I take back everything I said about RN cruisers

I bought the Belfast and was relunctant there after to carry on the RN tree grind. After a while players have learned that aiming into the small smoke cloud still gives a great chance of hitting a RN cruiser hard. That or torp into it and the RN cruiser will pop out doing circa 10 knots and you can volley him. Infact Ive been sank undetected in smoke to blind shots, the smoke is so small its hard to keep momentum back and forward as you do in a DD. After people started to realise the counter to belfast I thought I'd continue the grind. Just got into the Fiji.

WOW.

First game and I find myself smiling from ear to ear.

Not the strongest ship in terms of HP or stealth (still grinding CE on 15 point captain)

What I have noticed is the guns seem a different line of ships altogether. It's an incredible improvement on the leander.

I'm not the best player in the world, very casual and i don't get hung up on stats, after all  when in a team with 9 random players means you can give it you're best, kill 3,4,5 ships and still lose. The RN line was a horrible and frustrating grind which I was happy to be vocal about, but for some reason the Fiji just feels so much more rounded, like a glass canon, you are always going to be weak from broadsides but keep an angle and now finally I can hit as hard as I am being hit at least. Citadel heaven!

I just have so much more faith in the guns.

The most fun ship I've been in for a while, after my shmiakaze days were over I've not had as much fun since.

Hoping the Burgh, Neptune and minotaur are all as much fun.

I would say to all, the grind to the Fiji is worth it. I would say free XP it but perhaps the grind is worth it to make you appreciate the Fiji that much more.

Yes! I've been saying it all along - and I'm someone who also doesn't like the Belfast much, it almost put me off grinding up.

Fiji Is likely the only ship I'll never sell. Edinburgh is better, of course, but just a bit less stealthy (just as squishy though).

Premium smoke on it and you are extremely dangerous to everything except DDs, which you can just chase down and execute, and especially dangerous to BBs who just cannot tank the damage those well-aimed guns can do under 10km. It's the only ship I've managed a kraken on :D

Yes it is a little better Fiji but has much worse MM . For me Fiji was monster, and Eedinburgh was somehow "meh" nothing special. And when you get a Neptune it is like going from Leander to Fiji , from not bad ship to a bloody monster

nah the UK cruiser are only strong because of the "magical" pen value, i mean u can pen armor on ship that can bounce even bb shels, and that's abit stupid but its ok because its for the "balance" of the game.

I'm struggling a little with Neptune, but I think it's because of the gameplay at tier X.

RN ships, for me, are about getting up close and either firing from smoke or hunting DDs, neither of which is made easy by edge hugging BBs and 'attacks' which turn tail at the first sign of resistance. DDs are the only ships which seem to engage at under 15km, everything else hanging back and sniping.

Also struggling with Neptune - great guns but Tier 9 and 10 BBs don't miss often! Give them an inch and you simply die! The citadel on the Neptune is much bigger and the ship is nothing like as user friendly as the Fiji. I do agree completely about the Edinburgh - an even better Fiji but up against better opposition. Have about the same WR in both - much worse so far in the Neptune and the Belfast has been underwhelming -trying playing her like the Fiji with AP mainly but miss the torps!

I normally suck playing cruisers so i don't play them much, but i'm a sucker for premium ships and royal navy too so I got the belfast a couple of days ago.

First game was bad. I did my usual thing in cruisers of getting too close to the enemy fleet too early and getting focused down fast.

Second game was better, stayed back behind the DDs and popped smoke as soon as the enemy appeared. I love the rate of fire on the Belfast and the AP pen on broadside cruisers is fun. managed to get a kraken in my second game in the ship so i'm pleased and now plan to grind the RN cruiser line just to see what the rest of the ships are like.

Still want the RN BBs tho...

I wouldn't be suprised if the RN BBs are a year off.

I'm finding it frustrating that the higher tiers are very stand off ish, all the BBs sit right back. If youre on a map with a lot of island cover you can get away with being more aggressive and pushing up.

On the more open maps its smoke fire, then dont fire again until your smoke renews, otherwise you are primary target.

