I hope it works and is extended through the game. Lots of navel battles, and I'm thinking WW2 pacific theatre, were supporting or defending island assaults

May have to give this a go, i noticed both forts and surveillance stations were in cap circles, it didn't look as though destroying a fort will cap, will the surveillance stations help with spotting i wonder?

Gotta admit, I don't know if it's just my horrendous aim talking but I can't seem to hit any of the ground targets, I always seem to hit a bit too low or I can't actually tell what i'm supposed to be aiming at

No, you have to cap to cap. And when you cap you gain the fort and surveillance station and they will fight for you.

The surveillance station is still unknown to me to a great extent, but based on some circles on the map they might detect ships in a very wide circle... might. They certainly can't see through islands and smoke. Also it seems the suveillance station has some small guns that aren't visible. I noticed a DD getting shot at from an island with the nearby fort dead (the DD noticed as well and smoked up). Could only really have been the surveillance station.

The forts themselves are rather weak, but can do real damage. They have 0 damage reduction and three main guns. Those main guns fire HE shells once every 5ish seconds. And when they hit they hit for 1848 damage (provided full health), which amounts to 5545 base damage. Their range appear to be around 12km. And the forts can get achievements, people have reported forts getting high caliber and devastating strikes (detonating people), which is rather hilarious. I hope they keep those achievements, as it the only way to tell how effective the forts have been in a battle.

The placement of the forts appear to not be fixed to one place. I saw at least two different placements on Atlantic.

Once the stations and forts are knocked out they repair for a few minutes until full heath at which point they become active again. Non-capped points have inactive forts and stations, but they are of course fully active during capping of an enemy cap.

Seems interesting though with 12km range and those damage numbers IJN DD are becomming even more useless.

Seems interesting, what is the range on the forts guns?

They certainly can, as the video above shows, but that was with Manual Secondaries. No idea if they do so normally, but I would presume as much.

It should be noted that while te forts have three turrets, only two can engage any one target at a time. Perhaps all three can engage a target dead ahead of the middle turret, but I didn't see any case of all three turrets firing at once.

I have only seen videos of the new game mode so far, but although I agree with the thread starter about the concept being interesting I don't really know if it's actually good for the game in the end.

First of all, instead of moving ships captained by actual human beings, I'm shooting and getting shot at by stationary targets that are less exciting than the bots in coop mode. That's not the kind of motivation that has kept me pushing the "Battle" button thousands of times so far. The balancing will probably be a bit of a nightmare when you need to make all ship classes work with and without the presence of these spotting / shooting fortifications.

Perhaps most importantly, the fortifications will give people more dumb ways to throw games, which is not good for anyone's mental health.

Of course I don't have a lot of experience on the mode yet, but what I know of it so far isn't super-exciting. At least the new mode should be designed with special maps or at least layouts specifically designed around the bases, the way it's done now makes me fear that WG just plan to eventually drop some forts into all the domination mode caps and call that added depth to the game.

From what I've seen the forts take full damage from guns so neutralising them doesn't seem too hard unless you're a destroyer.

The cynic in me though notes:

-DD get nerfed because there's now more things that spot them (survey stations)

-DD get nerfed more because they can't cap on their own an enemy cap ( because it has 406mm guns guarding it, and the DD doesn't have the fire power to neutralise them)

-CV'S get nerfed because there's now more AA on the map from the forts and it's in the caps.

-BB's get buffed because they get XP for neutralising things (easy for big guns, long range means they'll fire first, target isn't moving so no lead needed)

-Useless border campers now get rewarded with XP for shooting the easiest targets

-Border campers feel they've done loads when they see 50,000 damage ping up on screen.

So the cynic in me is that the mode panders to bad BB players by making them feel like they've done something,  while making DD less self sufficient

cynic? maybe, but also valid points... going to be interesting how this plays out, and tbh making solo capping a wee bit harder for DDs isn't necessarily a bad thing...

I'd like to think it encourages team play. I am however fully expecting to have to type into chat "please shoot the fort".

Also random side sweep stake:

How long till a bad CV player tries dropping torpedoes onto a fort?

Wait, national voices? Really hope they're doing a separate British voice and not just using the current American accent for all English voiceovers, or that they will at least add this when the first branch of the RN tree is introduced.

I still need to learn more about how this mode works because so far, from what I have seen, I don't see the point.

It seems like a domination mode that caters to campers and big gun and long range ships.

You can only cap a point now if the fort is neutral / suppressed.

Since a fort has 210k HP, single DDs will have a harder time to just run around the map and solo cap.

Imho it's a step to encourage more teamwork.

Moar teamwork? Supressing fort is +30 pts. I can do 60k dmg to fort with Montana. Too easy to destroy. In gearing im doing 7k salvo to it.

well then, time to stat pad my avg damage in Zao now and every other ship

Instead of HP, they should get knocked out like main battery cannons, so people don't stat pad
