Novelty gradually wearing off

Despite the fact this is probably my main game for the past year and more, the novelty is sort of dying out on me. Not sure if it's an exclusive case or not but as it is right now it's alot of fighting the same ships over and over again, dying to the same things over and over again and just basically stacking up money whilst grinding a bunch of tier 8s. New Orleans and Admiral Hipper in my case.

At this point I'm not really even sure what I'm waiting for. I keep checking the main page every 10-15 minutes, knowing full well that the coming patch isn't exactly going to add anything to make me go ''Hoorah, something new!". There are ships that still retain their fun factor, namely the Zao, Murmansk, Marblehead, Myoko and Warspite, Fuso, Kutuzov and Fujin, but beyond those, which I play for a couple of games, I don't feel like I'm in an active pursuit of anything particularly interesting. I'm a cruiser player and I've made it my goal to get every cruiser in the game, gradually making my way to the Des Moines and the Hindenburg. And with both New Orleans and Hipper I've reached the point in the game where I don't feel exactly powerful ( Worst case being my stock New Orleans which is just a pain to grind through ) and I'm just trying to scrape by a 3k xp win in order to push past that horrible state, whilst struggling to do a whole lot against tier 9/10 enemies that actually know how to play the game.

It's just not particularly exciting anymore. I remember the joy of getting a new ship and going ''Wonderous, lets see what she can do!'' but right now, I know very well what the ships I'm grinding can do and their capabilities in question are not especially fun. Maybe it's just a way of saying ''I'd like more ship lines.''. I know for a fact that I'd play the heck out of the Royal Navy, but that's not coming anytime soon(I think?) and this isn't a thread about that. I also know some people will say ''well, you haven't tried this line from the available lines'' but the fact of the matter is I enjoy a particular playstyle and I've tested out the others to know they're not for me(Played up to Amagi, Farragut, Mutsuki, Ryuujou) and I just go online for roughly an hour as if it were a chore. The news of a new game mode, i.e ranked battles hardly made me budge considering the hype WG is pushing out towards them. I know others that are itching to try them but I ain't one of them.

So, in conclusion, I kind of just wonder... What is there to do to spark up the same excitement there was.. hell, a few months back cause I sure as hell ain't feeling the rush for the Zao reflected in the grind for Des Moines and Hindenburg and playing the same, fun ships over and over again gradually grows weary, nevermind fighting them.

I kind of know what you mean.  Fortunately I still have plenty of lines left to head up but as a primarily BB player I do wonder if soon I'll really be itching for new BBs having just unlocked both tier 10 BBs.  Luckily I still have plenty of other lines... and I didn't get to tier 10 to look at the BBs... but having a clear goal of ships to try and own is important to me and rate of introduction of new lines is fairly glacial currently.

I've had this before. Personally what worked for me was stop trying to grind. The grind becomes a chore, and a long one and it kills all fun.

Instead:

Rebuy a ship you enjoyed but didn't get to play much of: you did pretty well in the phoenix, but only played 14 games in it (pvp). Why not rebuy it and have a blast at tier 4? You won't be encountering the same tier 8 ships over and over.

Equally have a break from your chosen class and play more of the others. I'd got into a rut with BB, I was doing fine but was finding it slow and mildly frustrating if RNG dealt me a duff shot. So I started playing the other classes, and it's all different - now I'm laying ambushes, dodging  shells or trying to pincer with torp bombers. I'd played all the other classes before, but I'd forgotten they're fun too.

Go play something else for a bit? Thrash through a good single player game, then come back and enjoy your ships again?

Are you playing regularly with other people? Alternatively find some good players and derp around with them.

I play Shogun 2 alot. Attila proved to be a disappointment. Alot of that on the offside. Sounds suggestions above, I might pick up carriers again.

This will happen with anything. Everything gets dull after a while. I still love playing the game though. But I don't play every day so I build up an itch :)

Also with so many ships in port there are many itches. And I've just started cv and DD again.

When more lines come I'll have even more.

I think the trick is to leave it. Don't play for a week.check the page every WEEK not every 15 mins! :D

Lost my spark for this game 6 months ago, took a break and came back to this.. Meh!.

Makes you wonder why they have kept the Royal Navy away, probably a ploy to keep you playing and paying and then get more out of you when they finally release the RN. If they released the RN first, this game would be over fast.

