 64 in 1984 (I even had 5.25" floppy drive for it - big as a shoebox)
  • Atari ST 512 MB (expanded to 1024 with "piggyback soldering" chips) in 1987
  • PC era started for me in 1992...

I have several computers on which I run "World of Warships":

  • New PC at home (Intel 4 physical cores + 4 logical cores, 16 GB RAM, nVIDIA GTX 1060 6 GB, Win10 x64)
  • Old PC at home (Intel 4 physical cores, 8 GB RAM, nVIDIA GTX 760 2 GB, Win10 x64)
  • Laptop (Intel 4 physical cores + 4 logical cores, 8 GB RAM, AMD GPU 2 GB, Win7 x64)
  • Spare workstation for after hours (Intel 4 physical cores + 4 logical cores, 12 GB RAM, nVIDIA 750 Ti 2 GB, WinVista x64)

Technical problems I sometimes experience:

#1

Game freezes-up in port when I change flags.

The only remedy is to kill the EXE (via "Task Manager") and restart the WoWs.

This happens in both regular build without any MODs, with some Aslain MODs installed and in "Public Test" builds (without any MODs installed).

Also this happens on all my desktop PCs (see above for specs) with frequency of 1-2-3 times a week.

#2

Game suddenly freezes-up during battle.

#3

Game freezes-up during battle just a moment after my ship is destroyed and when I am being transported into "Spectator mode" .

The only remedy is to kill the EXE (via "Task Manager") and restart the WoWs.

This happens in both regular build without any MODs, with some Aslain MODs installed and in "Public Test" builds (without any MODs installed)

Also this happens on all my desktop PCs (see above for specs) with frequency of 0-1 times a week.

#4

Game freezes-up during battle with sudden repeated flashing of the screen (i.e two images constantly swap - usually with purple colorization).

The only remedy is to kill the EXE (via "Task Manager") and restart the WoWs but at this time the FPS drop to 5-10 FPS (in WoWs and any other game/simulation that uses 3D) - the only way to fix it is to restart PC or to manually disable/enable graphics card in "Device Manager".

This happens in both regular build without any MODs and with some Aslain MODs installed. I have never experienced this in "Public Test" builds (without any MODs installed).

Also this happens on all my desktop PCs (see above for specs) with frequency of 0-1 times a month.

#5

In past almost 18 months that I play WoWs I had exactly one (1) EXE crash with exception listed (i.e. pop-up windows telling you that EXE crashed with general info about crash).

General info:

I have high FPS (around 60 FPS almost all the time with everything set to MAX - VSync enabled) on all my 3x desktop PCs and lower values on laptop (graphics set to MEDIUM).

I also have "MSI Afterburner" utility (I use it all the time) and with it I can see all stats for my CPUs and GPUs. When freeze-ups occur I see that WoWs almost never uses 100% of my CPUs and GPUs.

Discussion:

The only device I never had a problem with is laptop but this is also a device I use much less than 3 desktop PCs (95% 3x desktop PCs vs. 5% laptop).

The other "common factor" is usage on nVIDA graphics cards - all 3x desktop PCs have them (albeit different) and all of them have latest drivers installed.

Any similar experience guys?

P.S.

Edited to "4 physical cores + 4 logical cores" where I erroneous written "8 physical cores"

Game sometimes crashes on main loading while getting in the game, but this happens very rarely like once every two weeks or so. Freezes are more common, when changing ships in port or applying camos but they're very short, longer freezes only happen ingame with a very heavy amount of DD fog in an area where my ship is. I'm running an GTX950 and AMD A10 6800K with 16gigs of pc1600 ram, settings on full except shadows medium (for some reason, ob my machine it's a huge fps loss) and at 1920x1600 resolution powering Samsung 32 inch monitor.

All in all, imho freezes shouldn't happen with my pc, but theyre far in between and short to really bother me personally.

I've yet to see any specs for actual 8 core mobile CPU so you sure you're not messing HyperThreading to actual cores?

(not that AMD's to be finally neck shotted Faildozer's wimpy core and half of another modules are better)

And GTX 7xx cards are so old that newer drivers are more likely to break things than improve anything.

Nvidia simply doesn't care of older cards, but wants to sell another new excessively priced card, so testing drivers with them is likely priority number 1000+X*Y*Z.

Occasionally have read people even noticing old card suddenly getting smaller score in test programs with newer driver after new cards have been released.

Myself using GTX680 with many years old drivers.

Feels like I've just been mugged down memory lane.

Bought my rubber key 48k Speccy the week before they dropped the price from £175 to £125.  Went on to get the smelly sparky printer, microdrives with almost 100k storage and a modem which ran  casually ambled along at 1200 down 75 up. In some ways I feel sorry for later generations because they have available and take for granted  things we couldn't even dream of whereas us old farts saw jaw dropping advancements on a regular basis (or so it seems)

No game crashes since the last 3 or 4 patches but what I am finding is that I'm late loading in by up to 30secs on a fairly regular basis since the last couple.

