Russian / USSR Battleships - what to expect?

With the ongoing development of the game, I expect that we are sooner or later going to see a tree of Russian / USSR battleships sailing down the server. I am sure that I am neither the first, nor the most qualified, to make a guess as to what they are going to be like. I am curious as to which stray thoughts on the matter might be about. To start off a discussion, here are some of mine.

Most USSR ships so far have had excellent guns, across all the lines. They have better range and shell velocity than their peers, they have good AP and HE damage, and they have good or even excellent accuracy. Their destroyers - but not so much the cruisers - have balanced this with slow turret traverse. It would be reasonable to expect some take on this feature to appear in a future battleship line. I find it likely that USSR battleships will have better range than their counterparts, at least in the lower to mid-tiers. While I don't believe that the accuracy will be any better at close range, it might be a bit better at maximum range. This might be balanced out by slower turret traverse and/or weaker armour layout.

An alternative to longer base range might be access to spotter aircraft at lower tiers than their peers.

With better stats at long range, speed might suffer. They would not have to be able to close the distance as fast as, say, a German battleship, and they would prefer heavier armour to speed as a defensive measure. They might possibly have good turning characteristics, at least at the lower tiers.  They would likely have the biggest (i.e. worst) detection ranges of all the battleship lines.

On lower-to-mid tiers we will probably see pre-dreadnoughts and dreadnoughts like the Imperator Nikolai I, although presumably with more balanced stats. From there on might follow the Arkhangelsk and the Novorossyisk, built in USA and Italy but on loan / claimed as reparations respectively. These will probably have the same stats as their national counterparts but with better main armament range (like the current Murmansk light cruiser outranges the Omaha). As for the higher tiers, having googled a bit for actual historical information leads me to hypothesize that we might see some really big USSR "only on paper" battleships, with lots of armour and hit points, bigger than the Yamato but with weaker guns. Something along the lines of the Friedrich der Grosse and Grosser Kurfürst, but more focused on medium to long range than close-quarters brawling, maybe.

Future USSR battleships will not have torpedoes.

I hope.

Please note that these thoughts are not based on any kind of actual game information, from Wargaming or any other source.

And they are certainly not suggestions - I, personally, see no great appeal in a possible line of "sniper battleships" that would further discourage battleship drivers from seeking to be in close contact with the enemy.

And so, over to the community. Any thoughts on this?

They are going to have special ability which " Release the little Tsar bomb". They are going to have nuke onboard. If someone dare to sink it, it would automatically take counter measure which nuking  all cross the entire map as revenge.

Nice thread, most likely we will get those in 2017 though.

Now the big question is how many 'paper ships' will we get? Besides those Parizhskaya Kommuna/Marat - Imperator Aleksander III - Novorossiysk - Arkhangelsk and
Sovetsky Soyuz I do see a lot of paper concepts or even imaginary ones arriving.

Given the Russian cruisers/DD lines I can see battleships with average to bad armor except when bow on, very long range guns with incredible accuracy and rate of fire, average to great AA, radar + sonar + def AA, bad agility and turning circle but great rudder shift, horrible concealment.

Less seriously.

Since they will be USSR stronk ships you can expect the following:

- 490mm of armor protecting the citadel, 300mm deck armor and a bow with 150mm of armor.

- Artillery: 800mm guns in 4x4 turrets with incredible accuracy at 28km range and of course stalinium shells with excellent normalization values.

- Special flag: Giving you 180sec of immunity to fire

- Sonar + radar + smoke.....

Whatever you think or imagine WG will still impress you with thier ideas.

I just hope for balance.

But I think 2 oldest techtree (US and IJN) will still be behind the new introduced ones.

Ah the famous USSR Battleship fleet, famous for such actions as...

.....

and

....

What to expect? Fervent Patriotism for the motherland.

