Good non premium low tier ships

Which ship (max tier V I'd say) is a good start for beginners, as in user friendly and effective? As of now I want to get better with DDs, and I've found the Tier II IJN DD to be quite good with upgraded torps, but I'd like to know if I should focus on some other branches because I've heard bad things of USN and IJN Tier III DDs.

Thanks :)

St Louis is the favourite of many. High HP and lots of guns make it an idea ship for new players

Tier 2: Dresden with AP ammo and Umikaze

Tier 3: St. Louis and Derzki

Tier 4: Phoenix and Isokaze

Tier 5: Furutaka and Minekaze.

T2: Strozhevoi (or something like that) was quite fun for me, Umikaze as well

T3: St.Louis, Tenyru

T4: Kuma, Wyoming, Clemson, Isokaze

T5: Omaha, New York, Kongo, Minekaze

Those are all the ships I've enjoyed playing :)

Well, I was of this opinion as well, until recently. Now I see that HE spamming seduces people into "pew pew pew..." - just firing all the time, staying in binoculars view and not seeing anything else (neither minimap nor where they are going). Easy, ok, but that might mean that many will stay noobs.

Many belive so yes, but St.Louis is a killer with AP.

^ Exactly this. Many players just do not realise how much damage the St Louis can do with AP.

Definitely some truth in this, with high volume firing ships like the St. Lous it can be very tempting to just stay zoomed in with the LMB pressed down continually, I'm still a bit too prone to do so myself, although I always keep at least half an eye on the map and have a RMB look around every so often.

I think it's still a newbie-friendly ship though, great firepower, not quite as sluggish as you'd think from looking at it and quite forgiving, particularly if your enemy doesn't realise it's all about a waste to fire low-caliber AP at it.

Yup. Once a phoenix and a Murmansk decided to jump me while alone in my Louis. I shot AP back and was the one who sailed away alive. :D

Oh wow I would have never actually guessed that. Won't AP overpen the DDs or cruisers that try to attack me?

I actually didn't think about the Russian line, I thought they were all bad ships actually. "Funny" How there are no german ships in your list. :P

Ap may overpen DDs yes, and can have a hard time penning BBs. But AP will just 'vaporize' cruisers.

The trick is to know which ammo to shoot at which type of target.

Easy rule of thumb; HE against DDs and BBs, AP on CCs and CVs (Though it can be usefull to shoot some HE at CVs to start fire before shooting AP to kill it fast (with fire you stop the launching of planes)).

I found T5 Nicholas more enjoyable than Clemson because of notably increased range of 127mm gun, little better stealth and faster speed.

I've just barely started to look into the USSR DDs. Actually not having that bad of a run with the Storozhevoi, 3 kills over the 2 last battles, which is pretty decent for me(one was a total kill steal though :p). Its guns are good, just insanely slow to turn, so I have to un-train both my IJN and US DD playstyle. Your torps are utter garbage, so you'd assume it would be an in-your-face gun brawler, but it's not that either.

Storozhevoi was kinda fun as soon as i forgot that i have torps. Most people i see tend to try to use them and they end as free frag.

My low tier favourites:

I - Orlan - quite fun to sail compared to other tier I ships

II - Dresden

III - Nothing really. St Louis would be obvious answer, but often i got on the bigger maps with tier IV ships, and there combination of pathetic speed and range sapped all fun for me.

IV - Phoenix, Kuma

V - Omaha, Kongo, Konigsberg

I love the Omaha. A lot more than the St. Louis actually, it has a nice rate of fire and the range is awesome. The St. Louis just feels too slow for me and when you're low-tier you can get picked off by stuff that can just stay out of your range quite easily using their speed.

Well I wanted to add Kolberg and Konigsberg but lots of people dislike them and find them hard to play...

It is, but I found it a bit harder to play, that's why I didn't put it on the list

It's a slow tub in deed. Look at the Louis as a small BB. Never be alone, always try to stay with the pack.

If you get into situations were you're alone against one or two enemy ships, try to angle your ship towards them (0-45') and go brawl (never give them your broadside though).

Aim your AP at the waterline, center of mass (most likely to get those citadel hits), aim HE at the superstructure (starts fires).

Thanks, I got told by a guy during a game that an effective strategy with it is locking your rudder and constantly turning, is it true?

Jingles 'circle of death' :D

Well, in low tier games where you face players without experience this can be useful. But when you get to face players with experience, they will kill you easy.

So I would not recommend it in the long run.
