Hi folks, I just started playing over the weekend. Some of you might have noticed a wild Chester steaming right into the heart of the nearest fight with a big smiley face hand painted on the bows, ladies underwear streaming from the mast aerials and strings of tin cans hanging over the stern, all guns blazing away in every direction except towards the enemy (usually because the idiot in charge forgot to take his guns off bearing lock when he realised that the enemy were not where he expected them to be) and his big fat hull attracting every torpedo in the game like a turd attracts flies.

Seen that one, have you?

I'm mostly playing co op while I get my head around all the controls (just discovered the 'c' key and am enjoying being my own back seat driver! It's very useful for watching the enemy fleet while I run away). But I'll dip my toe in the big boys pond now and then. If I'm on your side, I'll try not to get you killed. I promise! And I'd be much obliged if you could return the favour! ;-)

Cheers

SS

Hey there SonofaSailor, welcome aboard the fleet and I hope you have a pleasant stay. Don't forget to discipline your forward gunners, I will be counting on you shooting the enemy ships when we're in battle together!

Ahoy SonofaSailor!

Welcome aboard, I hope we can meet on the high seas sometime. I guess with ladies underwear streaming from your mast aerials you will be easy to spot :D

Well, as you offered... I've got three 6 inch guns lined up on your bearing. If you could be a dear and turn broadside on and come to a full stop? That would be a huge help!

The upside is everyone recognises me pretty quickly and it's a great ice breaker when meeting new people and trying to kill them. The downside is that I can't see anything through my range finder because I've got lacey black knickers blocking my view!

Welcome aboard.

Always room for people wanting to actually learn game and its mechanics like what ship controls do.

If wanting ideas/help for driving some ship check for examples Mighty Jingles, DezGames and iChaseGaming in youtube.

And preferably you should also check at least specs of ships you'll meet because knowing the enemy is half the victory.

And when you get to tier IV ships you'll want to hope not meeting my Gremyashchy in enemy team...

Well met!

I could recommend Aerroon and Flamu as well, they put out some nice content including some good advice and excellent examples of play with commentary.

And when you get to tier IV ships you'll want to hope not meeting my Gremyashchy in enemy team...

Is there anything that could convince you to play another ship? I mean, well... you know what I mean...

Cheers, M

Here's something to start looking into game

There are plenty of class/ship specific guides.

Is there anything that could convince you to play another ship? I mean, well... you know what I mean...

Hmm.. maybe having players consistently doing their jobs so that I don't have to be concerned about shooting and torping every enemy?

Because right now usually if you want something done you better be ready to do it yourself.

And Esa could stop that seal clubbing:trollface:

It's not my fault match maker gave enemy team 5 vs 3 tier VIs and 6 vs 4 tier Vs rest of the team couldn't handle.

And after having secure grip from victory by points they came for my cap meaning they were in need of educating.

As trivia that amount of shells fired is equal to over 12 minutes of non-stop gunning.

Well the best advice I could possibly give is (having only reached tier V) if you are in an American cruiser, spam high explosive!!! Just kidding, I say that because I just one shot a Murmansk with HE from 14km 2 mins into a game. 26, 800 health, he was quite gracious about it but I still apologised profusely XD. AP works well against cruisers sailing broadside on.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I will have to start taking notes while watching these videos! At the moment I'm getting my head around text comms and the map. I'm sure I saw a way to bring up I.D. information on a ship on the map view, and to designate a ship as a target or for protection.

Meanwhile, I've finally earned my St. Louis! Ten guns! Mwhahahahahaa I was rubbing my hands together with evil glee as I logged in, imagining the devastation I would bring as I screamed around the map, knocking the excrement out of all the little Hermelins and Eries and scaring off the Dresdens and pounding anything that was Japanese into little pieces of origami. Then the game dropped me into a battle with about ten big BBs on either side, and my little St. Louis was one of two cruisers and was right at the bottom of the list! Wibble!

S'not fair :-(

You'll love the Phoenix, it is like the St. Louis in the way that it delivers a death by a thousand cuts but it is as fast as some DD's ;)

Oh and don't forget to enable your replay's if you have the storage.

