IJN Katori : who has played it ? impressions ?

i noticed Katori (premium cruiser tier 3) is available as one of the rewards for the Grand Naval Battles event.

 

that's a ship i i concidered getting for a while, mostly because historically, it's unique and interesting (originally meant to be a only training ship but ended up forced into battle multiple times as administrative flagships, armed transports and support/escort vessel for lack of other available ships)

and also because i didn't keep any normal ships below tier 4 so it whould be a nice excuse to come back play at super low tier once in a while

 

but i also noticed , while reading on on this class of ships.... that their top speed was only 18 Kts (because they're only training ships)....

uhhh, so how does that work out in game ? i'd like to hear from people who have it, or have played it in the CBT, how does she feels like ? is she still fun inspite of the low speed ?

 

i mean not only that, but, according to what i read, they had also NO armor, NONE whatsoever; and were build to comercial standards rather than Military standards to save money, so they realistically also deserve bad HP compared to other cruiser of simillar displacment....

 

the Tenryuu has the same number of guns, more torpedoes, and is of course conciderably faster and has armor.... and the St-Louis... yeah, let's not even compare xD

 

it doesn't matter if she's not Uber Try-hard competitive, since i mostly kinda want her as a cool and unique collector... but, i'm still gonna play her once in a while, so it whould help if she's not a complete disaster...

how is she like ?

im wondering the same thing, the guns and speed are a big concern to me, it seems like a slow yubari, which isnt good to begin with...

Can't say, in CAT and CBT she was tier I, not tier III like she is now

Judging from her stats, she's very weak for her tier, which is why you see her in the event rather than in the premium shop.

Another thing, basic and advanced firing training were nerfed so it will only apply to 130mm guns and lower (with an exception however: any secondary guns above 130mm will still be affected e.x. 155mm secondaries on Yamato/152mm on Warspite). That means Katori doesn’t get the range boost nor the RoF later in 0.5.3

This was the ship I was aiming for as I already have the tacibana and Albany.  Guess I'll aim for the smith instead. I don't mind "bad" ships (I have yubari, sims and atlanta) but I draw the line at terribad ships, particularly really slow.ones

The Katori is pretty much a Yubari at half speed and a tier below, take that however you like it.

it's the slow that bothers me. At least something fast can cap/spot/go on a suicide torp run. Something slow is tedious trudging along

It worked fine at t1, but considering the Erie only does 20 kts it might not be such a good yardstick 

 

Since the Katori can face t5, I keep seeing a game where a Katori is trying to chase down a Bogue but being unable to close the distance.

Not that this would happen too often, anyway. 18 knots generally is a pain. Even a Kawachi is faster! Put a high skilled captain in my Emden today (to see wether seal clubbing would count for GNB). She is able to go 24 knots yet after actively participating in cleaning out one flank and some base defense I neither made it into range of any of the remaining enemies again nor came even close to their base before we won.

Well, slap a speed flag on that bad boy and you will get a whopping 18,9 knots instead. You might actually be able to catch up to a Bogue before the match ends then. 

 

At least its range (13,5 KM) partially makes up for the lack of speed.

What makes the lack of speed particularly disappointing is the great torpedoes it has for its tier. Sadly it will be difficult to use them on a ship as slow as the Katori.

Played it in Live test for a couple of matches.

 

Nothing too interesting,too slow for my taste,meh guns,bad turning rate.

 

While range is good,the shell spread ruins the fun.

Smith is goal 1! will get Katori if i make 800 stones! already have the other 2 ships. But will wait till end just in case this surprise is a Prem to buy with Diamonds

Smith is probably the funniest ship in low tiers for an experienced DD captain as it fires single torpedo salvos like an MG42.

 

When i played it i was a DD noob so i cannot give you a good description for it...

 

Other more experienced ST's though performed very well with it.

Ugh, the Katori was one of the ships i was going for, the other being the Smith.

 

This "secret" at the 12Mil mark better NOT be a decent Premium ship that one can unlock for a substantial amount of diamonds.

I'd get a rage attack if i found out, i wasted 800 Diamonds on sub par ships and missed a better one. ^^
