Sometimes you miss at point blank, sometimes you hit 4 citadels on a angled NC 17km away. RNGesus giveth and RNGesus taketh away.

Yup had one of those yesterday. Triple citadel on Fuso a good range away and triple citadel on Dunkerque on medium range the next volley.unknown.png

How I ended the game. Yet most games I struggle to get close to 100k due to the dispersion.

Still tho I find the best thing about this ship by far is the armor. I can consistently get 2-4 mill of potential damage. With this I find Roma to be one of the best BBs to uptier in actually.

Welp! Even GK has those moments (not mine btw) when I saw stock consumables :Smile_facepalm: However had those moments when even all 12 shots missed an Ibuki from like 8-10 km. So if I can tolerate GK I can surely do Roma.

Why everybody got their panties in a twist over this ship?

Played correctly its the BY FAR most tanky tier 8 BB without trading any concealment or maneuverability for it.

Ofc gun dispersion suffers, but in general I found the guns to perform really well, super short time to target, high pen and turret traverse makes for a suprisingly comfy gun to shoot. As long as you dont let the occasional bad dispersion go to your head youll realize dispersion really aint as bad as you make it seem.

AA is somewhat bad, but is balanced by a torpedobelt that will help you out a lot.

Roma is excellent in Random Battles.

Decent armour pattern when angled as others have mentioned but it's the guns that cause so much controversy.

These 15" guns have extreme velocity and have penetration characteristics that are on par with Yam's guns and are arguably better in some situations. Citadel strikes vs angled higher tier BB are not uncommon. It's just they can derp you extremely hard sometimes.

I dont find Roma guns to be more reliable than Bismarcks though. Like in every way except dispersion the guns are awesome. Compared to Bismarck where everything except from RoF is awesome.

Not to mention just how many other strengths Roma has over that ship.

She works fine. By far the best tier 8 BB to play in tier 10 in my opinion.

Is it worth to train preventive maintenance for the commander, will it helps to prevent turret losses noticeably?

I just feel the probability of damage for the main turrets too frequent to be comfortable...

For 1pt skills its only really direction centre and preventive maintenance that are worth getting. So got a point left over? Get both. If you only take one 1pt skill then its just a choice of preference.

Personally Id go direction centre. I dont use auxiliary armaments 1 on Roma as both secondaries and AA are garbage. So PM and Main Armaments mod 1 becomes overkill on a BB.

If http://proships.ru/stat/ships/ is right, then more like NC/Bama penetration.

Roma guns are unexpectedly punchy for 15", they get citadels and heavy penetrations when you feel they really shouldn't.

No idea if that's just RNG or the high velocity shells.

It's because they've got the penetrating power akin to some of the best 16" guns guns in the game, but yet the lack the overmatch factor, which can make their power deceptive (although there's not a huge world of difference between what they can and can't overmatch).

The other aspect is the poor vertical dispersion.

The horizontal dispersion is on the 'German' curve (essentially the Euro curve as both French and Italian BBs are also on it), so it's just as bad as the German BBs - which is fine, easily workable.

What her big dispersion issue is, is her vertical dispersion, a product of just how well her guns retain their energy - low drag, heavy shell for caliber, high velocity - that gives you much greater vertical dispersion. For an opposite, the American 16"/45 Mk.6 has great vertical dispersion because it's much lower velocity and falls at a much steeper angle at the same ranges.

This makes her gun power deceptive because it tends to make her shells fall short or fly high of where you aim them - so a shot at an enemy belt can land short (you get nothing) or fly into the superstructure (overpen), which really takes away from the power of these guns... They overpen everything easily that isn't heavy armor.

But that's because the AP is only meant for use against BBs. The more general-purpose AP WG decided to turn into HE (and spoiler alert, AP makes really bad HE), so you have no real anti-cruiser/DD ammo.

Imo, though, the biggest weakness of Roma in the game is the combo of weak AA and weak deck armor over her machinery (45mm + 112mm) I've got no idea why WG decided to make the 90mm guns only have 4 km range when other, objectively much inferior weapons, have 5 km range... But that means you really can't blunt any same or higher tier CV strikes. Against torpedo-boats it's fine - you can maneuver, and you've got great TDS.

Against AP dive-bombers?

You can't rely on your AA doing anything until they're right on top of you, and there's nothing you can do to dodge - so they just rip 50k off of you in one strike, and you can barely recover any of that health because it's citadel damage.

Getting hit like that, compared to any other damage I've ever taken in any other ship type, just feels so arbitrary and impossible to avoid, and it's un-fun as hell. Getting one-shot or so badly damaged you can't do anything effective for the rest of the game in the first 5 min from one attack? That's just ridiculous.

Bump.

Picked this ship up with the 25% coupon and a pile of dormant doubloons that weren't seeing any use for years now. Nice looking ship, and comfortable to sail. And those 15" guns are comfortable to aim... But that dispersion really needs looking at.