Actually St.Louis is one kind of BB itself. It just pretends to be a cruiser. Once you gain experience go and try Tenryu. It's a great ship if played correctly. And the best thing with Tenryu is to rush into side of lonely St.Louis (or anything else that is slow) and send it to the Ironbottom Sound with torps. But! These cruiser torpedo tactics need some balls of steel and Iceman style coolness to be successful. And experience. I can't point it out too much: don't rush tiers and don't move to the next tier if you don't feel that you have learned enough. I have seen players who have just rushed trough the tiers without actually learning anything on the way.

And one thing. Don't buy premium ship bundles. If you want to know more about bundles and why not to buy them, go to gameplay section.

It's best simply to Alt+Tab into Windows after the match and delete replay straight away if it isn't remarkable.

Mhm yes I been so vocally saying there is nothing wrong right?

Maybe stop insinuating things, everyone can view my post history so maybe stop making insinuations like a little troll unless you can give some evidence alright?

That's a good boy, now back to your room ok?

I fully understand what  you 'tried to do' but I just told you it's not 'proper' in a friendly manner to tell people what to do, I will bet you your [edited] I'm not the only one thinking that way and maybe someone else isn't as friendly as me :red_button:

Maybe next time, let him make up his own damn mind and not be a crybaby like usual.

Just link to proof please, that way I promise I will shut up ok? If you don't, you're just trolling.

edit: you were right, you were not the one I had in mind posting about the GE cruisers being broken constantly ( in a non constructive manner, there is nothing wrong with having arguments as to why a certain line is good or bad ). Now that I've actively gone through things and corrected my mistake, could you please substantiate your insinuations as well just out of courtesy?

Actually St.Louis is one kind of BB itself. It just pretends to be a cruiser. Once you gain experience go and try Tenryu.

I've got a Tenryu! Haven't got a clue how to use it but already prefer it to the Chikumi, which I hated. My first time out in a Tenryu I got into a slug fest with a S. Carolina! I was surviving because I kept slinging torps at him, which forced him to keep turning stern on to me, and in between reloads I was busy pinging my tiny AP shells off his stern turrets, which was probably giving him a headache. But when I finally nailed him, part of my spread carried on towards the centre of the map and sank an allied Phoenix!

:hiding:

Damn things go for miles! Where's the self destruct?

No, didn't like the Chikumi. The Chikumi is made of paper, shoots paper balls and has the guns in all the wrong places. I sold it. By comparison, even though I have the St Louis I'm keeping the upgraded Chester because it's everything the Chikumi should have been.

Going to stick with the St. Louis for now until I've digested a couple of videos on torpedo tactics.

Don't bother shooting smallish caliber APs at BBs...

Maybe except when having 90 degree side angle from close range (or can shoot through weak bow/stern "shell" to armored bulkheads protecting citadel/magazines) and even then you prefrerably want 203mm gun.

Use HEs and aim at weakly armored parts like deck/superstructure for damage and fires.

Also BBs usually have only light armor in bow and stern so HEs hitting them can give decent damage. (plus chance of causing fire)

HE's also break equipmen/secondary guns.

As for torps remember there's no such thing as friendly torpedo once it's launched.

Also before going into battle check range of torps you have.

In fact choosing torps as wepon shows range of torps as circle around your ship in minimap.

That's handy for visualizing if enemy ship's course will take it into torpedo range when working with short range US torps.

That works als ochecknig if there are own team ships in range.

But really you want always to shoot torps away from own team ships unless there's island behind enemy stopping target missing torps.

Thanks, Esa.

More questions! On the St. Louis the secondaries never seem to engage. Then I noticed that their range was only 0.9km and nothing has got that close, yet. However, if something does come within range of the secondaries, will they shoot automatically along with the mains, or do I have to individually select the secondaries using CTRL before they will open fire?

The comms screen: can I control the colour of the text? Mine is a faded green and it's very difficult to read. I saw one of Baron's videos and his was a nice bright white that was easy to see.

And finally, the easiest one! ;-) When exactly should I use AP? I know there is lots of discussion on this but, as an example, I have mostly ignored AP while using the St. Louis and have probably not done very well against bigger targets as a result. HE against destroyers and light cruisers is obvious, but I've seen videos in which AP is used against things like a Chester or Dresden which would surely over penetrate?

And then there's the other question: AP at short range or long? At long it will plummet and go through decks. Short range it will bounce off a battleship's belt armour. But what about cruisers? I would have thought that plummeting fire with AP would just over penetrate and not explode.

So many questions!
