Why do people bother typing gg after a totally one sided crap fest

for the team that lost it wasn't a gg

and the team that won probably steam rolled a victory

Fair enough if you want to type gg to you're team mates for a game well played but typing gg in general chat just makes you look a cnut

Because you know there's likely to be some angry kids on the losing side, saying GG is just a friendly way of calming them down ;)

I always thought GG was a respectful way of saying thanks for the match.

So you play just to win not for fun just to win.

I have had lots of games that my team has lost and a lot are great fun. Do you shout and throw your teddy in the corner if you don't win..........:child:

Even when stomped, usually there are a few players on the enemy team who tried their best and had a gg.

I think of it as a sign of respect and appreciation to those brave enemies - though it is wrongly interpreted occasionally as me trolling the enemy.

Note to one self.... type GG more often in games.  Some times when a team gets steam rolled there still a few players on the losing side that puts up a fight..... GG is for them.

No where in my post did I mention I play to win or that I don't have fun many close games played have been fun and indeed a gg but typing that after a total sham of a battle just seems insulting. And no my toys are not out of the pram the fact I'm still alive near the end of the game to see the pointless gg comments is testament to that if I die early after playing poorly I'm in another match straight away

I will GG my own team in case of a win regardless on the style of the win.

I will GG the enemy team in case of a close battle that was won by my team.

I will accept a GG from the enemy team in case of a close battle that was lost by my team as a sign of recognition for our effort.

I consider a GG from the enemy team in case of a steamrolling defeat as pure mockery, adding insult to injury and thus down vote accordingly.

Well, it used to be something like that, but with the way multiplayer gaming is these days, I don't know. Think the only place it really still has something like that is in 1v1. Also mostly seem to be strategy from my experience.

Some of the teams I've been in lately my feet could have played a better game it's hard not to be the best player in an utterly shambolic team finishing top in these teams doesn't nessassarly make it a gg either and typing it every match actually takes away its impact if you do indeed have a good game

GG used to be a general compliment and a thank you to all players involved for the match. Who won or by what margin wasn't important. It was simply polite and a show of respect. You can still see it in professional e-sport.

Today in random online games we have players who do not care about this etiquette and feel insulted if someone compliments them for no apparent reason. They never learned about it and a lot of them don't want to accept it once they do.

Im one of those who write GG to the general chat when my team looses in moistre of respect and a good fight even if I were stomped. Even if i am angry about my faults in the game i compliment the best player/s on the enemy team and in on my own one. I only report the poorly players and the ones who annoyed me with their decision making.

When im on the winning team I usually write GJ ( good job) on team's chat congratulating the good play and proceed to compliment the good players from both teams if I have enough compliments and then I proceed to GG on the general chat to all the other players.

For me its a sign of giving value and proximity to/with other players and showing respect, the fun and good play.

I come from Starcraft2 where the 1v1 rages were quite bigger and harder to moderate in one-self so I try to always stay possitive and give the value the other players have and their good actions.

I think thats why I have 54 of karma, just to point it out. :)

#this, with the corrections

Even had a discussion with Flamu in a game a while ago, when he wrote "gg",  while half of my team thought they where with greenpeace and counted trees, at T9

If I could say GG after the battle and during the battle report screen then it would probably reinforce better its true meaning.

Saying it before wining/losing might indeed cause some misunderstandings....

That's an odd thing to get riled up for ... congratulating everyone on a good game is common courtesy, like saying good bye to people who're leaving.

It's a recognition of everyone's efforts and even in an utter curbstomp game, effort was given. Unless the winner was quite obviously trying to mock the defeated team (which is never done with a simple "gg"), there is no need to react belligerent. Don't be a poor loser.

[...] and typing it every match actually takes away its impact if you do indeed have a good game

That's what "vgg" is for.

Not so long ago i had a teammember that would post a gg to the enemy team after every ship he sunk - when i told him how his behaviour could be seen has insulting and mocking he went on a rant how i am not his mom and he can do whatever he wants because on the internet there are no rules like talking to "real" people.

I am just baffled how people just mimick what they have seen in some youtube video without understanding its meaning.

So yes, i agree - people should stop doing that.

Imo you can respond to a gg when a member of the losing side or the player you just sunk wrote a gg first. If you want to complement your team or one of your allies please do that in teamchat.

I will stick to "gj team" when we stomped them or made a glorious comeback and my team was not full of entitled flamers.

I GG enemies who play well, no matter if they win or lose. But I will mostly reserve that for individual players in which case I will adress them directly like : GG %playername% you totally wiped me clean XOR GG %ship% you played really well, my compliments!.

If I GG an entire enemy team, it's usually just rubbing some salt in their wounds. But if you get riled up over that, you shouldn't be playing this game imo. Would you rather people were actually honest and wrote: you sucked so hard this game I wonder if you got dropped on the head a lot growing up / some other withy remarks considering skill or lack there off?

I gg in /all chat if I felt it was a well balanced match which I had fun playing in.

I gg in /team chat if I felt my team played well. I might throw in a wp if other people on my team were particularly good or in /all if the opposition outclassed us.

I'd recomend to just stop using gg altogether since it lost its nice meaning a long time ago.

Be prepared for whe the "gg ez" comes.

... I suddenly feel very old.

Older than usual, I mean.

I dont find the GG old and not usable anymore, nor to say that lost its meaning...

In other games where teams are clearly stacked (team fortress 2, battlefield) , and the unbalance causes one team to be stuck in their spawn the entire round, along with the winning team refusing to autobalance. Then the whole "gg" at the round's end can feel like a mocking middle finger.

But in warships there is no autobalance or spawn camping. So "gg" comes across as more genuine.

(Unless of couse as mentioned above it's followed by "ez", then yeah, f**k that guy!)
