A little forewarning about JoJo's Bizarre Adventures: the first season "Phantom Blood" is bit slow and really only good to introduce some characters, their feud and the basic setting. If it feels a bit underwhelming ... it's because it is (at least compared to the rest of the series!). Season #2 and onwards though, the funtrain starts rolling in earnest and it has no brakes!

Okay, I have to do some advertisement here....

!!! SCRUBS IS GOOD FOR YOUR WINRATE !!!

I got shanghaid into invited to 5CRUBS on the 9th of October.

From the 1st to 8th of October I did 91 battles of which I won 59, giving me a 64.84 % winrate (all solo)

and after getting 5crubbed:

From the 9th to the 14th of October I did 56  battles of which I won 37, giving me a 66.07 % winrate (all solo, too)

I only did 4 battles in 3 player division. All won. Added to the above that would make it 60 battles, 41 wins and a 68.33 % winrate

So just being a member of scrubs made my winrate get better nearly automatically! That's what You get from being a 5CRUB!!!

Ye, instead of Germans going into English, English shall into German. Still can't understand what has ****** the minds of modern Germans so much that they use so many english words. Like one example that really rustles me is the word railgun.

So instead of saying Schienenkanone anymore, you just call it "Railgun" nowadays. Jesus. Is it because muh self flogging in guilt or what. Or Rechner -> Computer.

The best thing is, we (ze germanz) even invent our own english words. Like Handy for a smartphone. Or - and that is the greatest joke - a fried chicken (Brathähnchen in real german) was called Broiler in the German Democratic Republic (the russian Besatzungszone :Smile_hiding:) - so a part of Germany, where kids were taught russian at school used a pseudo-english word for something, which was already properly named with a german word...

And ze English go into german for quite a while already... just think of Blitzkrieg, Autobahn, Kindergarten and all those other little things they took from us. For some time already they even import our german Weihnachtsmarkt to Britain.

But yes, the tendency to use unnessecary english words instead of their german equivalent is quite dumb. But kinda logical, considering that about every schoolkid is learning english at school for the last 50 years or so. And because of english being the main language of the world's trade system. So big companies often used english sounding nonsense words in their commercials and on the interwebz about everything good is done in english... so why not use that stuff in average day life, too?

Nah... playing division means I would play less games than I do solo...

Why?

Easy: when playing in Division chances are good to survive a battle to the end. And even if I get sunk before the end of battle, it would be the polite thing to not leave the division and wait for the battle to end....

When I play solo it's either survive to the end or get sunk and immediately start a new battle with a different ship. And as I get sunk often and early usually, that means many more battles when playing solo :Smile-_tongue:

Yeah, on day to day use between the "ordinary people". But when an existing native word gets officially replaced by a foreign word (like the word for railgun), it's just imho digusting.

9349 battles played... winrate of 55.04 % - grab a calculator and check how many battles we will need, to get me to... say... 60.00 % or so :Smile-_tongue:

Sorry, but Schienenkanone just sounds scheiße... A bit like Gesichtserker instead of Nase (= Nose) which was supposed to be injected as "the real german word" during the 1000 years between 1933 and 1945. Some words aren't just "cool" enough today... and sometimes the german word doesn't even have the same meaning. Like cool. When something is "cool" it is not cold. But the german word "kühl" (which would be the proper translation...) is nearly entirely used for temperature and not to define the "coolness" of some clothes or music or whatever...

So, in fact, cool has become a german word with it's own meaning, which will never be used to define temperature, as it can in english.

And You should not forget, that the german language (like many other, english too...) already has a lot of words from other languages - french, latin etc. - integrated in it.

The good old german word "Fenster" (= window) comes from the latin fenestra. The english still use window, which reminds a bit of the origin of the word "vindr auga" (wind eye)

So trying to keep out all foreign language words from a language is so stupid, that only the french attempt it (and in fact fail at it, as french has sooooo much latin in it, that every selfrespecting celt is rotating in his grave when a french word is uttered).

Well, I guess you kinda don't get my opinion/what I mean. Ofc there will be loanwords, and english and german both as germanic languages have it easier time to loan to each other. And Nase is still different from nose, even if it's a loanword. And it would be stupid to try to change the Nase into something different. I just don't understand replacing existing words as I said. Even Railkanone could be better imho. But I guess it's up to taste and "worldview". To make myself more clear, I'm not "hating" every word that has foreign roots, those loanwords have been there always. Like for ex. in Finnish you can use word holotna to say if you're feeling cold, and holotna is a Russian loanword. I just dislike replacing the existing words with something new, wheter it be Nase with Gesichtserker or Schienenkanone with Railgun.

Even though I agree with Wolf, or at least sort of, I cannot help myself using a lot of english in my dutch. Doesn't help that I speak a dutch dialect as well, so I'm switching between three languages on a daily basis... And words slip in here and there.

Another thing that doesn't help is that I know quite a lot of people that study english. They tend to use a lot of english words as well in their dutch (if they aren't flat out speaking english).

BUT, I get really annoyed if in commercials or politicians and the like use english "buzzwords" to make things sound interesting even though a completely normal dutch word would work just as well. Because the youth uses specific english words, it apparently is a thing to randomly use english terms for everything. Oh "adults", you so silly...

I don't watch DB Super so I couldn't tell if its any good, but DBZ: Abridged is a fanmade parody (Hellsing Ultimate Abridged is aswell) and it's absolutely amazing. At times I even feel like it's better than the original that it parodies.

Well, apart from the sound shift, which happened a couple hundred years ago (I guess) it is the same word, taken from the same root, the latin nasus. :Smile_teethhappy:

15 hours ago, WolfGewehr said:

Well, unnecessary replacement of words of course is kinda dumb. Unless the new words maybe fits or sounds better than the original word, hai?

Take Computer as an example. You would like us germans to use the german word Rechner for it instead. Sometimes we even do, but Rechner isn't the proper word for what a computer does. Rechner is a way more fitting word for an mechanical or electronical calculator, and for these the word is commonly (and properly) used. A Computer does not only calculate, but compute stuff. With calculating being the more basic process of getting sums and computing being the act of using complex formula to achieve a result.

So Computer is a way more fitting word for what that thing does than Rechner could be.

It's about the same with Spaghetti Bolognese. Of course we could call it Nudeln mit Hackfleischsoße (= Noodles with a sauce of chopped meat, which, in fact, isn't even a real sauce Bolognese, as that is not made with chopped meat, but I digress..) but would that really be better?

I go totally d'accord with you, that using the english "softener" instead of the german - fitting and not really sooo bad sounding - Weichspüler (for the stuff you put into the washing machine to get the laundry soft and smelling good) is utterly dumb. BUT it's the industry who does it. And they have a good reason for it. Globalization.

Even more fun are product names, that have made their way into all day life. Tempo for paper handkerchiefs. Coca for a certain range of softdrinks etc.

And then there are all those neat little leanwords from our japanese friends (see above..) that are used so commonly all over the world and even in this forum. Do you dislike them, too? Or do you call a manga a japanese comic? Do you use the word hentai for a certain kind of manga perhaps? What about Futanari, lolicon and all the other stuff? Do you use finnish words for that, when talking about it? 'Cause I would bet, there are finnish words for all of it, as like there are german words for it, too. :Smile_hiding:
