Is the game more/less "enjoyable" now compared to when you first started playing?

Hi all,

Do you think the game is as "enjoyable" right now vs when you first started playing?

I ask because I see a lot of negativity about the game in it's current state on the forum/reddit etc which made me think back to how it was when I first started playing.

I think I was lucky in that I joined in April so I got to see the game before the "Great CV Nerf of 2016" and the change in patch scheduling to a stream of new patches very soon after the previous one (6 weeks is it?). At the start I really enjoyed playing the game and at one point I was playing 20+ matches a day because I had fun and, while a few ships infuriated me (looking at you IJN/USN T3/4 BB's), I looked forward to trying new ships and seeing my skill set grow. I started on the IJN DD line after watching Phlydaily/BaronVon youtube vids and massively enjoyed the torpedo play style at T2-5, until WG nerfed them. Then I swapped to BB's which, to be fair, didn't suit my play style but I did like the T6/7 IJN/USN lines. However I rapidly moved over to CA's which, with the T5 Kirov and T6 Cleveland, was where I found my niche and I enjoyed the game even more as I found a ship class that matched my playstyle perfectly (Ru CA's to TX). As my skills grew I enjoyed the game more and more and I "rewarded" WG for their great game by buying a whole bunch of stuff.

Skip forward 6 months and am I still having fun and enjoying it? Not really. I mean I still have a rare few games which I enjoy but, overall, it's just not as enjoyable any more to play. Some days it's the potato teams, some days it's the ship nerfs and most days it's both, but I just struggle to find the enthusiasm to play right now

Since the CV nerf, the rapid patch updates feel more like urgent damage control to a problem WG have no idea how to solve sadly, rather than attempts to make the game more fun, with none of the many patches making the game more enjoyable for me, despite making the game "better" technically (improved UI/mods/armour viewer etc). Even the KM BB release, which was enjoyed by many, has done more damage to the "fun" element for me as a mainly CA player in the current 5-6 BB matches meta.

Now, none of my opinions mean that I think WoWs is a "bad" game, I don't think that at all, it's just that for me the specific changes made constantly to the game mean I just don't find the game as fun and enjoyable as I did at the start. It's got to the point where I've pretty much stopped playing anywhere near as much as I used to. I think I'm down to a game a day at best and had to force myself to finish the Campbeltown mission this week before the month ended (still can't find the willpower to finish the ARP T7 CA mission though) and I don't leave the game feeling happy or even glad that I played 90% of the time, just frustrated which is a huge disappointment considering my enjoyment at the start..

I'm really genuinely hoping that the release of the RN CL line makes the game more enjoyable again, I really do, as I want to enjoy the game again and it'd be a massive shame to walk away after putting so much time in.

I realise this is just one long grumpy post and I know there will be happy people who still love the game (fantastic for them, I wish I could be like you) but I can't be the only person to think the game feels like it has lost it's way in the past 6 months, seemingly leaving only a single class still worth playing having avoided every gameplay "nerf" in 6 months (the only class to do so).

I've played on and off since the dawn of open beta. Always enjoyed the game but now nearing 2k battles I started seeing it's flaws.

That being said, the latest patch is like a revelation. I finally get an actual reward for the playstyle I've adopted from the beginning. In credits or XP it might not be much but the idea behind this means the world to me.

Also I've always had this weird fetish for machinery and engineering but I never realized I liked warships so much.

1. I do like the FPS improvements.

2. I don't like the new team-damage based systems... it's being abused more and more and more.

3. I don't like how ramming into island or teammates doesn't do any damage.

4. Cyclones are happening way too much, seems almost as a cyclone bug ?! Are there not any other weather types ? I do believe there are some but hard to spot ? Rain is cloud + rain drops ? Cyclone is ? hmm I forgot...

These weather icons hmmm they are not explained yet in the help screen... that should be added... so one can determine it's meaning and see how many there are.

(Haven't played yet with the new credit system... might spent my time on something else not sure yet... or just taking a break to prepare for ranked games... since ranked games are starting soon :) no point in playing random games now ;))

With the current patch, it is infinitely more fun now. More than ever, it's my no. 1 game at the moment.

