cro_pwr Players 2,735 posts 10,310 battles Report post #2 Posted March 14, 2016 great anti air, good at melting someone giving you broadside because of fast reload time... mediocre at best at anything else. atm probably the weakest t10 cruiser.
Sander93 Beta Tester 990 posts 3,431 battles Report post #3 Posted March 14, 2016 She is one thing and one thing only: situational. She's really fun to play half of the time, and pretty terrible the other half. CQC against cruisers she absolutely wrecks everything. Up close even BBs will have a hard time (they'd need lucky citadel hits) overcoming the DPS. Plane formations just melt away if you've upgraded the AA a bit. HE/fire/AP damage against distracted battleships far away does pretty decent damage. In all other situations, you'll generally wish you had a Zao or Hindenburg. The Des Moines is quite bad on her own and you can't do much damage at longer ranges due to the terrible shell arc and velocity. I've just started the German CA line and I'm at the Admiral Hipper and the German AP velocity and penetration is so much better. Des Moines DPS becomes irrelevant when you can't hit anything. The Hindenburg does less DPS on paper, but due to higher hit chance and higher damage chance the actual DPS on medium-long ranges is probably better. Even up close a Hindenburg could have higher DPS because of the better arcs, penetration and accuracy which means you can score citadels more easily.

[BAZI] allufewig Beta Tester 2,912 posts 15,294 battles Report post #5 Posted March 15, 2016 A bit too situational imho. My first 30-40 games on it went horrendously bad, now Im recovering. Definitively no Atlanta but I still feel useless so many times. Hightier-meta is so far from being close-combat oriented that some games you have a hard time finding your sweet spot. Carriers still are not very common and I absolutely hate it, that this ship gets so freakingly heavy hits from BBs even without citadels. Its absolutely not uncommon to eat 3 shells out of a 10-gun volley from an Amagi at 20km (happens at every range) and you take ~12k damage. You dont bounce BBs but they also dont overpenetrate you. Like never. Even when driving other BBs I think I get overpentrated more than in Des M. tl;dr: What Sander93 said. Situational like ever. Great moments at close range, but ballistics still make you lose hair.
Th0mu Players 211 posts 5,199 battles Report post #6 Posted March 20, 2016 I just had it. 4 games yet, died everytime. I'm premium, got 100k credits minimum, an average of 1800 xp and 40k hits points. I feel like it's a Cleveland before it was nerfed.
Sille Beta Tester 141 posts 3,721 battles Report post #7 Posted March 23, 2016 I played 5 matches in it, 2 matches a bismark hit me whit 3 shells and i was instant dead, 1 match deacent like 70k damage couse of staying on long range and not ebing seen. 1 game was tiered again a Yamato and i killed him but when he was dead he had killed around half my team and i doubt i would have killed him if he did fire on me instead lost couse the enemy capped on this time. 1 match where i did 50k damage and lost 46% of my health from one shoot from a bismark. So i concluded its still not for me and i guess i dont like it still. -Shell speed 2 low -Angle of fireing is 2 high - No survival -sluggish

Kurbain Players 1,976 posts 2,773 battles Report post #12 Posted March 23, 2016 A video by iChase regarding the Des Moines: Still a beast at close range. I will probably go for the Des Moines next after the Zao. I love ships with a high fire rate. Screw the slow shell speed, they are still faster than any of those from T9 cruisers and lower, except maybe for the Hipper and Roon. Better than the Ibuki at least and I managed to hit stuff with that thing.

Sander93 Beta Tester 990 posts 3,431 battles Report post #16 Posted March 23, 2016 At ranges higher than ~12km I'd say the Hindenburg and Zao actually have (much) higher DPS because of higher hit and penetration probability. The Des Moines is unbeatable up close, but close range engagements are rare. I don't have the Hindenburg yet but I already love the Roon's AP shells (currently on 110.000 average damage) because it's so much easier to hit stuff at longer ranges and deal large chunks of damage per salvo. Des Moines' DPS is fun, but the shell velocity and arc absolutely kill the ship compared to the other tier 10 cruisers. It's too situational to perform good on average. Kurbain Players 1,976 posts 2,773 battles Report post #19 Posted March 25, 2016 The shells are by far the slowest of all the 203mm shells. Can't be. A friend of mine got the Des Moines and we compared shell travel times with my Ibuki while in-game. The shells of the Des Moines require 0,3 seconds less to reach 15 KM than those of the Ibuki. The Des Moines is unbeatable up close, but close range engagements are rare. I don't have the Hindenburg yet but I already love the Roon's AP shells (currently on 110.000 average damage) Damn, that is crazy. Got some replays? Sander93 Beta Tester 990 posts 3,431 battles Report post #25 Posted March 27, 2016 That saddens me greatly. Des Moines is life. I loved it, but it's too situational now. WG killed it when they nerfed the shell velocity and arcs. German performance (AP shells) is much better and more reliable. If WG ever decides to buff Des Moines' shells I'll be happy to take her out for a spin again.
