This submarine was spotted today about an hour from where I live (not my photo). Can anyone tell me what type of submarine this is? It certainly looks like some kind of missile sub.

Missile Ohios have fin tower more in the middle and with diving plane 'wings' on it. Los Angeles has smaller fin and less curvy in the front. Seawolf is too rare and a little bit smaller. It leaves Virginia.

Yup, but the size and shape looks like US hunter. The only other option i could think about is Vanguard, but their fin have a little bit different shape, i think.

And they don't have to be at american coast for sure :P

I just see people sorting through all the american submarine classes they know without considering it to possibly be from somewhere else

because freedom!

Well, there have been sightings of Virginia-class subs in that area before, so that might be a good guess. I just thought it looked bigger in that picture...

@txtspeak So tell me how many other submarines with this size (comparing to the buildings on the island if perspective is not completly bad) and with high narrow fin in the front you can find in fleets other than USN? ;)
On the contrary if you see something so big and with wide fin in the middle, it's typically Russian ;)

@Dorsen: can you tell where was it?
I was thinking now that it could be Ohio rebuild for cruise missiles, but they still have 'wings' if i remember correctly.

If you just go by categories like: total size, and placement/shape of the fin, there is not really any other option than an US nuclear sub.

Edit: crap, too slow.

Just about here: https://www.google.com/maps/@69.6025913,17.91744,12z . I was thinking about Ohio, but from other images I've looked at, the shape of the conning tower is different.

Freedom is coming for you Norway!

Quick hide the oil

Joking aside US subs poking in and around the Barents Sea is a 60 year old tradition by now. Murmansk Oblast is just around the corner and that region houses the bases of the Russian Northern Fleet.

If we tried hiding the oil, freedom would definately come for us! "Freedom" is the modern boogeyman :D.

Yeah, the US submarine fleet has its second home in the Barents sea.

Given the Admiral Kuznetsov, escorted by the Pyotr Veliky (Peter the Great) battlecruiser, the Vice Admiral Kulakov destroyer, Severomorsk destroyers and several supply ships is passing around Norway before possibly heading down the English chanel, I'd guess the Americans will have a sub or 2 in the area.

I have no sub spotting experience, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

The question you have to ask is, is he coming to defect?
