EsaTuunanen Beta Tester 3,552 posts 8,863 battles Report post #8 Posted November 16, 2016 So I found this nice little Video that shows how german ship names are pronounced to help out non native speakers Funny thing... That's how I would pronounce almost every cruiser and BB. As native speaker of Finnish, which (except for alphabets) is in no way related to most European languages. Or maybe it's because words are basically pronounced like they're written instead of all that pronouncing mess of English.
[HABIT] Tungstonid Beta Tester 1,568 posts Report post #9 Posted November 16, 2016 It is Prinz Eugeeen! Long "e"! Which is something one could argue about. I knew this name before I heard of the cruiser but with a short "e". So depending on where you come from, either pronunciation can be right. However, for the cruiser the version with the long "e" is correct.
Nethraniel Beta Tester 1,739 posts 1,782 battles Report post #10 Posted November 16, 2016 The guy talking in the video is clearly native German speaker. So everything fine. With the long 'e' you might be right, because the Austrian general Eugen von Savoyen, who's name was used for the ship, was pronounced with a longer 'e'. However, the short 'e' for Eugen also exists and is quite common.
Oely001 Players 3,015 posts 7,832 battles Report post #11 Posted November 16, 2016 (edited) "Prinz Eugen von Savoyen" is with long "e", there is nothing to argue about. It has nothing to do with the common name "Eugen". English speakers often say it wrong, but wrong is wrong even if it is often said wrong. Same with "Naga-to" and "Yama-to". Nethraniel Beta Tester 1,739 posts 1,782 battles Report post #14 Posted November 16, 2016 (edited) Is it true that German ships are male? No. Even though most ship names are from male military or political figures, the ships are also referred to as female. So you will say something like 'die Bismarck' , 'die Yorck', 'die Tirpitz' which is the female article (equivalent to 'the'). Ship in itself is of neutral gender in the German language. [ALA] Bismarck_chan Players 392 posts 5,330 battles Report post #16 Posted November 16, 2016 (edited) Is it true that German ships are male? It's not as unified as in English. I have read an German account of the Battle of Jutland where at least SMS Seydlitz and SMS Kaiser were referred to as male. But I have also seen ships being referred to as female. I have read an German account of the Battle of Jutland where at least SMS Seydlitz and SMS Kaiser were referred to as male. But I have also seen ships being referred to as female. That would be odd... you would expect a male reference only if you would write a sentence like 'der Schlachtkreuzer SMS Seydlitz' ('the battlecruiser SMS Seydlitz') which would correlate the male article to 'battlecruiser' and not the ship name.
Oely001 Players 3,015 posts 7,832 battles Report post #18 Posted November 16, 2016 A ship is a "she" in German, too. Pretty much the same like in English. Nelson was of course a male, but HMS Nelson is female; same with Bismarck, Tirpitz, Seydlitz, etc. "Das Schiff" (the ship) is Neutrum. p.s.: I think Hitler said that Bismarck should be "der Bismarck" (male) because it/she was so strong. But that idea did not last.