I think my problem is patience, the higher tier games need a lot more of it.

I free XP'd to the Fiji, was a pleasure to grind through, the AP can still go from wrecking face to very little when people angle but usually there are plenty of targets about sailing broadside.

Edinburgh is probably not much of a step up because the firewpower is the same whereas Leaner to Fiji you get 50% more guns, and then Burgh to Neptune you get way more ROF and it steps up again at Minotaur.

The RN cruiser Line is pretty good and balance in some kinda gameplay (depends on you match up)

The special AP ammonition is just great at them and the to constant dmg, meaning as long as you survive long enough you stack very quickly a lot of dmg.

So the best tactic with those ships, is to survive as long as possible.

If RN had HE with their speed, smoke and repair crew BB would cry the whole line to death.

I liked the Edinburgh at first more than the Neptune. The Neptune is a much harder ship to play where as the burgh is just a better Fiji. Starting to get the hang of the Neptune now and I'm not sure the playstyle is as fun, you can never ever show yourself in it due to the citadel size so no escorting your DDs into the cap and absolutely demolishing the enemy DDs anymore. Stay behind islands and / or in smoke at all times.

That said I am still having fun in the Neptune, I just feel like the smoke / island playstyle is not very risky and not as rewarding.

Some of you hate the RN Cruisers, I love them, and I'll tell you why....

This applies to ANY ship, class, tier or nation. Each ship class is different. You cannot expect to drive a New York like you can tin can named Isokaze and you cannot drive that one like the Kolberg. Each ships has its good points and its bad points, when you find out what they are and change your tactics FOR THAT SHIP ONLY, you will be a lot happier. The fact that killerkeano said about some ships because of his efforts with the Fiji proves that point... what he meant was the tactics he stumbled upon, first go, worked for him.

I have heard others say that you never turn your side towards an enemy, mainly BB's but any ship... that means, at most you get to fire six shells from the forward battery... it makes no sense... if it takes 60 shells to sink a BB (as an example) why would you want to fire 10 salvoes to get the job done? Not when you can fire broadside and fire 12 salvoes a go, and get the job done quicker.

TACTICS, discover them then you will never hate any ship again, I have 21 ships in my fleet, I like them all, because I know their limitations.

There are exceptions... I bought the Cleveland and sailed her in many combat mission, I sold it because the ship is a dud. They posted a history video about the class being unsinkable but that wasn't how it played out in the game, one shell.... repeat ONE shell.... from a BB and she was nearly dead. I tried all the tricks and never could tame the beast... so, I moved on.

RN ships, Cruisers, are very good when used for what they were designed for, get in, attack, get out FAST! Its why some have the smoke cannister.

In general, very good advice. :honoring:

There is an exception to every rule - as you yourself pointed out with USS Cleveland ( a ship which you didn't get along with).

I can change my tactics for RN ships to make them work better, all right.  The problem is the old "Catch-22". If I adopt the most effective tactics then I don't enjoy the playstyle.

If this were any other line than the Royal Navy then I would not be so bothered - it's just the ONE cruiser line that I don't like to play is MY countries line - insofar as a set of pixels ina video game can ever be "my navy" LOL  :teethhappy:

"First World Problems" eh? :)

A dud? Yes, you do get them, the ships before and after that model is fine... it could also be that the way I was driving it was wrong and always would be, the point is, its my problem... others seem to be fine with it... just not me.

That was my point... sort of, you and the ship have to bond, if you get along, she will teach you how she should be sailed..

Funny thing, I get on better with the Omaha than I ever did with the Cleveland...

Hah, really liking the Neptune after some initial reservations. Being invincible to a class of ships seems odd though. Neptune anti-air vs a T7 CV, results are predictable.

I don't like the Neptune... at least without CE it is hard to play. It has great damage output and good torps but it is so squishy and with 11.5km concealment and Montanas or other BBs hanging around, I end up exploding quite often. I just spent some of my free XP, I was farming for the Missouri to jump to the Minotaur.

"Neptune or Uranus?"
