Dunkerque vs. Graf Spee - The Greatest Battle that Was Never Fought

  1. 1. If the French battleship Dunkerque faces off against the German cruiser Admiral Graf Spee - what will be the outcome?

    • The Dunkerque will win
    • The Graf Spee will win
    • It will be a draw

We have read about them - we have seen pictures of them - there have been youtube videos made about them!

The Admiral Graf Spee, ruthless raider, scourge of the Atlantic and terror of the allied shipping! Every warship that could catch her, she could sink - and any ship that could fight her, she could run away from! A Teutonic Terror of mythical proportions, she feared nothing that moved on face of the ocean.

Nothing, that is, except the mighty Dunkerque. Faster than the Graf Spee, boasting more and bigger guns than the Graf Spee, and cunningly constructed so that retreat was not an option, the French Fury was straining against her anchors, eager to do battle with her Aryan Adversary!

But that battle never took place. The fickle gods of war decided otherwise, and the ships met their separate ends without ever having trained their rangefinders on each other. For decades, naval historians have debated on what would have happened, if such a momentous meeting had taken place. Who would have emerged victorious? It was impossible to say.

It was impossible - but no longer! Thanks to recent developments in modern computer gaming technology, those great ships now sail again, and we will soon see it. We will soon see the outcome...

..the outcome of the Greatest Battle that Was Never Fought!

What do YOU think will happen?

Dunk was built to chase down Panzerschiffe. Graf Spee would need a LOT of luck - outgunned, out-armored etc.

I have to agree with all the above posts. Unless the Graf Spee could manage to pull off a torpedo ambush, or maybe manage to stay behind and beyond the firing arcs of the main guns on the Dunkerque, I cant really vote for a German victory, here.

I love the placement of the torp tubes of AGS.

They say "Plz detonate me here!!"

I like the text on those torpedo tubes even better: "If you are close enough to target this, it's about to sink you."

  Germans would easily win.

The French navy has been good for nothing at all since the 18th century during the ARW.

1939, the Graf Spee would have a real chance.

No radar on Dunkerque, and when the Spee comes from behind they could rape the Dunkerque. (Easy with low smoke of Diesel engines.)

Similar to the weather gage in old sailing days. :honoring:

If were talking in game then its 100% RNG, if we talk history, then favor goes to the Germans, as they had superior tech and experienced crews where the [edited] RN had to sink a single vessel using over 5 ships pretty much on every German capital ship, so what chance does the French stand? On paper its Frecnh maybee. So theres no right answer to it, personal thoughs? Well id go for the Graf.

One could perhaps argue that making use of numerical superiority is sound strategic thinking, irrespective of whether it is done by pussies, [edited] or arseholes? :) The Kriegsmarine knew that it could never float enough warships to actually defeat the Royal Navy, but I am fairly certain that the Germans would have used more ships, if they'd had them. As for the French Navy, it never really got the chance to prove itself - the battle for France was decided on land.

History aside, my poll is mainly concerned with how the two ships would fare against each other in the game. As I have written above, my money would be on the Dunkerque. Assuming two players of equal skill, that is - and RNG is, as always, the great equalizer.

The Dunk on paper should win unless ambushed and takes torps.

That been said there is all ways luck both in game and real life and why the Dunk was made to counter the Graff you can never take in to account a un/luck hit that could cripple the Dunk or even lead to its loss.

You need only look at the Graff to see how luck can effect a battle she was crippled fighting 3 light cruisers that she out gunned and was made to counter with out sinking any of them dispite dealing heavy damage to them she was forced to run away.

The Dunkerque was designed to counter the Deutschland class. So, on paper (and for this poll) i vote for a french victory (which is somehow ironic). Even if the Spee would manage to surprise the Dunkerque and get her outpositioned, the Dunkerque would have the advantage in the most traditional french strategy: a quick retreat. This way, she could make it out of range, turn, and prepare a field for her favours (maybe). However, history has shown many times, that battles can have a different result from the expected one, no matter the odds. So, who would have known...
