[FAITH] vikingw Alpha Tester 38 posts Report post #1 Posted September 12, 2016 Just wondering if it's me or is the Gneisenau really underpowered compared to tier 6 and up? I know it's a question about gameplay, but the stats and facts taken into account I still ask the same Right now it seem like a very long grind to Bismarck... too long perhaps
[CR33D] Runner357 Players 542 posts 18,076 battles Report post #2 Posted September 12, 2016 I struggled with her. On paper she has very powerful guns, nice speed and torps - in reality she can't hit the broad side of a barn at point blank range. RNG made ever screwed me over at point blank range with her firing at broadside targets. However, some seem to be able to get her to do her job

[-OOF-] ollonborre Beta Tester 2,598 posts 12,758 battles Report post #5 Posted September 12, 2016 I did not get along with the Gneisenau. The ship itself is good, fast, good AA, nice secondaries, torpedoes and ofcourse turleback. But the guns... 6 guns with really horrible dispersion, I don't care if they are not that inaccurate on paper, my experince with them is that regardless of range the guns are extremely temperemental. And even if you do hit it seems completely random if you penetrate, bounce or overpen. The final straw was when I fired 3 salvoes at a broadside Chapyaev(?) at ~10 km. 2(!) shots in total hit and one was a bounce and one was an overpen. I admit that it was probably all the bad RNG one could have in a day concentrated into one game, but that really killed it for me.

[DAMNO] Seinta Beta Tester 857 posts 12,319 battles Report post #7 Posted September 12, 2016 You have amazing armor and torpedoes, get in close and personal and you will hit your targets, unless RNG trolls you super hard. So far, a very fun ship to play.

Myrmix Players 949 posts 4,642 battles Report post #10 Posted September 12, 2016 I tried that sweetspot thing a lot. A bit too much, actually. I tend to play very aggressive (even in ijn BBs) and so I was happy to get a ship like Gneisenau..fast, beautiful, torps, what could be better? Well, the guns. I can't hit anything with them. I miss battleship-broadsides at 4km. you can't do damage to cruisers, because you have german all-or-nothing ap...so either bounces and overpens or only overpens on broadsides. try to aim at the water, to get underwater-cits? everything splashes around and somehow you even manage to hit the superstructure. I'm talking about fights at <7km here. Above 10km I don't even dream about hitting anything. Once I shot at 17km at a Gneisenau. I managed to overshoot the Scharnhorst, sailing behind it. I don't know what they did to the sigma-value, but the vertical dispersion is a nightmare. I cheer when I get a simple penetration with those 6 guns of derp. Side note: RNG hates me since the day I installed the game...so maybe that's the cause.
albinbino Players 662 posts 11,080 battles Report post #11 Posted September 12, 2016 Gneisenau is extremely powerful ship, i think i played over 100 games with it so far and average damage is higher then what i am making in Amagi, NC and Izumo. It is not underpowered, not even close to it. In my case it is even OP.

Also has epic AA protection. Torps.. Armor.. A fool would say it s a bad ship. Enjoy your 21 knt Colorado and Paper Nagato Edited September 12, 2016 by Vaspurakanian

Zogash85 Beta Tester 516 posts 4,160 battles Report post #17 Posted September 12, 2016 This ship is awesome. Correction: this ship can be awesome - I've had multiple ~150k damage games in her. Want a ship that can oneshot cruisers like there's no tomorrow and tank and dish out like a boss in 1v1 close combat? Gneisenau it is! But she can also be terrible if RNGsus decides its time for an unlubricated rectal exam. Want a Tier 7 BB that can straddle a broadsiding Nagato at 8km with three entire consequtive salvoes, all the while burning from stem to stern because 'getting close' means everyone and their mums can spam HE at you? Gneisenau it is! She is more capricious than the entire Greek pantheon combined, and I was glad when I finally got the Bismarck unlocked. Now that ship is consistent and awesome. I still keep her in port for historicity's sake (and because I refuse to write her off as unmanagable), but I don't feel the need to play her as regularly as I would have liked before I experienced her... [RATM] Tick0r Alpha Tester 24 posts 13,011 battles Report post #23 Posted September 13, 2016 I am playing it, no free XP used, and I do enjoy it. Agree with what everyone says on here, get in close to cause damage, but you are then at the mercy of HE spamming everything else and the DD's torping you. I still haven't got the engage quickly and disengage quite right yet, I have the " I am a BB and am therefore slow" mentality, or I am driving along thinking I am a slow BB when in fact I had zoomed ahead of team mates and put my self in a world of hurt. It's all good fun though!
[EXCEL] GuzLightyear Alpha Tester 61 posts 9,255 battles Report post #24 Posted September 13, 2016 The gneisenau was one of the most fun ships of the line. It's like a tier 7 tirpitz with even more (yes, more!) armor. You only need to get close. Long-range, due to the low barrel count and high dispersion, your damage output will SUCK. You need to get close.
