Weather is game-breaking for me

Funnily enough, not everyone has a super-computer these days, nor can everyone afford one.

I'm one of these unlucky souls. I have to make do with a pathetic 2.3ghz and 4GB ram. But at least the game was working. I was on lowest graphics settings possible and game was running relatively quickly. Loading times of matches was decent, but only after a few games.

Then 5.5 happened. And weather literally washed away my performance. EVERY SINGLE time I press battle, I have to wait an eternity for the battle to load, whilst the game loads the weather effects that literally only get shown for 30 seconds.

Before, if I got Two Brothers twice in a row, it would load faster the second time. Now, it loads just as long as the first time, which is well into the battle, usually about 2-3 minutes. Sometimes more. And because I load in so late, the weather effects have already passed, so there was no point in loading the effects anyway.

If I bring this up in game, I get laughed at. One nice young chap actually suggested it was  my fault I was loading in so late because I can't afford a super-computer. Oh yeah, and because QUOTE 'ur a retard, go play tetris' END QUOTE. Yeah, it was totally my fault for loading in 1000 years after the battle started and being surrounded by enemies that I couldn't do anything about thanks to said 1000 year loading time.

But I digress. The fact is, weather is game-breaking, almost exclusively to the less fortunate players who don't have high end PC's. Personally, I don't mind the mechanics the weather might introduce. Don't segregate us if we can't run the weather. Just give us the ability to turn off the visual effects, but not the mechanics. By all means, make us kep the mechanics, but let us turn the visuals off.

Not an unreasonable request.

Will be a bit odd with the "cyclone" just being a bit darker skies and everyone suddenly disappearing but should be available for those with low performance

Strange, my PC is not that new or good and it has no problems with weather. Even tried the always on weather mod and it had no effect on the framerate.

What are your system specs?

I'm in the same boat (pun not intended), as the weather patch has caused a massive performance drop for me that makes the game borderline unplayable. It used to be that the first couple of games of an evening had longer loading times while my computer steadily loaded more and more of the game's content as necessary, while the in-game performance was reasonable even on middling graphics settings. The patch hit, then suddenly my loading times are doubled and even after reducing all detail settings to their absolute minimum my CPU is still struggling to the point where I find it is starting to affect my gameplay even on battleships, let alone my poor carriers.

It's doubly annoying that it occurred at the same time as the Grand Naval Battles event, so the time when I really need to be putting my hours into the game is also the same time that they made technical changes to discourage me from playing.

They did make 'Ocean' port for those with low fps if im not mistaken, i think they might do something about some ingame visualisation as an option, to help those with PC problems, to try and keep the portion of the playerbase playing and donationg for the WG, i think its in their interest so that the game could be available to a larger crowd not just those with super PCs.

Hope they wont follow Warthunder steps, that after every major update they make, a player pretty much must upgrade theyr PC to keep the fps the same it was, and have everithing running smoothly.

I used to have quite bad loading issues waiting for up to 2-3min, but after the optimizations done in last patch ( and reinstalling game on an SSD ), the game now loads lighting fast for me and I'm usually in the game first of everyone after 10 seconds or so!

Clear Vision is for the port, it turns off that grey overlay with ships you don't own in the tech tree. It does not remove the weather.

Neither does the fog remover.

OP needs to check his setup, and maybe reinstall the client, because his reasoning just doesn't make sense.

The weather effect might impact his fps, but not his load times. Weather effects aren't an immense load of textures and geometry, but mostly shader effects. Ie, they're relatively few lines of code. Thus them making your game load slower? Incredibly unlikely to be the culprit. Also, the changes to the file structure to the client should have made for a far larger impact on load times, and far more than a bit of code would.

tldr. correlation doesn't mean causation

Believe it or not I actually have a worse PC (potato) than the OP and the weather effects have made no difference to my game performance, however an option to turn weather effects off would make sense

A relativly cheap alternativ might (!) be a SSD harddrive. Usually the game loads way faster from one of these even on older systems. Maybe you can lend yourself one from a friend and try it. If it works the money investment for a new SSD looks to be worth it. And as ArgaewaenME mentioned above, try a fresh install.