The longevity of WoT , which is comparable in that matter, is actually based on 2 things.

- New vehicles / lines / nations, grindable and premium

- Clan system and gamemodes for clans with rewards: Clanwars /Stronghold and the campaigns

The second one is actually more important. Everything else, like events, missions, maps, temporary gamemodes and so on is actually just the icing on the cake in my opinion.

In WoWs they are building the playerbase shorttermed with the events like Project R, but those people will only stay if the 2 points above are implemented.

And being the geniuses they are they have put off clans for now in WoWs. Great.

I understand this very well. New ships make battles always very interesting because they add some new flavor to the game. BUT! Releasing cycle of new ship lines is too slow for me... We got new grindable  ships last time in October and I have already those avaible ships that I want. Also, I don't enjoy much high tier battles so I don't have reason get more high tier ships (I have Des Moines and that is enough for me).

So, I mostly play only for fun (of course that is  good thing) but battles seems resembling too much eachother which eats little bit fun more  and more and I am afraid that this game is losing its shine. Free-to-play games live from new content and I think that releasing schedule needs  to be faster...

I would say the game did an excellent job if it managed to entertain you for a year. :)

I recommend playing some different games until the English cruisers and German battleships are introduced.

Forcing yourself to play and enjoy the game may just decrease your interest in it even more.

Do it. I re-bought the Aoba the other day and I'm really enjoying myself. I will probably have even more fun when the Cleve and Nurnberg lose AFT & EM.

Wait do you guys stop playing low tiers when you get a high tier ship? Low tiers are fun! And I'm much looking forward to the patch which will keep the total noobs away from me in my St. Louis. :)

actually I think WG should run a team battles event for low tiers (2 and 3 only) for the lols :D

seriously. High tiers (I only go up to eight at the moment) are serious concentration fests. After a couple of those I take out St. Louis, Arkansas or even Emden for some fun. i try not to deliberately "seal club" by seeking out players in game who seem to know what they are doing as well, like going toe to toe with another St. Louis for a proper pew pew pew battle :)

I never sold the Aoba, in fact it was the last cruiser in the line i had fun with. I think about buying the Furutaka again when the announced changes to AFT/EM hit the live server.

I've recently been thinking about how much fun it would be to get a T1 Hermelin with a T5 captain and enter higher tier battles.

That ship has the same amount of AP damage per minute as the Kiev/Tashkent, except it is only T1 and would have 7,5 KM detectability.

And since it's a T1 cruiser, it is very agile and small, making it hard to hit despite its slow speed.

I can totally imagine that thing holding its own at T4/T5.

You mean dealing with the only competent players so that you then have a free run at the rest? :P

I do play some low tiers - I have all tier ships from 2 up - but, I don't find find the really low tiers that much fun.  Sure there is chaos, but you don't get punished for your mistakes as severely.  Maybe sometimes it is nice to have a bit of a break... but recently my break ships has been my Gremy which is a mid tier ship.

Clan system / map would have been a good incentive for many people but obviously there are no plans for this year.

Ranked in it's current state is crap.

Project:R was nice, but not challenging.

Grindy game is grindy.

Which is why I'm looking forward to the changes to MM in the next patch. But tier IV to VI is where the fun is. Tier VIII is a struggle for me to get into and enjoy. I've had good games, but they are usually long and technical. It's also more of a pain when you lose due to how long it takes and the economy.

Agreed about tiers 4 to 6 being where the fun is.What the game needs is the new lines alright.Even if it's just a few ships to wet our appetites. Some new RN and German ships would be a delight and keep the game fresh.

Since going up the ijn BB tree I'm having more fun than ever in the game, however bar the frustration of being in a team full of potatoes (which can be highly frustrating at times) the main thing the game needs is more diversity, simply adding more ships (unless they bring totally new play styles) wont cut it for me.

We need more stuff to play with in game.

Games like these are easy to get burned out on if you focus on grinding instead of having fun with the matches. Some of the grind criteria in this game is unhealthily steep. I'm not into cruisers at the moment, so the ARP Myoko grind became a big nope when I got to the "set fire to 300 ships" part. Just say nope.

I keep taking breaks from this game. When I return, it's usually enjoyable again.
