Toxic ingame chat

So

I've been playing for more than 1500 games now, got my Yamato, learned what to do and not to do and tried playing well. But the chat has just gotten more and more abusive over time. I almost feel the need to run a chat hiding mod just to avoid getting annoyed and angry by other people venting their frustrations by accusing others of camping, laziness, lacking ability and so on.

Of course you start doubting your own abilities sometimes, In one situation i'm accused of being a camper for defending the base in a bb in standard mode, if it was domination that would make more sense. I play primarily BB's, so i'm aware of the "camping max range bb" frustrations of other players, and the balance is hard to strike sometimes.

  • If you go in ahead of your team you get targeted and shot to pieces in the first minute
  • if you stay behind the team you're a camper
  • if you go with the team and make sure to keep the same tempo, then you're in a lemming train of noobs

I got so frustrated the last game at someone being an insufferable whiner at the game not going his way. When the usual angry accusations and insults started flying and some landed on me, then it just became a chat flamewar, I'm to easily riled up and have a hard time to just ignore them. What advice have you others got for situations like these?, besides trying even harder to ignore  them.

I don't want to blanket-ignore all criticism done in an angry tone, then i might miss lessons or learn more meta-game, etc.

You can right click another person in the game chat and select ignore (or mute, not sure what they call it). If someone is upsetting you just use the ignore/mute feature in chat and it's problem solved right there.

Oh right!. I'd forgotten that, That helps a lot when it's someone going on and on. It's a shame that you have to get annoyed to the point where that is a neccessary step to avoid further aggrevation.

If people turn muppets, report Misbehaviour in chat and let WG sort them out. Then block/mute.

if you go with the team and make sure to keep the same tempo, then you're in a lemming train of noobs

If lemming trains begins you should join it - you would very seldom do some good battles alone.

And the problem is that you are not the good player. In terms of winratio (48%) you are below average player. In terms of dmg too.

So you should learn more and not complain that someone complain on you.

I would suggest to watch some iChase "how to shot" videos - https://www.youtube.com/user/ichasegaming

The other thing is to survive. If you die quickly you won't help your team. Try to coop with other players.

Are you seriously arguing that just because someone is not an above average skilled player she or he has no right to complain about game mechanics - let alone the ingame chat, which has nothing whatsoever to do with skill? =)

Thank you for the suggestion, Haven't seen that channel, always eager to learn more.

I've been trying to use the dynamic crosshair, to count how many lines they cross per second, then adjust according to shell travel time, successrates vary..

Surviving is hard with a Brawler build yamato.. it's like a neon sign saying "kill me".

As i said, i'm not upset at getting complaints in general. Sometimes they are with a very angry tone, and 75% is just blaming someone, but it makes it hard to listen to the 25% that is legit criticism. If someone gives me useful advice, while calling my mother things, i'm likely to ignore the advice.

Playing BB is about killing and doing dmg.

If you take Yamato and just make 50-60k dmg you might be described as a average cruiser. And you play BB.

I like very much that you want to be better.

When I played 1000 battles I do know nothing. After 2000 there was improvment. After 3000 I could name myself "average".

Now - the learning process in progress ;)

When sailing in Yamato, Montana or sailing the Top Tier BB in general, i usually don't wait to see where my team is going and then join them.

When on a domination map, i announce: "going to cap A, support would be nice", i usually get enough support - sometimes more than i need - and despite my best efforts the Lemming Train starts.

Folks usually follow the "top dog" and stay and fight when you stay and fight.

Saltyness in chat can be pretty annoying, as i noticed in a game recently (post somewhere on this board, heavily edited by BBV).

Despite that, disabling the chat isn't the best idea as you could miss possibly a vital information.

I considered muting, but unless the person starts actually spamming the chat with meaningless drivel or has a sudden attack of F-key tourette, i leave them on.

You are the captain on your own ship, so fight as you please.

Fionia

Yes but i emphasize word "fight". At the start of battle when i see team mate running away, I get annoyed with that and i must call out that player. I fight for XP, winning makes me happy.

Which is fine, depending on your definition of "call out that player" or "toxic chat"

WG have a duty of care\responsibility to ensure that appropriate controls\systems are in place to protect younger players from unacceptable chat.  To do this they offer the ability to turn off chat completely or to report players who "misbehave in chat" - which will then result in a chat ban.  Given that the last 2 monthly questionnaires from WG have queried players' attitudes to chat it's clearly something that is on their radar at the moment.

And I can see why.  I was at Chatham at the weekend, happily playing HMS Belfast, whilst Tuccy himself was next to me, showing a mother of two young boys how the game worked.  Luckily, the two boys were not in the same game as me because someone was completely losing it in chat, swearing and much, much worse.

Turning off chat isn't really an option for those of us who want to play what is supposed to be a team game and I'm really not sure how effective chat bans are, if at all, given that enough people in that battle have to car enough to all report the same player (assuming they even have reports).  At a minimum, I don't see why we cannot have a chat filter for common offensive terms and their derivatives...

When I see a thread like this I always wonder what I am doing 'wrong' in the game not to get such stuff (almost 5 years in WOT and 18 months or so with WoWs) - only 1 message stream that raised my eyebrows (I had done something extremely silly in game though so some sort of comment was deserved).

This is a game, right? Unless you have no life next to WoWs, there's no reason to get toxic about a game. Even more because often the toxic chatters are the ones destroyed early in game, and then insult their team for not giving support. When it's too late to change anything.

I lose my temper from time to time as well. But I've learned some manners and there's no reason to insulting or swearing at all. It won't help your team win.

I admit, I can lose my cool at times. I'm no pro, but I am consistently one of the top-6 players in my team so I at the very least pull my own weight. Because of this, players that are doing their level best to not get involved in the fight can get under my skin.

If you are in a BB and 10-minutes in to battle you are still full HP I will call you out on it. If we are down 2/3 caps and you are in a DD, I will ask you what you are doing. All I expect of my fellow players is to at least try and use their ships in a productive manner and play to the objectives, because that is what I am doing.

Dont care about a lot of ppl who write in chat a lot of nonsenses

Chat is toxic because a lot of noobs speak without know game

You have to read chat and others opinions and then, USING YOUR BRAIN and your experience, evaluate if they are right or wrong.

A lot of ppl gives right advices...others not.

for example:

1 - Going ahead is not wrong using a DD or a Criuiser...but remember to stay enough near main group to be helped if necessary. And remember to turn back if you encounter huge enemy group. Running ahead alone and too far is a suicide way of play.

2 - Stay behind can be useful if you need to protect a carrier....or close behind to defend main fleet (in this case using a DD or a Cruiser).

3 - WOWS is not WOT and lemming train in WOWS usually make your squad win. NEVER run alone with BBS....NEVER!...Better a lemming train than a spread team!
