There are so many nice girls in the fleet who get totally ignored either because of their look or simply because they're more quiet and don't brag everytime they can. Zuikaku has far more love than she deserves especially considering her overall behaviour. Hence I'll keep calling her trash, because even if this is probably too strong, she too deserves some hate.

I totaly get why you don't like her, but at the same time as somebody who does like her; I respect your opinion, Ain't gonna try and Defend "My waifu" XD I mean its an opinion at the end of the day, why complain eah? I hate it when people get super worked up about this kinda thing, I mean at the end of the day our differing tastes and opinions is what makes us "us" you know?  And I know what you mean by the whole ships get ignored, one of my favourite shipgirls  is Mogami, who as you probably notice, gets picked on alot for her tomboyish appearance, Wheres I can also relate to your hate for Zuikaku in that I absolutely hate Akebono and for the life of me will never get why people like her. Also, pretty cool rant, beginning to sound like me when somebody brings up politics! (Edit I forgot, you said something about her appearance, Twin Tails My man twin tails!)

For battle, you need these ships:

• Isuzu. She has both an AA cut-in, and she's one of the best ASW ships in the game. I'd recommend giving her an extra equipment slot, since she can use that with a machinegun for her AA cut-in. (Yura and Kinu in their kai ni versions also have decent cut-ins.)
• Maya is another, since her AA cut-in is top class. Sometimes you still need a heavy fleet and can't just use an AA DD.
• Speaking of AA DDs, the duckies (all Akizuki class DDs) are great for that.
• Satsuki is basically the DD version of Isuzu. Great AA and ASW. She's also capable of equipping daihatsus.
• Abukuma and Yura. They can equip Kouhyoutekis, without being classed as CLTs. Very valuable, to the point of being broken.
• Yuubari and Ooyodo. Sometimes the CTs can sub in, sometimes not. Four equipment slots is extremely useful on occasion. Ooyodo is by far the best CL to reach sufficient LoS. They are very good at ASW since equipment matters far more than base stat. Just get at least 100 if you can, though, since OASW triggers then.
• Always get the special type ships if you can, especially Akashi. Most of them are needed one time or another. Seaplane tenders (AV) are also included here, although there are a few, and Chitose-class is relatively easy to get. Remodel them to CVLs only if you have other AVs (or if you go for the duplicate route).
• You should keep almost any ship that isn't a DD, CL, CA, or SS. There are "best in class" considerations and stuff, but it's really just better to go with the ships you like. There are roles to fill, but there are several options for them.
  • Daihatsu and tank carriers. Very useful for transport fleets and land bosses.
  • All CLTs. Awesome night firepower, and capable of equipping Kouhyoutekis.
  • CAVs and BBVs. They're rare, occasionally needed, and almost always useful, so keep all.
  • High luck ships (DDs, CLs, and CAs). While you can boost luck, it's easier to get those with a high base luck. Kitakami is a great choice for boosting luck, as she has decent base luck, and the strongest night attack in the game.
  • AA DDs, if you don't have the duckies.

For equipment, there are a bunch of ships you probably want. It's probably easier to just look up the wiki for that, under "Equipment currently not craftable". A few special cases, though:

• Akitsumaru stands out with a lot of unique equipment.
• Four Kouhyouteki. I think you can build them, but it's more reliable to get them from Chitose-class. Always use them if possible.
• Sendai has night equipment, and you can supplement that with Skilled Lookouts.
• Akashi bears mention again. She's the only one with the cranes only she can use, and you want four, which means one duplicate Akashi.
• 10cm HA mounts + AAFD you want as many of as possible. These are among the best items to craft through Akashi's Improvement Arsenal, even if you have to start at the Type 91 AAFD.
• At least one AAFD secondary gun. Maya would like that one.
• At least one CDMM (AA machine gun). Maya comes with one, but I like the 40mm Bofors, which is as good here as in WoWs as in real life.

Everything else is optional. You don't need great ships like Yuudachi, Choukai, Shoukaku, or Yamato, but they sure help.

Yeah, that's my one gripe with her as well. Her original design is okay, but the drawing style is not interesting. Her kai ni design is great. She's also great fun in many doujins, especially with KTKM nearby.

It's really funny, basically you hate on her because you think she's overrated.

But calling her personality trash because she is more selfish than other... how would you Kaga ? And she's far from being the only one saying "It's normal I got the MVP".

By the way I really like Yamashiro for that "trash" personality. Her line are hilarious. Especially the Valentine one. That "Hai, kore" get me everytime.

