It's a notable historic ship, an extremely tough battlecruiser and would probably be very competitive and fun to play?  These are good reasons for it to be included over Paper Designs.... but as it's not high tier, it's a long way down the priority list.

Sadly the other names of ships of that class are, how to say it, unfortunate:

-Lützow

-Hindenburg

Sadly, we haven't been very creative with names of ships...

But BTW I'd love to see battlecruisers, both British and German, from SMS Von der Tann and HMS Invincible in the game.

I had to google it to see if it was real or some joke I didn't get.. :Smile_hiding:

What's special about it?

You wat mate???

In case your google search didn’t bring it up:

Derfflinger - after retiring Lützow - led the attack of the Battlecruiser squadron against the whole Grand Fleet. This daring attack gave the High Seas Fleet the needed time to turn in another “Gefechtskehrtwende“ (which is a 180 degree turn) and probably saved the fleet.

This daring attack is commonly known as the „Battlecruisers‘ death ride“.

As the leading ship she got plenty of attention. Some bon-mot about her:

This stubbornness to keep on fighting even though completely outmatched, outclassed and outgunned caused the British to honour her by giving Derfflinger the nickname "Iron Dog". In all she was hit at least 21 times by large caliber rounds: 10x15", 1x13.5" and 10x12".

and she survived! :Smile_honoring:

And I hope they won't mess her up like they did the PEF :Smile_sceptic:

And she is a beautiful ship :fish_cute_2:

For papaer projects ok, have at it, for real ships, leavem as they were, screw the "balance" exuse.

Just wait for the IFHE nerf. Most premium midtier cruisers will be dead from this change.

Even more so if WG "fixes" MM so that T8 is toptier more often. GG WG? :cap_fainting:

maybe even french BC's as well, pretty memey bunch since they would of had quad turrets and quite big calibers for BC's

(i know they didn't exist but hey at least they got designs down and finalised, i wouldn't mind seeing a BC class).

Can they be balanced at T9 or T10?

I fully agree with all of you, but keep on dreaming guys, WG is not interested in those tiers. They barely acknowledge they exist nowadays :Smile_sad:

We can't have low/mid tier premiums, people would start playing those tiers. Can't have that, that would make glorious NTC obsolete :fish_palm:

No sh*it Sherlock they really continue this tier 6, 8, 10... holy cow that is a lazy and freaking bad idea.

@MrConway - you dudes forgot my Imperial U-19 sub :Smile_izmena:

In case there are no sekrit Archive Records: it’s The first Diesel sub class and it’s plain awesome

Tier 6,8,10 was a terrible idea for carriers and is a bad idea for subs as well

Its sad really, there is potential at those tiers, im sure hundreds of ideas were made for low tiers but yeah, WG is as blind as a potato unfortunatly. :Smile_sceptic:

Just give us battlecruisers, not submarines. Also... russian submarines? Really?

Sinking fishing boats... and  missing ships. Good resume.

Meanwhile we begin at Tier 6 and WW2, and unnatural speed. Also that means, SM U-21 is missing. 35.000 tons in warships, 80.000 tons in merchant vessels.

Including 2 battleships, 1 armored cruiser, 1 scoutcruiser, 1 Auxillary cruiser. The captain was called "Destroyer of warships" for a reason.

Well, it was a Russian sub that caused the greatest human loss in a single shipwreck ever.

I hope they'll add Dutch subs at some point. But one of the leading countries in submarine design, so I guess it will take a while.

Or no subs at all. I think I prefer that.

On this note, this seems as good a place as any to apologise in advance if anyone sees me making an idiot of myself in my brand new Helena over the next couple of weeks. I'd prefer to stick to T6 for longer, but want that grind done before the IFHE changes as much as possible. I promise I won't continue if it's going disastrously.

It's one of the ships I've been most looking forward to playing, with its history and sheer firepower, but hey ho I guess Cleveland has those too (I really will wait a while before starting to play her though).

A random thought which has just occurred to me, and which I'll be *interested* to see WG's eventual concept for: I wonder how mounting signals and flags will work on a submerged sub? :cap_tea:

Edit: has also just occurred to me that maybe I would know if I'd played the Halloween event. Oops. :Smile_hiding:

They won't, so you will be subjected to fun and engaging mechanics, while you also won't be able to powergrind your way through with stockpiled rare signals:Smile_coin:

And IIRC Halloween subs had no "external customization" tab, so no signals either

From wikipedia:

MV Wilhelm Gustloff was a German cruise ship converted into an armed hospital ship and which while functioning as a military transport ship was sunk on 30 January 1945 by Soviet submarine S-13 in the Baltic Sea while evacuating German civilians, German officials, refugees from Prussia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Estonia and Croatia[3] and military personnel from Gotenhafen (Gdynia) as the Red Army advanced. By one estimate,[4][5] 9,400 people died, which makes it the largest loss of life in a single ship sinking in history.

So... interesting tidbit from Gamescom, I'd say.

Spoiler

1*5K_3Z_bhpbjURNAzc4qWTQ.png

...

...If I were to take a guess, all of you guys will react with, "Who?" :Smile_amazed:

So, let's see who is the guy WG chose as the Italian legendary commander.

Sansonetti.jpg

Luigi Sansonetti (1888 - 1959) may not be well known, even to those who are interested in the naval war in the Mediterranean, however his figure is far from unimportant. Starting the war in 1940 as Ammiraglio di Divisione (Rear Admiral), he commanded the 7a Divisione (two Montecuccoli-type light cruisers), with which he participated in the Battle of Punta Stilo (off Calabria), before he was promoted to command the 3a Divisione (the two Trento-class and the Bolzano heavy cruisers), which he led in the unsuccessful search for Force H after Operation Grog (the bombardment of Genoa), the Battle of Cape Teulada and the Operazione Gaudo (which culminated in the tragic Matapan night). In July 1941 he replaced Inigo Campioni as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Regia Marina (basically its operative commander), improving communications between the high command and the admirals at sea. He fulfilled this role for two years, organizing the Regia Marina's continuous campaign to keep the supply lines to North Africa open and the opposition to similar British efforts (Vincent O'Hara praises its organization skills in the contrast to Operations Vigorous and Harpoon). When the Italian Armistice was made public on 8 September 1943, he remained in Rome when the Chief of Staff (Admiral Raffaele de Courten) followed the King and the government south, continuing to issue orders to ships and commands; after Rome was captured by German forces, he ordered his officers to cease activities, and went to Southern Italy on foot to resume his duties there. In April 1944 he took the role of President of the Consiglio Superiore della Marina, which he kept till 1951.

...So, that being said...

While this is not quite the "fighting admiral" (like Alberto Da Zara, Inigo Campioni or Carlo Bergamini) I thought the Italians might get, it's still quite an interesting figure, an interesting blend of a sea-dog (as far as I know, his commands at sea weren't particularly glorious, but neither were they censurable) and a first-rate organizer (while much criticism has been levelled at Supermarina, the RM's operational command in wartime, after improvements it didn't work too badly).

I would like to add a further anedocte about him. After the destruction of the Duisburg convoy, the Kriegsmarine liaison to the RM command (admiral Eberhard Weichold) went to Sansonetti and criticized how the Italians went about doing their things. His criticism was on point and correct. Sansonetti told him that he was ready to immediately implement any and all suggestion and advice Weichold could give him, if based on the current availability of forces and resources. Strangely, Weichold at this point wasn't able to say anything constructive...
