Lots still around...

I still play mine daily.

It can be difficult to noobs to use as it doesn't really do anything very well a part from maybe torps.

I have Atago in port, but rarely use it as i am not good with cruisers, quite some time since i last saw one in battle, maybe i need to pay more attention to ships in teams

It's an excellent balance of all attributes a cruiser wants.

Good HE and acceptable AP (won't be getting cits at 15km like KM Cruisers but still lethal close in).

As said above, amazing torpedo arcs with almost 360 degree coverage and a lot you can spit out.

Choice of hydro or defensive AA. I take hydro to spot torps and DDs.

Very forgiving heal, just run away and hide for a bit then come back for another go.

It's armour is actually decent for a cruiser. If you face directly bow or stern from a BB they will very rarely cit you. They will get penetrating strikes but won't be catastrophic.

Very fast, almost DD fast with a speed flag on.

Concealment with CE is frankly op. 9.1km is terrifying for Russian DD upstarts. Still viable without CE however.

I took the Atago (maybe it actually carried me) all the way to Rank 1 last season.

that last sentence, are you drunk?

The guns are incredible, the torps are everything but your main weaponry and should only be used when the moment asks for it, you are a cruiser not a no-brain IJN DD.

I do agree that for noobs its a hard to play ship since it is extremely squishy, but not because the guns are bad.

Well I mostly play BB so Atago guns are going to feel slightly bad :teethhappy:

The guns are not forgiving for noobs, then again what is at that tier...

what

I play BB's mostly as well but the HE does incredible damage, and AP salvos are just devestating.

When would you use AP other than vs broadside cruisers under 10km? I've never bothered at ranges further due to the long reload time and implications if I didn't score a decent set of hits.

I think what I'm trying to say is nothing felt like it stood out as amazingly op but when played well it adds up to a pretty amazing package.

I think the main reason is due to the German BB influx recently. The range of the Atago's guns is slightly lacking against these ship, so when it's me against 6 BB's and my 15km range, I tend to get frustrated or stick to DD's.

I shoot AP at everything giving broadside less than 13 Km away unless its a DD

Atagos perform extremely well vs German BBs thanks to high HE damage

Good guns but Mogami's guns are a bit better due to layout and IIRC fire rate.

OTOH the torpedo arcs more than make up for that and then there's the HEAL... yeah, Atago ftw.

I got an Atago and a Takao... mainly take Takao out for the lulz, admittedly, and I have her setup differently from the Atago. ... Interestingly enough, I think my Takao setup is better. At least, I've squeezed much higher performance out of it than with the Atago in far less time.

I won the takao then lucked out with Atago in a Christmas gift :D

First game, team killed someone.

I swear that ship actually reduces your brain cells :D

Congrats. And heheh, yeah, it's really easy to teamkill people with loltorping in that thing. 10km torps, hard hitting and decently fast? Really need to be careful where you're firing them since it's so much more likely you'll get opportunities with it that don't require exposing broadside for enemy farming citadel ribbons off you. :)

Maybe if the MM didn't class T8 cruisers as T10 ships you'd see the Atago more often, i enjoy the ship, but at T10 you are pretty much reduced to being an oversized DD with not so good torps and not so good concealment, sure you can set stuff on fire consistently , but as soon as you shoot, you become a primary target for BBs.

Nothing wrong with the ship, plenty wrong with match making.

Lolwut. It's my most played ship, and I usually encounter one every other game that I take her out.

You sum it up well, i was citadelled from the stern by a T10 ship and sunk soon after, the armour is just too weak

I have the Takao. With that said, I hate it with a passion. It just doesn't fit my play style.

I actually like my Kutuzov better now that I figured how to play her. She's a beast.

Atago is still a very good ship regardless.

personally I find it a nice ship to play but with more and more premiums and ship lines released it gets shoved further and further down my play list

the HE rounds are epic and ive had some gob smacking moments when I played the atago in ranked battles and raped a bb player who ignored me because I was angled to him
