Mysterious Ship on the Polar Map

I was in a battle on the Polar map in my Emden the other day, when I happened to spot a ship at anchor off the eastern end of the map. It seemed to be a cargo ship, and there was some sort of camp with tents on the ice nearby. After getting sunk, I zoomed around in free camera for a while, looking for that cool four-motor aeroplane which is shown on the loading screen. I didn't find it, but I took a good look at the anchored ship. It is located just outside the map border, at the very middle of the eastern map edge. There was no smoke from the smokestacks, and I could see no people either on board or on the ice. My impression was that the ship and the camp were both abandoned, but that they were left in an orderly fashion. There was no sign of any conflict.

My first thought was that it is a ship from the ill-fated Lake & Pabodie expedition to Antarctica, sponsored by the Miskatonic University. The expedition took place in 1930-31, and the aeroplane shown on the loading screen seems to be of a type from that era. But since the Polar Map is tier 1-3 only, and neither the Emden nor any other ship from those tiers were active as late as the 1930s, we face a bit of a conundrum. Something eldritch, and probably squamous, might be afoot. At least I hope so.

I intend to pursue further studies of this matter. There will be more battles on the Polar Map, and perhaps then the mystery can be solved. As for now, I leave this post for others to peruse. Some of you may dismiss my report as the irate babblings of a delusional madman, but others will read it and recognize it for what it is: A desperate attempt to stave off having to get back to work after vacation.

Ha! I knew it! They said I was mad, but now we have pixel-based evidence!

EDIT: I mean, wow! How do you people find these things?

Google ^^

The stars on the smoke stacks and the arctic setting make it pretty easy to google. And the name is on the hull in game :look:

I wonder if that eerie glow on the picture might be related to the missing crew on the game map. It looks unearthly.

Guess its a photo taken from a book with glossy paper. At least it looks like it.

No, there must be another explanation. One that is less logical. :hiding:

I hardly dare believe it: The Stars were actually Right!

EDIT: According to this Google person you mentioned, the Krassin took part as an armed convoy escort in the Great Patriotic War. One wonders whether the model on that map might at some time appear as a ship in the game...?

For some reason, my first thought at reading this, and not reading very carefully, was that it was about your average high tier BB.

The plane from the loading screen si likely Tupolev ANT-6/TB-3 in cold weather modification, with skids.

(do not have game right now at hand so going from my memory)

The bright paint used on the plane is typical for Arctic exploration aircrafts, it was supposed to help with finding planes if they had to crash land. Same reason USN planes had yellow wings pre-war, for example (you can find many similar camos also in WoWp).
