Wait am I using the aiming reticle in Sniper View wrong?

atm I'm moving a number of notches over by the travel time of the shell. Sometimes it seems to work, other times my shots go wildly off course and I seem to be having a better time aiming by eye.

the one  full notch  = one second rule holds for a ship travelling @ 20kts.

if it's going faster, you need to modify that. 25 knots = add 1/4 again, 30 knots = add half again, etc.

also if the ship is angling away or towards you, you need to modify the number of notches being used, and you kinda have to do that by eye after figuring it out by trial and error.

would seriously be nice if the HUD gave you an estimated speed instead of exact distance... something you already get by hitting ALT...

eh, sure, it'd help, but it'd be a step towards aiming being entirely a matter of maths rather than involving acquired skill.

that said, it's usually not all that hard, most people charge ahead at either 3/4 or full throttle. learn ships speeds, work this stuff out.

game can't lead everyone by the hand in everything.

You can estimate a ships speed by looking at the funnel smoke. Half the fun is this judgement - and the ability to vary your speed to put people off.

The whole game revolves about movement prediction, you take that away with to much "help".

Give it time, you'll learn the ships, the speeds, the slight rudder shifts.

It will come natural after a while and you won't spend more than a few seconds in sniper view before the next shot.

It's usually an acquired skill, using the "notch" work only with a ship moving parallel and with a fixed speed, it's help but you need a "try".

Usually after i have chose a lead, i proceed with a "forcella", a shoot a little long, a shoot a little short, and watch in order to adjust lead and direction.

The fall of shot is very much that as practised by all navies prior to the advent of com[edited]risation. I think the game is spot on in this respect. Excepting point blank range every salvo fired will have a percentage of hits and misses, just like real naval battles.

I think the developers have this bang on, its the same as naval gunnery before the com[edited]r took over. In every salvo fired a percentage will miss the target, (which is why they fire salvos).

Sorry for the 2 posts above.

Thats what the smoke is for. You can judge the speed by the smoke. Thats probably the simulation part in WOWs where you have to know how fast the different ships are using the smoke for judgement. Realtbhuion already explained the notch. Angeling of the vessel you can see on the minimap.

Thats one of the reasons why a aim mod that doesnt hack the server will never truely work in this game.

You can also judge a ship's speed by it's wake (the wave it creates from it's movement). The longer the white line behind it the faster it is going.

a p u t e is a goose in german, so you could use it in an insult I guess.

edit: it might be a turkey

I havent bothered with the mill dots, I assumed from the start that was for the look only, its good judgement now and if I'm really not sure whether its turned away or towards slightly I'll send out a single ranging shot and modify from there.

Disrepute ?

Now I'm confused if you can have disrepute but not compute. Is it [edited] or puter? (Seriously off topic now)

wait what?!?

I also use the horizontal line of the reticle as a distance guide by lining it up with the top of the main hull, so holding it steady and the hull remains paralell you know the ship is going in a stright line but if it rises or falls it it moving towards away from you.

And for those guns with high firing arcs and slow shell speeds it is a real guestimate for faster moving ships as they have to be led from outside the reticle limits.