You are correct - I copy pasted from my old post of mine... argh...  it should have been written 4+4 (i.e. 4 physical cores + 4 logical)...

Freezing in port, happens soo much and I'm soo used to it I forgot to include that in my vote.

I haven't installed the last two Nvidia drivers because they didn't go well with this game. Older ones run better for myself.

Ah the old days of computers, loading by cassette tape and listening to the screeching. The graphics back then, how did we manage Lol. I had a spectrum 128k +2 in place of your Commodore :) Had the old one too but upgrading to 128k over my friends with 64k, how special I felt heh!.

Depends on what yo mean by "freeze-ups"

I often get small lag spikes that freeze the screen for a split second, but nothing enought to affect the gameplay

the same can't be said for that... "Other" game that us WG folk don't talk about that's also just added boats *Shudders*

I meant complete "Freeze-Ups" when you must kill EXE via "Task Manager" and reload game completely...

The game has crashed on me about half a dozen times since I started playing in early september, and with almost 3500 games played.

It has never frozen.

Having said that I do have a pretty uber set-up, and a very good connection to the interwebz.

well I have micro freezes in the port all the time.

My biggest problem is when playing CV. I get lots of fps drops and most importantly 1-2 second freezes combined with my ping sometimes going up to 200ms (my normal is about 20-35).

Same happens after my ship dies and I watch the battle from free cam, it is like my PC goes into energy saving mode or something...

I get some insane hard crash with screen corruption on my laptop but I've got a feeling it's because of overheating. Fine with other games but i think ships is CPU intensive.

I don't get crashes very often, but I frequently get freezes when the game is loading a battle. It just sits there and the countdown never appears. This requires manually killing the process with task manager and reloading, by which time you are lucky to still be alive.

I can't remember when I had the last crash. I was about to say never, but I think it happens before. But that was really some time ago. As for freezes I can say that I have never experienced that. In my opinion the game runs way smoother since I have switched it onto a SSD.

Also I don't use any mods. Imho most problems arise from those.

It's never crashed for me. Recently I had a couple instances where the login button was unresponsive or I'd get logged out immediately, but it might have been my connection. Runs pretty flawlessly otherwise.

WoWS has been pretty stable and i've been playing it since Closed Alpha. Yes, it was in excellent form even in alpha stage. I'm also doing localization work for WGN and i have access to their localization servers that run interim versions, those are also in excellent condition, Lesta has been amazing on that department.

That said, i've started experiencing frequent sudden freezes (need to kill from task manager) both in port and in game but this is a quite recent problem. I haven't done any troubleshooting but i'm suspecting either the latest 0.5.16 patch or the latest nvidia drivers. My money is on nvidia but it hasn't gotten frequent enough for me to bother checking yet.

PS: Packet drops both in port and while in game has always occurred. I've never been sure if it was internet hiccuping or a problem with the client but those have never caused disconnects or freezes.

Have you checked DPC latency for possible clues to cause?

I had serious problems of game freezing while in queue for battle. Had to restart it from task manager many times and it was extra frustrating for me (I guess for my team too :) ). However , after uninstalling the xvm I was running (Aslain's WOWS xvm) the problem ceased to exist.

seems to a problem with WoWs as other games run smoothly on my crappy Laptop

I think WOWS is extremely cpu intensive. Even stress testing won't crash my laptop.

On my main PC Ships is 100% stable but I'm liquid cooled and on Nvidia. I've found AMD unstable in the past and go there again.

ships once so far fingers crossed, but tanks... since the last update it crashes every single battle, support made the usual suggestions, and have now passed me on to tech support, but that was a week ago now, i get 'video driver has stopped working and restarted' or 'default wattman settings have been appiled'.

msi R9 380 4gb with pentium G3258 (running un-overclocked at 65fps and very low temps)

Had trouble with an aslain mod months ago. But that was a software problem. Other than the server crashes I had 1 or 2 non-loaders (waiting Q to eternity). I think both were server glitches too: checked the player count and it remained the same for minutes.

Ive had some problems in division lately.

When divisioning I press battle and you get into the battle lobby (just before you press start and enter the battle).

There the logo is spinning and you have the 3 tabs. Everything works (you can actually watch the game in the third tab - sort of the minimap), but the logo never stops spinning and the button never shows up - you are stuck.

The only solution is to completely kill the game process and restart it ... making you AFK for some time.

I've had neither crashes nor freezes, but I have had my GUI disappear twice in the last few weeks. The game continues and you can fire your weapons (torpedo indicator is still there), but no selected target indicator makes hitting things tricky. Rebooting WoWS fixes it, but it's a little annoying in the middle of a match. XD