I guess, you'll probably be able to test this a lot earlier than WG puts a button in to turn off the visuals.

unfortunate mate :( I hope they will fix this issue for you.

But just as a question, you don't need to answer and it's by all means not meant to be offensive, but why don't you buy a new pc? It doesn't have to be a high end one, maybe one of your friends has one lying around he doesn't use anymore?

So I tested removing my mods to se if that made a difference. Not really. Map size probably has a factor, as big race and two brothers take totally different times to load

My PC is old as heck and i have basically the same problem - i get into the game 2 minutes late.

But.

It was even worse before the last patch and weather effects dont seem to have any effect on how long it takes me to load in.

Did you defrag your harddrive after 0.5.5? That patch changed almost the entire file structure of the game, so maybe try that and see if it helps (it did help a little for me).

Other than that... well our systems are just getting too old :(

I find the 7km viz range tedious. I wouldnt miss it. When the weather was like that in real sea battles, they had radar in the upper teirs. Its a nice idea, just not sure about how it makes me feel as an end user. Its almost akin to being blindfolded.

Have you updated your video card drivers, and chipset drivers? People tend to forget about the chipset drivers and they will help speed up data throughput. Also, see if an update for your BIOS is available. These little things help squeeze out more power out of older computers.

The biggest boost is of course getting more RAM. 4 Gb is very little (although my work laptop has it and seems to work ok-ish) but 2 banks of 8 will help you tremendously and they are not that expensive, especially second-hand.

Are you sure the long loading times are related to the bad weather and not the changes to the file system? Have you tried a fresh installation of the game?

How often do you encounter these loading times? If you got them every single battle, they are not caused by the weather, because weather effects only appear in 50% of all battles.

I dont get into the game late but when i do it often freezes in the middle of battle, just day after last big patch my game freezes 14 times. Now i pretty much restart the game after every battle. Also i am scared to use expensive ships like my izumo or ibuki because i might freeze in the battle and pay big repair costs. BTW i cannot put blame on WG for this because i don't have very strong comp configuration, and WG wants only to improve the game, but still this was not happening before this big patch. I am persistent to continue to play just because i love the game, but things are hard for me after last patch, if i play more battles it will freeze. My configuration: AMD Quad core 2333, 4 G memory, Card 512 PCI Radeon, 160 G hard disc, and i use XP. Reason i use XP is because WG did one big update before 6 months which forced me to uninstall windows 7, and to use XP just to continue to play. As said i don't blame WG, i am sure some of my components are weak, i think also my PSU provides too little power, i have 250 W unit.

Did a complete re-install of the game. If there is a decrease in lad times, it's not by much.

Every single battle. If I'm lucky, I'll get a 1 minute late start.

How the devil do I update chipset and video card drivers? I've gone to manufacturers support page, but must of the stuff there should already be on te PC, given the 2012 dates and my 2013 purchase of this pc.

RAM is absolutely dirt cheap at the moment. Dirt cheap.

Also, as mentioned already, weather effects should not effect your load times. Have you defragged and upgraded your drivers etc?

You can buy an SSD for less than the price of a premium ship. Install the game (and whilst you're about it the Operating System) on that and the loading times will be fine.

Sorting out the graphics settings might take a better graphics card and maybe a CPU (and therefore motherboard?) upgrade.

I can only upgrade to 8GB RAM max, only two RAM slots. When it comes to defragging, never done it. Guess I'll be doing that tonight. Anyone know a fast way of doing it? I've heard it can take 12 hours for 500GB

Do you have a 64 bit Operating System (OS)?

No point in going above 4 gig RAM if you're still on a 32 bit Windows OS.