In game: Tier X Sovetsky Soyuz will be the best ship in the game.  However if they want to be historically accurate, she should only have 230mm of armour.

well  from what i read all over the forums

the existing ships were either upgraded nicolai like ships (with fictional ww2 upgrades like the low tier germans)

then there are some ships from other navies (like the italina bb)

and there are  possible paperdesignes  -> large and lots of guns (pretty much supersized nicolais)

They had their own WW1 designs, then used some ships from other nations (rather poorly AFAIK) and then after that plans for Yamato / Montana class designs that did not become reality. Because technical difficulties and such.

Good luck finding an interesting and unique flavor in this. I guess it would be more fantasy than anything else. Weak armor would probably be the only historical fact that you could truthfully incorporate into the game (I read that they had difficulties creating the cemented armor which is one of the reasons they used foreign stuff).

I only Hope that they will be balanced, doesn't matter the flavour -being a fantasy line; btw i expect something weird like radar for all the line or the "absolutely realistic design developed for real, sure!" Of a GK with Yamato turrets at t10.

Ah and obviously they will sail at 43knot cause they were designed to enscort 43knot russian DDs with their fake Speed...

First, Russia got geographically screwed when it came to ports, which is why Vlad the Invader is so hot to get his hands on Georgia, Crimea and Baltic States.

Second, If we follow normal CCCP doctrine for post war weapons development, we'll see a German battleship re-engineered (or perhaps De-engineered) to make it cheaper and easier to manufacture in a lower tech economy and simplified for operation by a conscripted peasant army. This is exactly where and why the AK47 and RPG-7 came about. (AK47 = Sturmgewhr 44 re-manufactured from stamped metal parts instead of precision milled components. Likewise the RPG7 can trace its origins to the Panzerfaust).

So a Russian ship would be designed to break out through the Greenland Iceland Gap or Denmark straits and into the North Atlantic. It would be designed to push aside NATO forces and open a gap for the Ballistic missile boats to scatter across the globe, and it would then fulfil a secondary role of disrupting western shipping in the Atlantic.

IMO expect a Bismark variant, a little larger and wider to make it more seaworthy and take into account that Russian equipment is usually larger than German equivalents due to a more robust construction. Probably with icebreaker bows for all year operations in Bering Straits. Guns will be typical Russian stronk stalinium launchers, which is historically incorrect, as the CCCP never had the technology or inclination to manufacture super accurate barrels due to their use of poorly trained conscripted personnel.

It is a good idea tho. This game does need a Battleship Potemkin.

I suppose they could just release a RN line first, even CV's of the RN, before going the paper Soviet route.

And German destroyers of course.

I'm awaiting the arrival of RN BB one day... But can you imagine the BB Hell the game will become!? Like German BB now except far far worse

Yes. I for one hope we get more dd and cruiser lines before too many BBs lines.

However I am really looking forward to Sovetsky Soyuz in game. It's OP as hell in the tabletop Wargame Victory at Sea.

While this topic has been discussed before...

The Russians lost their fleet at Tsushima and only built a handful of pre- and dreadnought battleships afterwards. Considering Russia being the largest country in the world naval strength was never really a priority even though there were a couple of leaders pushing the navy nevertheless (Peter the Great, Stalin,..)

As pre-dreadnoughts are pretty much out of scope you really only have the Ganguts and Imperatsiya Marya dreadnoughts which are pretty similar (along with the never built Nikolai). Everything else was either projects or Stalin's wet dreams of a blue water navy. A possible line up could be:

T3 Vodka fantasy vol 1

T4 Vodka infused fantasy version of Imperatsia Marya

T5 Sevastopol/Gangut WW2

T6 Arkhangelsk (British R-Class)

T7 Krohnstadt (Russian Gneisenau kind of BC)

T8 Stalingrad (the "more real" Moskva) or Project 21 (Russian Nelson)

T9 Sovietsky Soyuz paper Iowa

T10 a ship that really makes the Yamato look like a dinghy (eg. Project 24)

All in all I agree with the "flavor" of insane gun characteristics. Hope this won't promote further camping again

Expect a stupidly  OP ships with their only drawback being that you can see them from far away.
