The original web novel (which was later adapted into an LN) is still active and a lot further along (I believe the anime is up to volume 10). Most recent chapter was released less than two months ago.

The anime is following the Light Novel, not the Web Novel.

And the anime is only at volume 5 or 6 if I remember correctly. Translation stopped of the LN because of it being licensed, but the LN is still running and there are more than enough material for a season 3.

 

Anyway, it's not really the topic to discuss that, and if you want some LN recommendation I'd be happy to give you some. x)

Just checked my own translated volume.

I have up to volume 7 of the Light Novel (the translation stopped here). Season 2 covered the appearance of Vanir, and the visit to Aqua "holy" (?) city. Which are volume 3 and 4.

Volume 5 is a visit to Megumin hometown and you better brace yourself.

Volume 6 is the appearance of a new girl and I won't spoil.

 

So two seasons of the anime actually covered volume 1 to 4, and even skipped some parts of them.

Yeah, I wonder is Issac got his arm back. Log Horizon and SAO(put aside the harem aspect) covers the subject of humanity and morality on beyond the world, I seriously like this theme, I wish they are completed by now.

Even only for the animation, it's a must watch for me, it's just shows the best of what current japanese animation can do. Fate/Zero was already awesome in 2010, but Unlimited Blade Works in 2014/15 blew my mind.
