my noob question of this week...

I have a question. I tried to search it on the Forum but get either 1000 hits or 0. First of all: in playing I qualify myself as barely noob off. But in game technical terms I look at awe at the noobs. I figure for most of tthe community I must look like I'm ready for my wheelchair by now, having the age of 42... To my defense: I've been enchanted by gaming my entire life! Yes: i've actually played "the last Ninja" on my C64 with tapes! My only "problem" is I'm extremely particular with my game choices: 99.9% of the games doesn't appeal to me @ all. F.e. I only liked Quake II. The rest bored me quickly. I've played Sins of a Solar Empire completely gray: THE most nasty AI I've ever met in RTS! Untill winning of the max # of enemies on the max lvl. It's even the case with other PvE games. The tank-games don't appeal to me @ all. World of warships however hooked me like a famined fish on the bait. This is just an introduction for my stupid question: so you don't have to bother burning me to the ground for being totally unaware of my homework knowlegde.

So here's my question: when I started this game and started to roam the forums I had the title "seaman" After that suddenly appeared "able seaman" and know I bear the title "leading rank." I see similar titles and others with other players. What does this imply? The number of battles I've been in? The # of XP I gained?? I posponed this question too long, thinking it might be extremely stupid. Then I remembered a thing from my univ time: the only stupid question is the one you don't ask... Could you enlighten this noob? Thanks!!

Why don't you post your "noob"-questions not under "Newcomer section" or "off-topic"?

It's just a title in accordance with your forum posts.

Fair question I reckon, when I was first here I wondered what it meant.

Then I laughed, just to myself. Seamen. Lol

because nobody reads those. I know you think youre pro with your 60% win rate but others here like to give advice to newer players.

@OP your title is based on how many posts you had in forums.

If I have to believe the poll I saw a few months ago that makes you the average age of the community. :P

And +1 on Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion. Its a winner on our annual lan parties, together with Battle for Middle Earth II, CnC Generals and the recent addition of World of Warships.

Since this thread has already been answered, I can contribute to the off-topic items:

- I am also old enough to have played C64 with a tape drive.

- I have a working C64 with disk drive and two working Amigas that I pull out once in a while, when I feel retro enough (all looks shyte on a big flat screen tv, though).

My first computer was a TRS-80. I still reneged the excitement of adding the additional chip which meant it could do lowercase.

I will join the club then. C64 with tapes, and yes, I did played Last Ninja amongst many other games. Maybe because we are old (46 years here) and don't have lightning reflexes anymore, WoWS is still fun to play for us oldies. I'm a casual gamer, but sometimes end up being # 1 of a match. And I just discovered last week that using AP against Cruisers with my own Cruisers is more effective then HE, hehe. Was too lazy to be bothered to switch to AP before. But when I started with my German cruisers I gave it a try and noticed the results. Silly thing is that for this bootcamp I have to use HE again. :)

Hi all,

I had C64 with tape as well (it was technically my 2nd computer - my 1st one was my uncle's Sinclair Spectrum that was 90% of time at my home)! :)

I even bought floppy 5.25" drive for it in USA (it was the size of the shoe-box)... :teethhappy:

After that I went Atari ST path (didn't get Commodore Amiga) and after that it was PC...

Z80 first comp user here (Commodores were next to impossible to acquire were I live back then)... I still remember in awe those Amiga graphics... WHAT THE HELL?!?!? YOU CAN CHANGE THE COLOR BY PIXEL?!?!?!? ;)

And yes, SoSE has the most challening AI from any RTS by 2 reassons:

- Takes decissions based on REAL detection as a player is forced to.

- Has learned to predict the outcome of a battle and thus tries to flee when it doesn't look well... At strategic level, not just the dumb kite scripts some specific units have on more popular RTS... If you know what I mean ;).

I was a ZX81 man myself.  My gaming route went Pong Video for the TV game -> ZX81  -> ZX Spectrum-> SEGA Maegadrive-> My first PC in 1994.  Never looked back.

Yeah I always get the same feeling in battle: "confirmed penetration!"

Lol! Nice to see my thread brings up old memories. Yeah I had the shoobox floppy drive as well. Derping with scissors in order to double the flop capacity to a staggering 1024 KB!!!

Since this turned into an "oldster" tread, my first computer was a Texas Instruments TI-99/4A, quickly replaced by the much more popular C64 :)
