The german language is more complex than that. It depends on how you talk about the ship and what kind of class of ship you are talking about, it can either be masculine, feminim or neutral gender.

Also, I do believe that there were several sailors who referred to her as female (like pretty much any nation) and some who referred to who as it or he.

Not that unusual really.

I am german and I've never heard anyone talking about a ship as "he" or "it" :amazed:

I recenty discovered there is another shipgirl game called Azure lane. It's Chineese again, but this time the combat is different. Not all RNG based. You actually control your fleet in a sort of sidescroll shooting manner.

The game itself have a lot of menus and ship names in english and having ships of other nations + is no more than a month old.

Yeah, but what makes KC so interesting is how they actually manage to define a personality for the shipgirls with a couple of lines, a good voice acting and a couple of CG.

That and all the historical references.

Wait a minute! Isn't Bismarck a male ship? So does the Eugen(Prinz=Prince)?

When you look up Bismarck and find the text in german, it says "Die Bismarck"  which is talking about her in a She form.

(i said She form, becasue i dont know how to translate "hun kjønn" without making it sound wierd)

edit: i see it was already covered, but i just had to ;)

In Italian is different and more complicated. We have like other language article like La (for female) and Il (for Male) but here the problem: sometime we say "La Roma" (so female) Becouse we want to say "La corazzata Roma" (the Battleship Roma) that is correct becouse "corazzata" end with letter A so is female.

But here the problem: in the Navy thay say that all the Military ship are Male and the commercial Ship are Female. Example: "La Andrea Doria" if we want to talk about the transatlantic and "Il Andrea Doria" if we want to talk about the Missile Destroyer, same name but different article.

So normal people use Female article most of the time only the navy use the masculine for military vessel.

So for the Bismarck we can say both "la bismarck" or "Il Bismarck"

well I'll just slap in here that Polish is kinda weird on this matter - there is no unified convention of refering to ships at all, with the word for "warship" being actually a male word, with some ocasions of ship bearing more femaleish sounding name.....

which leads to a situations where in single text block about - lets say destroyer błyskawica said ship can be refered multiple times and each time in different form by just alternating between refering to it as a warship and refering her by a name

and then you get a yamato movie translation to polish and you hear translated line referign to yamato as "he" and you just cringe xD

The yamato as He is just terrible. for example when i say Yamato in italian i use the female adjective (La yamato) and not the male one becouse sound better but according to the navy you should say as male sooo [edited]off I use the female.

As far as I know her captain and some propaganda officers referred to the Bismarck as "he", because they thought she was to mighty to be a female ship

Most of the sailors still called her "Die Bismarck" because thats the tradition.

That deffinetly does not surprise me, considering how much the nazis were all about traditional gender roles with the womans role being in the home taking care of the kitchen and the children.

Then again, I doubt there really is a rule in any language on wether ships are are to be considered male or female, and it seems to mostly be up to individuals.

Certainly most people seem to think of them as female. Who even knows where it started.

Anyway, here have some beautifull smiles.

YPAAAAAA

I really like her design, she looks badass and she has quickly become one of my fav BBs, unlike the actual ship which just looks derpy.

I do like that artist, but you appear to have a weird definition of the words "beautiful smile". These are beautiful smiles.

Read something along the lines of sailors (back then typically male) naming their ships after their wives/mothers/goddesses/etc. in ancient times, thus instilling the notion that ships are female.

Anyway, here have some beautifull smiles.

Seen these fan drawings awhile back:

On the more technical side, I've read that Taihou Kai is based on the G15 design, essentially making her Haku.

I like that Shigure.

This girl is so nice she might actually be a yandere. :3

My new favourite is Haguro btw. You got that urge to protect her. :3

As for Gangut, I see her as a grown-up Hibiki in a way.^^

Admiral Chester W. Nimitz said this about the subject once:

A ship is always referred to as 'she' because it costs so much to keep one in paint and powder.

I was never a big fan of Yugumos, but reading things about NuiNui I've found out about her and Hayashimo's final moments. And now I have a new favourite pair of shipgirls.

'You don't have to watch anymore'

Damn, how misinterpreted is Hayashimo. Taking her lament about powerlessly watching the death of Shiranui (and Fujinami) trying to help her, as stalking tendencies... fandom pls.

Too bad I've found only a few pieces about their relationship.

It's been a while since I've done one of this, but in celebration of my most recent improvement in my Hindenburg's EU ratings I decided to make one of these of the best tier X cruiser (Edited, fight me!).

Hindenburg.jpg

From Pixiv:

Hindenburg, the best tier X cruiser Edited, fight me!) with magic HE and nuclear AP. It was hard to do this one, because she didn't really have a history. Seeing as how she's a good performer in all respects without any specialty, and so I made her seem quite studious with a more aggressive steak when it comes to destroyers and British cruisers thanks to her long range sonar.

Clothes design threw me off somehow so i never checked them before. They look... a little goofy (sorry). Checking them now after finding to like Haya i can see some of them are quite interesting characters, but still i don't think i'll find other sisters so likable as the ghostly one.

Mostly because the best characters for me are the sad/calm characters (psychopatic/yandere twists are welcome). Shigure and NuiNui best DDs ;)
