... And there is a special to commemorate Operation Chariot. Could it be that the Royal Navy is closer than one might think?

HMS Campbeltown was a Town-Class destroyer, which was a Wickes-Class from the US Navy that was transferred to the Royal Navy.

Not completely sure I want a lease lend destroyer famous for blowing itself up. I have enough destroyers that blow up regularly already! LOL

Yes. It's also been promised in a Q & A session on the RU Forum.

QUOTE

Q. When will you release tier 5-6 premium ships, what nations?

A. We have many plans, during all this year, we will release premiums around those tiers, there's even a French ship.

when they've pretty much already announced that the Putinite Cruisers will arrive around the 23rd why would they release a 2nd line within days of the that patch?

trying to think of it in a business sense they've already announced that they have 4 lines coming this year so most presumably they're going to release one line each quarter to maintain the temporary boosts in interest each new additional line creates

HMS Campbeltown will be a tier 3 or 2 premium destroyer. (It's a Wickes dressed up to look like a  Raubvogel-class torpedo boat)

Don't forget that the Russian DD's were introduced together with the German CA's.

Not even that. 1x76mm gun and a few 20mm, with no torpedo tubes, wouldn't qualify for tier 1.

That is if we take her Op: Chariot layout. In her pre Op: Chariot layout she had the same armament as the USS Wickes, namely: 4x 4"/50 and 1x 3"/23 with 4x3 torpedo tubes.

Well, with the conversion for the St Nazaire raid she wouldn't qualify for tier 1, you are completely right on that point. However she was built as a Wickes class DD, which would put her at tier 3.

Now, the thing is: if you put her in as originally built she would be a viable tier 3, but wouldn't look anyway near of what she was when she got famous, so it's quite a dilemma

Of course I'm talking about Campbeltown in the raid. What would be the point of having a premium Wickes just like any other?

Possible inspiration for the wallpaper.

This photo is taken before the explosives detonation.

And this one, from the other side:

Then there were also several variations of her armament in the Royal Navy service before the raid... :hmm:

The point? Gameplay-wise it would be: having a workable T3 British premium ship, which is pretty much already in game, so her ups and downs can be "researched" for free and judged accordingly. Even in her pre OP: Chariot configuration she'd be pretty popular, as that is still the ship that would go on to blow up the dock gates.

In the OP: Chariot config she'd indeed be pointless (unless of course she's to be loaded with explosives for extra ramming damage and guaranteed ramkills on higher-tier opponents:trollface:)

Not sure if the same was true for Campbeltown before the raid, but HMS Bath, also originally a Wickes, had her aft 4 inch and 3 inch guns removed and replaced with a 76mm AA gun, as well as some downgrades of her torpedo armament (2 of 4 launcher sets removed).

Not that that is good and would make her a great tier 3 DD though, but alternate setups for the class at least existed

Edit: just googled, there was a refit from September till November 1940, right after she was transferred to the RN, but I havn't seen info yet what exactly that refit entailed
