My New Orleans seems to be citadeling other cruisers more easly since yesterday, even at long distances. Got 3 citadels on angled Clevelend(45-60 degree) in one salvo at 10km. Also 1 shot Aoba at 12km who was showing me his broadside.

But my NO also feels much more prone to citadels as well. I can bounce other cruiser AP shells when I'm angled (as before) but it feels like im being citadeled much more easly by battleships even when I angle perfectly(showing only bow/stern), in compare to before 5.1

Got hit for 25k by Tripitz at 14km when moving away from him, showing only my stern. Got also citadeled on few other occasions, at various distances, while angling and not showing broadside. Thought that original 5.1 citadel bug fix was supouse to reduce number of citadels. But It feels quite opposite.

Thats what im talking about :)

Before 5.1.0, there was a bug cousing some shells hitting top of citadel registering as citadel hits, while they should bounce of citadel(overpenetrate or normal 33% pen). Now when its fixed in 5.1.1 there should be overally a bit less citadel hits than before 5.1.0. But im feeling the oposite. I wonder if they didnt messed something up in 5.1.1 while fixing the 5.1.0 bug(citadels not registering under water).

So far I'm on 100.000-110.000 average damage with Des Moines, which is great for a cruiser I guess. Survivability isn't high because of her size, but the fun the ROF gives makes up for it. I usually just park it behind an island so enemies can't shoot back and I let loose the guns. Fires everywhere. Anyone who dares to come close is usually evaporated quite quickly with AP. Yesterday a Yamato decided to come around the corner of an island with his broadside showing. I pumped him full of AP and did 8000-10.000 damage per salvo (front guns only) until he got lucky and destroyed both my front guns with his second salvo. It was fun though.

AP is really good now, especially against the more armored targets like Tirpitz, Iowa, Montana and Yamato. Shells don't overpen as much (I found Izumos are hard to do full damage on) and do 5000-10.000 damage per salvo on their broadside. Every 6 seconds.

Hmm i should try that tactic, right now im doing 90k average in DM and i love facing lone yamatos, they burn so good :)

Should probably try AP soon though, still have only fired a single salvo of AP and the target got destroyed before i landed the shells.

I recently played Des a lot. It got better, that's for sure. I rarely drop below 100k average, and actually right now im looking at 90k average on this bad boy. AP works against cruisers from around 12 - 13 km resulting in multiple citadels and short work. No Zao/Hindenburg can go toe to toe with Des on close ranges. Above 13 km though it's still a gamble, and above 15 km you will lose more likely.

Against BB's I still tend to go for superstructure, it grants 6 - 8k salvoes if I can land them reliably.I still shoot mostly HE, but AP is more viable on close combat brawls. Actually, I think it might go up in ranking soon.

Interesting reads.

I took out my Des for 3 battles after 5.1 and still performed like a bot. I think I have to try again, because server-stats show +25% (!) incresed damage for the DM.

But it is possible I just cant work with those shell-arcs and me and Des will never be friends. Those catapults drive me crazy.

Did you have the same problem with the Cleveland - or are the shell-arcs worse on Des Moines?

I don't have DM but Baltimore, which supposedly have the same guns when upgraded except RoF. Shell velocity and trajectory is close to that of a Cleveland, although heavier 203 shells lose velocity tad slower than 152 (17s to reach 17.6km in Cleve, 14s to reach 18.4km in Balti).

Well I sucked in Cleveland too. I was much better in Pensa - other than the majority of people. Des M does have a bit better arcs/shellspeed, but not by so much that it becomes enjoyable for me. Shells are still in the air for riddiculously long times compared to IJN CAs.

Gotta love how battleships always complain about fires. 229 HE shell hits, 8 fires. Thanks RNG.

i had 158 hits on a single yamato once. Only 2 fires!

Sometimes RNG is simply trolling you beyond belief.

Well it did just enjoy a 25% increase in average dmg. I think they should be very careful about more buffs because it´s one step away from shitting on everything in the game.

If you are refering to "Statistic galore" topic, it was actually less than 20% increase and you have to keep in mind that the data was from the week after 5.1 patch, when there was quite massive armor/AP bug(BBs not citadeling cruisers). So we dont know how much of this damage/xp increase was coused by buffs and how much by the bug. We will have to wait for more recent data(after this bug was fixed) to get any reliable info.

Des m is still underperforming in stats its sad they cant fix it-_-

It takes time to balance these things, it's pretty delicate. The AP ammo buff was quite major, it give a nice boost in average damage across the server. Now they just need to collect the new statistics and further adjust things.

I'd say a slightly better arc / shell velocity would be the most obvious way of fixing it, with the other solution being to adjust the size of the citadel which is probably too unrealistic.

I'm on 110.000+ average damage currently, which is good for a cruiser I assume. The Des Moines is a bit similar to WoT's AMX 50B. It's a special vehicle that requires a very certain play style most people can not handle, so the average guy underperforms while the above average guys do fine. Although apparently I'm the world #1 Des Moines player so my opinion is probably a bit biased.

Actually Sander, that's best average dmg on all servers, so you're pretty badass :D My recent (last two weeks averages) oscillate around 110 -  120k, but I already has 100 games in it, so I'm pretty experienced.

I think Des performs now better then pre 5.1/5.1.1, but still it has some issues which hold him back to be a good/very good cruiser. Mainly citadel size/toughness and shells trajectory and speed.

Other then that it's decent :D