On another note, saying that "quiet personality are underrated" is totally false too, y'know. Shigure is very popular for example. And she's way better than some "perfect waifu" like Shoukaku and Haruna.

I respect your opinion and in large part agree. Many girls are ignored without people even sparing them a second glace. One of the reasons why I like the fubuki class. They may all long very bland and the potato style ain't the best, but they are still fine girls. Only thing that really prevents me from using them that much is the sub par stats due to no Kai Ni.

 

Then again, this reason also extends to real ships for me. There is a reason I generally despise battleships, especially Yamato (not the kancolle version, the IRL version). I think it is too overhyped and not even that pretty. Looks too empty on the deck in my opinion and fat. Same reason why I dislike the other big BB like Montana and so on. I also think that these damn ships overshadow way too many other fine ships, either cruisers or DD, just because they are not the "biggest". Generally a reason I hate ships like Hood, Bismarck, Yamato and so on. Same with Enterprise and Akagi and all that (allthough I love the design of US CV like Yorktown class, Essec class and so on). I just can't help get a sour taste in my mouth when seeing people canstantly talking about those ships. I just keep thinking, there are SOO many great ships out there, if you are just willing to overlook the hype and "legends".

 

So I can understand your opinion of KC characters.

 

Now with that said, how many people actually care about the characters personalities? I mean, how many even check out their lines or play with sound anyway? I basicly play with other stuff in the background.

Not to mention I have probably gotten way more invested in the fan interpretations of their personalities (and thus basicly abandoned the game version ones) as I feel they are more fleshed out. Considering they are not limited to a few ingame lines, it makes sense.

 

Edit: Agree with Shin. Some of the girls who are nice with quiet personalities are mostly the famous ones. Like shigure or U-511. Hell it's seems the ones that get attention are the ones that are "not" just acting normal, but as in either very nice and quiet/shy personalities, or the boisterous loud ones.

Funny. Shoukaku is one of my favourites, but I find Haruna plain bland.

 

With Shigure, I tend to like her (she is a Shiratsuyu, after all), but in doujins she's kind of grating with her perpetual survival guilt.

I care about that roughly as much as design. Which is most of it. Actual performance is secondary. Most ships I started to like before I knew their stats.

Agree. Hell most people get a favourite based on design alone, as most people learn of the game through art rather than read the lines on the wiki.

Hell, one of the reasons why Kancolle became popular in the west back in the day, was art of the characters, and that was a serious lot of Shimakaze. Her rather "unique", let's just call it that, outfit drew a lot of attention.

Again, the more normal a character is, the less popular is most likely is.

Probably a lot to that. I think Shimakaze's overrated. Or maybe just overdone. She's not bad, but not good to the point of all attention.

 

Some ships are great only because of their voices, like Yamagumo. Her design isn't very special, but she's one of the funniest characters. Nagananami has a unique design with her hair, but I really like her voice as well. It's surprisingly deep, and the right amount of force to it. Uzuki is one who probably should be annoying, but I rather like her voice. She's one of my expedition main flagships, so I hear her a lot. Speaking of that, the flagships of the expeditions are where I put the girls with the best voices, just because you'll hear them a lot.

Yeah i ran into this problem when searching for model kits (1/350 scale plastic models) There seem to be an infinite number of  yamatos, bismarcks, and british battleships to choose from, but not a single shiratsuyu class, akizuki class or fubuki class. And dont get me started on the lack of CAs/CLs .

The only IJN destroyers i could get a hold of are shimakaze and Yukikaze. Nobody seems to care about the smaller ships

I don't only hate her because she's overrated. She also genuinly pisses me off. Also, I never said "quiet characters are all impopular", I just said there are plenty of character who deserve love and get ignored, and that quiet was one of the personality type that didn't get as much love. But there are a lot of quiet characters who do receive love and plenty of noisy ones who don't.

You're not Shinou so I should provide you with a proper response buuuut...

Er, I do dislike Yamato/Hood and stuff like that, but for a different reason - and I don't think much of Yamato in kancolle, in fact, she's one of the rare decent-looking BBs for my tastes. The thing is I also judge mostly from realk ship and history rather than kancolle first which is why sometimes my love or hate for a certain ship may not come from her kancolle incarnation but from the ship itself (good example would be Akizuki, a ship that I love IRL but in kancolle not so much (Shimakaze works too) ; reverse could be Sendai, cause I really like her in kancolle but IRL I don't really care about her much).

 

Then again you do raise a good point - people probably don't care that much about personality or when they do they mostly remember only the fan-enhanced stuff.
