Yesterday my ARP Myoko died, some torps hit my ship, it detonated !

However I was trying to shoot at a destroyer, somehow I accidently touched/triggered the middle mouse button and this caused this annoying "track shell" feature to occur, where the camera flies along the bullit/shell. It's very confusing/annoying/hard to get out of and takes op precious seconds which are needed elsewhere to avoid torps and so forth.

(Even the milliseconds difference between "artillery mode" and "free look" matters. Artillery mode is slightly slower to zoom in/zoom out. So for now I prefer free look, though it doesn't rotate the guns/torps).

For those that are wondering: why you simply don't remove it ? Ofcourse I did, I assign the K key to it... however, after updates this has to be re-done... also I was experimenting with free look/artillery mode, and even their the interface is buggy and doesn't remember the correct settings, if you switch back and forth or something it will think the settings were not changed, while in reality it was changed and thus it doesn't store the lastest settings or something like this ?! So could be a bug as well... Anyway... I find this track shell feature highly annoying ?! It was funny/impressive the first few times and kinda cool/audio, but in the game itself, I very very very rarely use it, almost never. I don't play a lot of battleship and don't play a lot of cruiser. But when I do I don't really use that feature, or maybe sometimes... "Call of Noobie" doesn't have it, does this game really need it ?!

Anyway I am curious what community thinks of this highly annoying feature... that very very maybe can sometimes be usefull... but it can also lead to accidental deaths.

In my case, the number of accidental deaths faaaar exceeds the usefullness ! ;) =D Time for a poll ! ;) =D

* update *

Made it more clear that second last question has multiple options too.

Added more options, 0 times and none of the above.

Never use it in game. It's fun to use in the spectator mode which is coming in 0.5.7

I've never managed to accidentally click the middle Burton of the mouse so I don't find it that annoying. Space bar however returns your view to the ship if you tend to accidentally click the wrong keys a lot

Never used if voluntairly. Happened a few times accidentally. If I knew he controls, I might consider using it, but it's moslya a feature, and not of any real importance.

What a goof you are! If you are so annoyed by that feature just f****** change the key settings. You actually took time to whine about this at the forums. The feature is here, if you dont like it, change the key settings!

Can't vote because no answer possible for me for these 2 questions:-

How many times did this accidental trigger of the track shell feature caused you to die ?

You can select maximum of 1 answer

  1. 1 to 5 times
  2. 5 to 10 times
  3. 25 to 100 times
  4. Even more then that
  5. Never

Overall would you say that the track shell feature has caused to kill more or die more ?

You can select maximum of 4 answers

  1. The track shell feature has lead me to kill more enemies.
  2. The track shell feature has lead me to damage more enemies.
  3. I don't use the track shell feature
  4. I don't use the track shell feature and try to disable it/re-assign a key to it, as much as possible.
  5. The accidental track shell feature has lead me to take unnecessary damage.
  6. The accidental track shell feature has lead me to die multiple times (could possibly have been prevented if it did not trigger)
  7. None of the above (ie, I use it but purely for eye-candy)

Edit:-

     Voted now, thx for updating.

IMO it is a cool feature that allows players to improve their game and aimming. If you know how to use it you can increase your hit chance by a lot, but to be honest it shouldn't be available, because it's like having a camera mounted on reallife shells and you watch on your monitors where the shells land and adjust the aim for the next salvo.

I use it on most of my long range shots where every shell that needs to hit really matters, so I watch where they drop and adjust my next shot.

Ok, deleted my vote and re-entered it to make use of the previously-lacking "0 times" answer. Seriously, why was it even absent in the first place, right after a question where you could pick the option that accidentally activating it just doesn't happen to you?

I find it very useful to look around corners when I follow torpedoes I fired half a minute ago before going behind an island. For long-range battleship volleys it can sometimes help with figuring out more exactly where the shells hit.

I'd want to be able to zoom out just a little more, or angle the camera a little more (especially for torpedoes). And better control for which volley you're following.

Overall, it's a great feature that definitely should stay in the game.

Looking around corners with torpedo cam ? First time I heard/read about that ?! Why would that be usefull ? Assuming the enemy ship is still visible via spotting of otherwise, you could still see it on mini map and such ?

Or perhaps even the health overlay behind island ? You could even use the torp aim assist to figure out which way the enemy ship is heading (so what's the use here ?) ?! Do you mean you play destroyer and then fire torpedoes and then use torpedo cam to look around island ? What's the benefit of that ? Hmmm...

although you shouldnt feed the Troll:

it helps with shooting ove rocks and stuff senng the real position oot only the minima. and so on

seriously i dont belive it  that this topic isnt a troll but if it isnt try improving your aim with follow cam it works wonders....

The most useful piece of information you can't find out elsewise is probably where the guns are pointing. It's also easier to determine speed and exact location, since the minimap isn't that precise. But overall it's good to get a different angle on things.

I only use the shell tracer camera when im playing carriers. On the other ships i find it less usefull since it makes me dizzy. I attribute it to the motional blurr. On carriers this doesn't happen mostly because of the lower shell velocity.

It's hard to imagine, since you use the torpedo cam to rotate the camera, this involves moving the mouse ? Doesn't this somehow affect your previous aim ? Or not ? Or do you just re-aim based on the info ? Hmmm..

Also what if something else happens while you watching the cam... seems a bit risky... in calm situations I can imagine it might be usefull... hmmm might try it sometime... but overall... for large islands don't see how this can be usefull.

For smaller ones... perhaps, what ships would you be using ?

Are you guys trolling me with this torpedo cam thing !? LOL.

if youre really looking for advice  this + the info provided about the shot you see

to see excactly how your spread hits every time helps you predicting the hit better in the future

you need to be aware of the situation and watch the mini map

and ofc you dot watch the whole flight that would be silly..... just a quick press z several secs before impact....

Ok so let me get this straight:

1. With spread you mean the shell spread.

2. With "before impact" you mean activating the torpedo cam right before the shells drop... hmm that's kinda interesting.

yes  seeing how your shells hit

superstructur, side, midship, bow aft etc

helps you make/predict those small adjustments like  if you aim a tick above water in etc

youre like aim -> shoot-> do stuff like look at ini map and manuver -> 2-3 sec before shells hit press z(ntime is needed for the damn cam to move) -> watch hit -> draw coclusions -> cam back to ship play like usual

you dont need to do it every shoot and as son as you see you wont thit anywhere close you can press z again and go back earlier

and mostly usefull on long range shots so you wont do it in dds anyway cause there you usually can see the hits unless theres a mountain

Don't push keys you don't want to push, it's that simple.

The game doesn't need to hold your hands if you can't control them good enough to do what you want to.

I find it useful when lobbing orbital artillery over islands, makes it easier to adjust fire.

Sometimes there is a mountain and nothing better to shoot at - Z helps to see where to aim. I did land a couple hits thx to this, even started a couple fires. Not an essential function (other than eye candy in replays ;) ) but situationally useful. My overall damage would be a couple thousands less without it :D
