What ships to use for ranked from random Noob

Since I am now on the west side of the US the time difference means I am stuck playing alone most of the time (say hello Unicum stats and 50% win rate) . 

I decided to give ranked a try. Now 60 or so battles in I moved from rank 17 to rank 8 with about a 65% win rate. Sounds good? haha no, far from it. Anyways, here is what I learned what ships to use.

 

1) Battleships: I have the Amagi, North Cal and the Tirpitz. I dont have the Bismark but I like having torpedos (spelled on purpose like that) over long secondaries. The Amagi is amazing because because its guns wreck all other BB's at its tier and all other ships for that matter making it my #1 choice. With CV's being rare (I may have had 4 matches with them so far) the North Carolina is at a disadvantage being lackluster in its guns and armor compared to her peers. The Tirpitz and Bismark are lackluster (in my opinion of couse) because the guns are sub par and even though their armor prevents citadels it doesnt do anything at absorbing regular dmg.

Main point.....Although BB's are awesome in ranked at getting over 100k dmg easy they are a poor choice if you want to control who gets the win because they are too slow and one DD's will easily wreck them. 

 

2) Cruisers: lol they suck in ranked (yes hate me if you want). I will keep it short, they dont do enough dmg fast enough vs BB's and take way too many citadels to stay health until end of match.

 

3) Destroyers: I have a Benson with an 18 point Captain. 5.8km spotting range with last stand and torpedo reload. Now here is a machine that allows you to control the outcome of the match.

Fubuki is a poor choice in my eyes because its guns just plain and simply can't keep up with its peers. Lo yang is nice and all but its not a Benson. Tashkent......why do people like to lose?

I would recommend the Benson as the #1 choice only if you have maxed out Captain and have the ability to hit 90%+ with the first salvo vs other dd's. ALSO only if youre not a total (female dog) and play aggressively. 

 

4) CV's=cancer. Seriously though, I dont have cv and have not seen them enough in ranked to judge them.

1. for battleships nr.1 choice should be bismarck with secondaries build. while it doesnt have main guns firepower, its secondaries are deadly for dd and really annoying for everything else (fires everywhere). german hydro is also good for detecting torps and hunting smoked dd-s. main guns reload is great for killing ca and dd.

amagi is great, but it doesnt have pushing power.

2. chappy is really annoying with its almost 12km radar. with dd smoke support and clever usage of islands you can hunt dd-s without problem, or at least serve as big deterrent to enemy dd. atago and kutuzov are also very good choices. i agree that cruisers suck in ranked, but mostly cause they are piloted by stupid players and not cause they are that weak.

3. agree that benson is beast, lo yang is good, fubuki is doable, but requires good player and tashkent is just big target for everyone.

4. people who are good in cv will know if they should take them. for everyone else avoid.

If you want to get to higher ranks use BB or DD preferably the Bismarck or Benson, Cruisers avoid unless you own some of the pay to win ship as they tend to perform badly.

well i drive dd, so i find chappy most annoying ca have lost lots of hp cause of hidden chappies. citadels arent as much of a problem if you can trade one chappy for 2 enemy dd. team that loses all of its dd is usually team that loses.

Dunno, but my Kutuzov HE just adores those BB. So, provided my DD don't die at the start ( which seems to be hard from time to time ), you can just sit behind cover and keep putting the pressure on BB repaits and DC.

It has pay to progress (faster), which may or may not be similar / the same thing for some. (Yes the video is about WoT, but some aspects are present in WoWs as well).

Atago with 5th perk is really stronk. And you can hear "OMG FIRE OP NERF PLS" over the sound of burning campfires BB's

Edit:I suppose I'd end up supporting your point considering my two other top ship. Nevertheless, the simple fact is that the Atago is significantly superior to the Mogami and is a premium. The Chapayev is really only an option because of her excellent radar.

Chapayev all the way (DE specked and flags of course ). Got more top guns in that thing than anything else. Burns BB's radars DD's and citadels cruisers. Swiss army knife of ranked but just the soviet version.

I started out trying to play with the NO and while I fully admit I'm no pro player, I'm average, still for me it was a hellish experience.

 

The NO and Mogami are awful ships compared to their same tier counterparts, so don't event try them.

A while later I had enough money to re-buy the Benson, now I'm almost at tier 9

The only bad thing I can say about the Benson in ranked is that I almost never reach the top of the scoreboard, unless I'm part of a really bad team.

On the other hand, as long as I do my part with spotting, capping and smoking I can easily reach second place, just don't expect huge damage numbers.

 

Most of the ships you see on the second tier (tiers 6-10) are Bensons, Chapayevs, Hippers and BBs, with the occasional Fubuki, and it kinda tells you everything you need to know - players who reach those tiers are the ones who understand what ships are viable.

I've only played fubuki in this season, i'm at r8 but i founded it nice.

 

You have the best concealment in t8 so you can spot better, if there are lot of DDs you can try to spot enemies while saying unspotted.

Its guns are worse than Benson but you have more alpha damage, soif you are in 1vs1 even against a Benson you can try to ambush it and the 1/2 salvoes that you can shoot before it starts shooting you and you are not in the big disadvantage that you'll read on the forum, and (Always in 1vs1) if you are running away you can shoot him with 2/3 of your artillery.

 

Torpedo armamento is the best, and with half of the meta based on BBs that's nice, plus i found them realy usefull in knifefight.

 

The only realy Bad things is the manovrability, if you put the flag you can be competitive in stategical issues but if you are spotted and there is more than One enemy DDs in line of Fire you are simply death.

 

 

Plus, in New economy been the team member that spot mean you get lot of exp and it's Easy to became first in team if you loose (a am below the 50% winrate but i slowly Advance cause the stars that i don't loose when i'm first)
