The Tachibana

Tachibana, the sneaky little Japanese premium that has being circling around World of Warships for some time has finally come to the public

Preview hub

As the Grand Naval Battle event is coming to a close, there is only one last ship left for review, it's the dastardly Tachibana!

Now, this isn't your usual kind of Japanese destroyer, as I had to learn. Let's have a look at it's stats:

Pros:

The guns

the guns on this make her feel more like a US gunboat than a Japanese destroyer, layout is similiar to that of the Smith.

The concealment

This ship has a base concealment of 5.2km with it's premium camouflage. This gives it a camo rating of 99 out of 100

The mobility

A very nimble ship if I have ever driven one. Quick rudder shift. Good on the acceleration

Cons:

Slow maximum speed

The ship caps out at 30 knots, so a Sierra Mike flag is advised. This is however quite common with low tier destroyers, as the Sampson and the Smith share similiar fates.

Bad torp range

The torpedoes can't be fired out of concealment like the ones on the Umikaze, but have a faster reload, one thing to note is that they are smiliar to the stock torpedoes on your's truly.

Low calibre

The calibre size is very small, thus preventing you from penetrating medium to large size targets. You shouldn't be surprised about bouncing not angled to very accutely angled ships.

Short smoke screen

The Smoke duration on this ship is about 20 seconds shorter than on other japanese destroyers i've used, limiting the time you can sit in it, fire out of it, or bait.

Conclusion:

The Tachibana plays very much like a gunboat. You can use your guns quite effectively, since most ships don't have a lot of armour in low tier. The torpedo range forces you to play aggressively, or use it as a DD countermeasure. The smoke screen duration doesn't allow you to sit in it for a prolonged time, this makes it more of a diversion more than anything. The speed is an average for it's tier. It's nothing bad, since cruisers and BBs are relatively slow, too. Maps are also much smaller so distance is not an issue. Even though the Cons are more than the Pros, these can be countered quite effectively in most cases.

Playing her:

My first match was an absolute disaster. But after I got into it some more, I understood how it worked. This was never meant as a conceal 'n fire/torp DD, once you get rid of the Japanese DD prejudice you'll have a lot of good games. I have currently had around 2 bad and 4 good games in this ship. I really enjoy the low rudder shift time on her and the fact that her torpedoes get up and running really quickly. I'd wish for them to have more range, but I can understand why they don't. The smoke screen is a bit of a hassle, since you cannot really bait battleships and cruisers into it, for it's duration is not long enough. It is sufficient to get away quickly, or pop a few shots at your enemies while concealed. The gun calibre is not my cup of tea, just not enough to penetrate a lot of targets, which makes firing AP a pain, I suggest using HE and aiming for superstructures. But then again, AP can penetrate that too. And there isn't much of a superstructure on pre-dreadnought era CAs and DDs. In the event that you do penetrate, as you will see, it can be very satisifying. These are the lowest HP Citadels I have ever made on a ship, still doesn't make it any less great.

Unfortunately, I have no gameplay for this ship, but I am sure there is loads out there.

Final thoughts:

There is not really much to say, it's a good little ship. I'd still prefer the Smith or the Katori over the Tachi, but you can get here for a measily 5 euros in the premium store even if you didn't already get her in the GNB. Funwise I would put her on the same level as a Katori, if you are playing on your own however, the Tachi is the better choice. Katori does very well in divisions while the Tachi is very much a solo DD, not that you cannot play in a division with it, of course. Unfortunately for me, there is nothing about the Tachi that really stands out. The Katori is clearly a one of a kind ship ingame, while the Smith has the unique single torpedo tubes. The Tachibana is however, very ordinary, just like the Albany. As I stated before, ordinary is not bad, it's just nothing much for a ship collector. That's why from a collector's perspective, Tachi ranks quite low, just after the Albany. Worth the diamonds? if you have some left, yes. Worth the money? Sure, I've had less fun for more money before.

The arc on the guns is good, but the penetration, OH the penetration.

Regarding the camo skill, I don't think this ship has such good manuveurability to effectively conceal and torp with 0.3km torp window. It's doable of course, but then again only people training for other japanese DDs will really have the Camo skill already.

Again, this is my opinion, your trips may vary.

It should be added that the Tachibana's AP has 68of normalisation. Making it quite good against the low tier CAs.

Does anyone know why? It's really weird to watch, like my shells are magnetic or something.

Possibly bugged. The next highest normalisation is the Mogami 155mm guns with 8.6o

Ohoho, as a 155mm Mogami player that's good to know.

I guess Tachi's normalisation is just a typo then, like it was meant to be 6.8o and someone forgot the decimal. I kinda hope it doesn't get fixed though, or only gets nerfed by half for 34o, cause I like unique things.

Is this still the case, btw?

She lost her 68normalisation with the changes last patch. She now only has 10o.:(

When using proper angles to target ships sailing in your direction, you can squeeze out a km or two, giving you enough room to maneuver.