When I started the game was quite hilariously unbalanced.

Battleships had +3MM so your new kawachii got put against Fuso's constantly.

Langleys loadout was 2 full sets of torp bombers and planes flew like UFO's. Regular on the forums were players who had bot like stats on all classes except CV where they did 100k+ in the Langley

DD smoke was massive and lasted ages. Having huge portions of the map covered wasn't uncommon. There was no radar or hydro.

Less enjoyable.

* Carriers aren't really that viable to play, unless you are super good at dropping DDs (I can count the number of people on EU pretty much on two hands that fit here) or like not being rewarded for what you do, while still getting trashtalked by people who have never even touched carriers.

* Aggressive destroyer play with smoke is a lot less common, because CBT -> OBT smoke nerf was huge. Planes above a DD still hasn't been fixed either

* Battleships are more fun, since there's more variety with some battleships having torpedoes, some being fast, some being accurate, some having secondaries etc.

* Cruisers are a mixed bag - some are better, some are worse. 155mm HE nerf meant that quite a few cruisers that were amazing before suddenly fell into "really poor" territory.

People have become better at the game. This meant that more of the flaws of the game are visible.

Cruisers pretty much have to sit at long range, otherwise battleships will just RNG them away, and it's completely up to luck whether it happens or not. This isn't fun.

Carriers often have to strike DDs instead of BBs because BB AA is so strong, and the often hang back in groups meaning that dropping on them is difficult. This isn't really fun. Striking a DD is inconsistent and you only get 4-5 strikes per game.

Battleships pretty much have to sit at long range, otherwise the long range HE spamming cruisers will just burn them down.

Destroyers can do things, but they have to be a lot more careful nowadays since smoke isn't quite as much of a one-click wonder as it used to be. Torpedoes are also not what they used to be.

So my overall verdict is that I liked some aspects of the game from back in the day way more. If people just knew how to play better back then and matchmaking rules weren't as lax then I believe that quite a few changes wouldn't have been made. The good thing is that there's less standard battle I guess.

EDIT: I would like to add that I do believe the game has been improved a lot, but some aspects of the game just weren't as visible when people weren't as good at the game.

More enjoyable

- lots of improvements esp interface and maps

- more ships (that are worth playing aka fun)

- the improvements outweigh the screwups atm

Wow, I'm unbelievably glad I missed that as the Kawachi cost me a broken keyboard smashed in a fit of rage unbefitting a 40+yo man, mouse survived though so not all bad! :D

Love the game for all the issues and missteps of the last 12 months I think the game has come along well although saying that the game is the most unbalanced its been with WG having pretty much killed off Carriers and Cruisers and Destroyers becoming less common. My hope is that the German Battleships caused that because they where the first real line introduced in 10 months and once we have a couple more things will even out.

Less enjoyable, than it was in closed beta. Actual team game play is much worse. Its the me me me me WoT crowd.  Examples:

1. Lay a smoke screen for your ships to hide behind? They sail straight through, and get deleted.

2. Carriers, when you do see them play against other carriers mostly, spot DDs for the team? Nah look for the enemy fighters instead.

3. Then they nerf carriers, and in the middle to high tiers, they rarely play. An Atlanta or Yubari could have heaps of fun shooting down planes, now? What planes?

In CBT I experienced much higher levels of mutual support. An AA cruiser would assign itself to either a top tier BB or CV to protect it from air attack. Rarely see that now. In my opinion the game has been dumbed down far too much. There is very little in its mechanics that really rewards team play. Losing a game should be much more expensive in terms of XP awarded.

Even ranked battles have become a chore. If you watch a WoT championship game, its all the same bloody tanks vs the same bloody tanks. And that is what ranked battles have become. Make the first series of games tier 7 or 8, then make it tier 3 and 4. Even finish it at tier 1!!! Much more fun. Because the game play is faster at lower tiers.

And just to end my rant. Royal Navy. What mess will they create for you? Will a generation of numpties whose sole source of information is from youtubby and games come to believe in the superiority of all things Soviet?

