Regarding Nephilimer's Ranked Battles Opinions

I wanted to post this as a response to Nephilimer’s perspective on ranked battles.

 

Hello,

 

Season 2 of ranked games began. I should post this topic a bit earlier but now its the right time to do it. As a awarded as "best" player in the previous season I started to play Season 2 and I was able to achive Rank5 as second, but I'm done with ranked games in this season anymore. Why? I will point a reasons and I hope we will discuss about retarded (sorry, no other words to decribe it) rules on new season. Also I expect someone from WG side in thread (And I hope ranked player also).

 

 

I will get this gripe off my chest before I go on; for someone who berates ‘statpadders’ I find it annoying that every post he makes he refers to himself as the ‘best’ player on EU, having got rank 1 soonest. There will always be someone who has less family / social commitments at the start of a season and gets rank 1 first, that doesn’t make them the best. No, he did not get rank 1 in the least number of battles or with the highest W/R, please stop claiming that.

 

I was on Twitch watching Nephilimer play and basically he raged after losing a few (mediocre) games, blaming his team. Later on his post appeared saying what a joke ranked battles are. Draw your own conclusions.

 

1. Annoucing ranked game mode 1 day before season starts. I know in WG just no one cares about gamers at all, but I dont believe no one understands the need of preparation to next season. Tiers and start model were unknown to us. Essential things to all players - what ships we have to prepare for rankeds was missed. Of course WG eanred a lot of money in case of this, because captain retraining and grinding new ships was impossible in one day only (especially to high ranked players, who got 16+ points captains). WG messed up completely when season not even started.

 

1. Announcing ranked game mode 1 day before season starts. I actually agree with him on the first point, it would have been nice to know tiers / format in advance so I could at least make sure I had the credits to buy the right ship and start training the right captain. As it happened, I had been training my Farragut for the season and then started at rank 10 and couldn’t use it. I then would have to spend dubloons retraining to Mahan, which I couldn’t unlock anyway because of no credits. Minor gripe however, WG is never the best and I understand they are still experimenting. Adapt and move on.

 

2.  18 rank system and irrevocable ranks. I know WG want to satisfy the morons - morons spend more money in this game than clever guys. But after the season 1 - when I need only 6 gamedays (i wait another 6 for players) to achieve max rank, they decided to shorten the way. FFS, rly? Make the grind way with 45% WR easier! Why not! We need more morons on high rankeds. Ok, but morons can drop the stars... Ermmm... What now? Make a massive numer of irrevocables! With irrevocable 10th rank every carried idiot will ruin gameplay on the 10-6 MM group forever. Good job WG.

 

2. 18 rank system and irrevocable ranks. I disagree here, and 18 rank system is far less daunting and will hopefully attract more players to the mode when coupled with good rewards. I think he is missing the point of ranked battles entirely, this is not a highly competitive esports mode; it is just a bit more competitive than randoms. I am happy that lower-skilled players can achieve rank 1 if they are determined enough, it is a game mode open to all and for everyone to enjoy. We will have to wait for team battles if you are after competitive play. Irrevocable ranks is a good part of this, everyone has been on the sore end of a losing streak in WoWS and in ranked battles it is just too painful.

 

3. Cross tier ranked and positioning from previous season. WG thinks cross tier rankeds are more skilled than non one. [edited]. Skill is not tier dependent. Also they resigned to use good 6-7 format for 5-6 and 7-8. Right after mess up with overpenetrations and 0 1 RNG damage model. Sure, why we want to promote dynamic mode with nice battles - better make rankeds random citadel contest. Why now, sounds good in WG way. About positioning. In season one almost every, event worst player was able to get high rank in 500 or more battles. Now WG throw this players to 9th rank with 10th rank irrevocable. Combine this "players" with another morons coming from the irrevocable in general lower side of ranked system. Sounds good to me, I cant play any battle without being frustrated by idiots.

 

3. Cross tier ranked and positioning from previous season. I have to admit I don’t understand half of what he wrote here, the English wasn’t quite up to what he was trying to explain. The second half is again about ‘idiots’ and ‘morons’ ruining his gameplay mode where only the super-elite should be allowed. Sigh.

 

4. For sure allowing player to pick stock tier 7 in 7-8 ranks are superb idea. That was a problem before, but now its even more massive in games. I understand the idea of grinding ships thru rankeds, but really, stock Myoko/Nagato? Without the limit of battles/experience on ship needed to play ranked, this kind of [edited]will rise and rise. Of course morons can do this forever - thanks to irrevocable rank 10.

 

4. For sure allowing player to pick stock tier 7 in 7-8 ranks are superb idea. Is this such a big deal? Ok, not the best thing to bring to random battle but it’s not a criminal offense to try and grind a ship whilst playing ranked. Perhaps he would like only people flying 8 flags to be able to play too, if you aren’t running max flags you obviously aren’t taking it seriously enough or are an ‘idiot’ who is unable to get them?

