WG Developer released a Smoke Boundary Mod

One of the WG developers recently published a mod on the Russian forum which displays circles that mark the outer boundaries of smokescreens.

Instructions on how to install the mod manually:
1. Download the scripts.zip file available here: https://files.wargaming.net/public.php?service=files&t=62a16783a3d0ad338b75a2d0d49142b0&download or use the link on the Russian forum in case you think I'm trying to send you a virus. 
2. Extract the contents with WinRar or 7zip and place them in the following folder: \World of Warships\res_mods\0.5.2.4
3. Done

As this mod has been released by one of the WG developers, it is safe to assume that this modification is not considered illegal in any way despite the obvious gameplay advantages it offers its users.
Nevertheless caution is advised as I don't know about the stance of WG EU regarding this mod.

I would like to thank him for bringing this mod to my attention.

I'm aware that the mod subsection is probably the most fitting place for this announcement, but this has been a highly-requested feature and it hasn't been getting nearly as much attention as it deserves so far since not many people check the mod subsection.
I'm sure it's in the developers best interest to receive as much as feedback as possible regarding this modification.

As a DD player something like that would be useful indeed, actually not even just DD players. Sometimes I use smoke to cover team mates but it hardly works because they can't tell where the smoke is. Though I'm not sure all those doted lines would add to the lovely look of the game. Maybe less dotted lines and able to change the colour of the lines may work.

Your probably right there. Being a mod it would only been seen by the mod user.

The circles appear around every puff of smoke (whoever released them), from allies as from enemies. The circle turns green when you step into the smoke.

But yeah only those who have installed the mod can see it.

As an added note: the developer in charge of this mod told that they will never release a smoke timer showing how long until the smoke runs out.

It's not a nice visual but the game should have a marker for the smoke. Even if it's just on the mini map as a cv player sees the smoke from above.

I'd rather have a small 6th sense like icon that tells if you are in smoke as part of game UI.

Just play RU DDs and the Situational Awareness skill will do that job for you considering how bad their concealment/firing-penalty is. :P

Good point, i often let off smoke when to protect a team member when he/she is in trouble, with the mod i would know if i was still in the smoke, not sure about friendly ship though

Well, if your team has it they should be able to see it.

Ive seen pics where he's seeing the boundaries of enemy smoke so.

If used by a division of Kutuzov's (who cycle their premium smokes) this mod could create some interesting game play.

 

 

Why would it change gameplay? It only visualises an ability that is already in the game and doesn't change anything. It only makes it easier to see taking away yet another component that could be considered as skill.

Tbh this makes it fairly easy to guess the position of an enemy destroyer because you can see the circles turn up. Just shoot at the center of the newest circle and lead a little.

I'm not sure that this particular mod is needed, but there certainly needs to be something that tells the person actually in the smoke where they are.

In reality they could just look out of the window!

At the moment, everyone else knows for sure that you are in smoke except you!

 

My vote would be to add smoke clouds to the minimap.

you can already see them puffing smoke in zoom mode, so it won't change anything.

Not if you play on a toaster like me. I can't see any smoke whatsoever from certain distances/angles.

It may be a general issue. I play on the highest graphical settings and got the same problem sometimes.

It's especially notably regarding my own smoke, although that part may be intended.