I miss asking "do you want AA support?" and generally being useful in a CA. I was lucky enough to have started when this was still done and the teamwork was great. As an AA cruiser you actually had a role and there was actual "tactics" talked about i.e. If the BB hangs back outside my gun range I'd tell them I'm leaving them for a BB closer to the action and a lone BB without AA support was dead meat to a good CV so it forced the BB's to  push with the AA cruisers. When the BB's pushed, then CA's could get closer to the DD's to help support them. Once the BB's were immune to most CV attacks all that fell apart as BB's could do whatever they wanted without help.

CV's were the ultimate "anti-camper BB" deterrent before the nerf, although the damage they dealt per attack was far too strong to be fair but I really wish the CV nerf had just been a CV damage reduction rather than a global AA buff.

Enjoy it far less now than when I did in CBT. With the constant nerfs to classes, thanks in no small part to whiny BB players who found it hard to use the keyboard and mouse at the same time. Literally has become world of battleships now with a play style that involved clicking every 30 seconds (sounds familiar right). It's become too dumbed down and the emphasis of team work has gone. Used to enjoy escorting aggressive BB's, protecting them from aircraft and DD's. Or escorting DD's in my CL's to capture points. Boy I wish the game was like it was a year ago...

Now i just sunk things and the enjoy from playing.

Sometimes it gets boring really i dont get this "amazing" feel anymore.

I dont mean im dead bored but i would like to see new features.

More enjoyable.

I would like to see a balanced carrier meta and a usable user interface, but all other classes seem to be all right. I think the BB spam is only due to the german BB line, as soon as there will be another new line, the balance will be back on track.

The darkest hours of wows were the times when the Midway had 2 TB squads and could 1 shot even a Yamato in 1 run and had above 100k avarage server damage.

More enjoyable compared to a few weeks ago.

But I miss the times when almost everyone was a noob and you could wreck people left and right at all tiers.

Much, much less enjoyable. But it is MY FAULT AND NOT THE GAME.

The game has got better and better IMHO (but I never saw it in CBT as some posters did).

The novelty has worn off, and I have realised that my own lack of skills are proving an insurmountable stumbling block to further progress. (Yes, I watch loads of youtubers and read the forums, taking notes as I go - but I just don't have an aptitude for the game.) We can't all be unicums, though, and I enjoy many other things in "real life" so that's OK. :)

This is what I put in another recent thread on this subject: http://forum.worldofwarships.eu/index.php?/topic/63136-share-your-opinion-is-world-of-warship-now-unpleasant-to-you-too/

I am getting bored with it because of my own limitations.I need to feel competitive in order to enjoy the game, but I'm just an average player. (Well, average in Cruisers, but poor in Destroyers & Battleships). The only tier that I enjoy is tier 4, and even then it's just two ships (Phoenix & Kuma).

Tier 7+ is a huge struggle (175 games played). Tiers 5 + 6 have a couple of ships that I can make a useful contribution to the team - but the new matchmaking means that I am bottom tier way more than top tier. This is by design of course and there are GOOD REASONS FOR IT. I just can't cope with it, which is my fault. Tiers 1-3 are just chaos.

I keep playing because I love ships and I have spent so much money on the game and feel uneasy about "wasting" my investment by quitting. I did have a 10 week break in the summer, which helped rekindle a bit of enthusiasm for the game, but I seem to have lost it again.

Don't get too dismayed, despite it's name a learning curve isn't really a curve but rather a succession of steps. We all reach points where our skill level seems to hit a plateau and we can stay there for quite a while until something "clicks" and sparks off the next learning step.

More enjoyable since I first played in closed beta. All that talk of mutual support in the days of Beta is crap.

This game is great and I thank Wargaming for producing it at the cost of $10 a month (monthly premium) which makes it super cheap compared to most online games these days.

So you're saying I didn't offer AA support to BB's, that no BB accepted, that we therefore didn't work together as a team and that this wasn't a common occurrence for me?

I, obviously, can only speak for myself but from April to Late May/early June it was noticeable in almost all my matches, especially in my Cleveland & Kutuzov.