 

Ii is impossible to play now at competitive level. Now system is even worse than Season 1 10-1 MM group, where at least top players were able to kick out weak ones to 11th again and again. Now morons are safe with rank 10 ans are able to destroy your gameplay anytime. With 5-2MM group problem is not solved, because due to massive spam of idiots on rank 10, even weak player can go into 5th rank quite easily. Skill contest is now changed to "how many morons you got in team this time".

 

From my perspective, there is no any sense to play rankeds and being on the top again. I think I can be on the top again (there are only few real competitors in this season, I miss  guys from the Season 1), especially when I finished second as 5th (with Yoshi as first, so same duo on the top, only places switched) but I dont have any fun of struggling aganist not the good players, but hordes of brainless "players".

 

And he finished with a minor rant about being unable to kick bad players back to rank 11, as said earlier I like this failsafe… If someone is determined enough and has put in the time to get to top 10 then why should they be kicked back down the ranks just because they aren’t good enough to play with Nephilimer? As for being ‘top again’… no. you did it soonest, that is not a great measure of skill, just time played. 'The few competitors', from what I gather on your twitch when you say competitors you basically mean the guys you are on vent / teamspeak with while playing and congratulate each other and pat each others backs every time you win and achieve something faster than anyone else.

 

Good luck to others, someone will pick my place on the Throne. Currently I will focus on my RU account and I will participate in Season 3 in RU region. EU is laughable now.

Calling people morons and idiots is counter-productive, please take this elitist attitude elsewhere. Ranked battles are still finding their feet and need tweaking, you throwing toys out of your pram is not helpful or constructive. Sorry for the massive post, I felt this needed a rebuttal.

Irrevocable up to rank 14 is, well, silly. It will just concentrate "less than average" players at this rank, since they can't drop down. It would e much better to have every second rank as irrevocable, since then we would spread the players across some ranks at least.

@NR107 And of course, there only few very good players in this season at the first group at "5-2". Unfotrunately some players from this group is from same WoWS team, so we are on teamspeak (maybe because we are playing together? It can't be!).

I think his points were lost because of the perspective he came from. He entirely missed the point of what WG was trying to achieve and what effect that it had on gameplay. I enjoy ranked battles immensely, but I do feel the frustration of having teammates who do silly things or go afk. WG have tried to incentivise playing ranked battles (reducing ranks, better rewards, irrevocable ranks etc), but this has had the effect of people playing for rewards. This increases the amount of afk & bots around which is obviously very bad. I don't have an issue with 'bad' players as long as they turn up and try their best and don't go afk. It can be frustrating but if you are a good player you will always have an average of 50%+ to win and a bad player will have less than 50% chance to win (on average), so naturally good players will tend to progress and bad players will not. This is a general rule anyway, it won't apply 100% of the time because RNG.

 

I would be interested to know what actual improvements would make ranked better?

 

For a start I think teamkilling / afk should at least result in a ban on being able to play ranked for x number of battles / days. Botting should be account banned.

I personally dislike Ocean map at the best of times, I hate it in ranked!

MM could use some work, playing with 4 destroyers per team is not fun. I also think MM should deal with situations where one team will have all IJN destroyers and the other team has a mix of RU and US destroyers. In my experience the IJN destroyers get decimated.

Headstart for players based on previous season is unnecessary?

 

I think it is laudible that WG are trying to fix ranked and get more people playing it, however I fear that it will die a death if they cannot get it right as most people just don't enjoy playing it for one reason or another.

I'd only skimmed his post as it was obvious from the start it was going to be a load of waaaaaaaaaah.  Seems some are taking an obviously casual game far too seriously, seems a bit dumb.  If you want to judge yourself against others its probably best to go play a proper competitive game, that way other people will probably recognise your acheivements also.

You are correct, I guess I am a little bit of an attention seeker too I am new to posting on the forum, but have enjoyed reading it for a while. I guess this is my way of venting about the negativity emanating from some people, it just wound me up, so I apologise, will use the reply function in future.

Nobody takes away your achievements, it clearly gets filtered out and those, who're really hard-trying level up, unless you're super lucky noob, who always gets paired up with 6 pro players on the team, but..

 

Thing is, you can have the best WWs aimbot, cheats, hacks, be the best player in the universe, but if you end up vs. 2 fully upgraded Fusos with Admiral cpts. in them and likewise built the rest of the enemy team and then you wind up with 2 morons, who just bought their Kongos on your team, not even engine or range upgrade, then even if every shot you fire lands a citadel, the math is math and you just lose, there's no hidden magic super-skill play style, which can get you from such situations.

 

So yeah, I think, video games of this sort are destined to be plagued by this sort of conversations forever, as in: "omagad, it's impossible to win" vs. "nah, bro, you just suck". When there's a 1v1 ladder, we'll see, how this guy is really good, but my best guess is, half the streamers or people, who play frequently would take on him easily and even then, it's f*cking impossible to determine, because the way the game engine works, you can't control your dispersion and most of the time, you're shooting a 2 or 3 cm small smudge on your screen, so there goes the LOL

 

The moral of the story is: who cares? Play, have some fun, don't bother with other people, it's not worth losing more than 10 seconds over it.

Unlike our drama queen, he could achieve it without complaining about noob teams, without whine threads on forum, rants, insults, he just did it with good play, skill and luck.
