Ever since 5.5 hit and destroyer players were all hit with mass hallucinations, there have been many posts about strategies and methods on how to deal with the non-changes. Unfortunately, these are a bit scattered around several threads and sub-forums, some focusing on DDs, others on the general Smoke and/or Detection mechanics, others still designed only for IJN DDs, which were finally re-balanced in a way that made absolute sense and left everyone happy.

 

So I figured we could use a thread to concentrate all the strategies to adapt to our own deranged perception, because obviously nothing changed and you'd have to be a crazy person to say otherwise.

 

Personally, I bought Stellaris.

I adapted by trying out Overwatch, ended up buying it instead of a discounted Atago. I'd rather hallucinate in a different game it seems.

I adapted it by stopping playing high-tier destroyers. And putting more of my time into XCOM 2.

Mounting torpedo acquisition perk on my Chapayev captain to increase radar range to 14,5 km and troll DD even more :D

Quitting T 8 DDs and buying back some T 2 instead.

However I'm not using smoke anymore as a viable tactic, I just camp more and hug islands instead.

I think ppl are using smoke wrong now. I think you need to start turning away and put the smoke behind you so you don't keep sliding out and keeping your detection on.

 

Theory tho. I don't DD. I just face them a lot :)

 

Those that smoke and slow up now give you 3-8s to shoot them depending on how quickly they slow up.

Have fun doing that with the amazing turning rate of russian DDs. Or when there is a plane above your head (you might not even see).

In russian DD you're spotted anyway so there is little difference. And I'd even say if you're not spotted when pissing as many people off as possible, you do it wrong:bajan:

Slowing down to nearly a stop before using offensive smoke.

Personally, I bought Stellaris. 

 

Stellaris really is the best remedy for the current stresses of this game, it is getting me through the GNB event nicely (by me only playing Stellaris!). :teethhappy:

In russian DD you're spotted anyway so there is little difference. And I'd even say if you're not spotted when pissing as many people off as possible, you do it wrong:bajan:

 

True, but you would rather like to be unspotted when getting into position or when you discover two cruisers at 9 km. Defensive smoke doesn't help you, it's like all ships have radar at all times.

It's not as good as the first of the reboots, but it's still good. Probably worth it now, if you like that sort of game, definitely it worth it once discounting starts :-)

Well, aside from various snide comments I could make, I have decided to stop using the stop-in-smoke when detected. Instead I use it as a cover wall in retreating. If I can be sure the incoming fire is limited, then the stop-in-smoke is still applied.

but you have to admire the wg.

 

they nerfed torpedoes so you must close distance to enemy fleet, and then they nerfed smoke so enemy fleet can actually kill you. SNAFU

Didnt you hear that Ap has been nerfed every second patch and BB dispersion nerfed every third patch? Now BBs are lucky to land a hit and when they do 97% if them are over pens.

Well, every mine battle in Iowa starts with prayer to RNGesus for blessing to at least be able to hit water, because at times even that isn't that easy.
