Advice on commanders. which is the best way to run them. move them up with ships, or just get a new commander a ship. as i am at the moment. never thought about it before.

I'm going cheap all the time (Typical Dutch:P) so I just get a new commander with 1 skill with a new ship, retraining takes too much time or too much money.

I always move them up otherwise its a waste of the XP the captain has already gain

I must admit I keep all my ships, and it costs 400 gold to do insta retraining. My other thought is that you never know if there might be a competition or clan wars where you might need a decent commander in a ship in the future.

It's what I do too, and then I try to substitute their lack of skills with my own super skill to make up the difference...not sure why this hasn't worked so far :P

Just moved my Kongo captain to the Fuso today. Lets take a quick look. He has 9 skill points, and retraining (after spending 200,000) is 9250xp. Thats only a few games, and I get my 9 skilled captain back. And its a BB, so it should be quite playable.

On a DD, on the other hand, maybe buying a new guy can be considered better. If I moved my 10 skill point DD captain, that is a lot of games without such basic skills as knowing when you've been detected. I guess it depends on how confident you are of been able to play with that.

Hmm, let me ask a question about retraining.

If I start retraining a captain and then put him on a Premium ship, will the skills work? And can the captain retrain on this Premium ship?

Yes to all the above, it's the best way of retraining. It can be in any premium ship as long as it's the correct nation.

My IJN DD captain gets retrained each time using the yubari.

I retrain mine so my tier 5+ captains have multiple skills

If you get a new commander for every new ship you will have a have a major shortcoming in higher tiers. There you really need those level 4 skills. I keep all my ships but always move the commander up and retrain him ASAP.

Tier 1 -4, i just get a new commander, and usually just the one with the 1 skill point as it only costs silver. Those ships you progress through pretty quickly so retraining isnt really worth the time.

From tier 5+ if its a line im trying to actually level, i will pay the gold to retrain the commander and keep developing his skills.

From tier 5+ if its a line im just doing first wins on to progress it, i keep the commander but pay the 200k silver to 50% retrain him, but still keep developing his skills.

Not sure if I understand this correctly.

If I get a new Tier ship and assign the cap from the previous tier to it...

I should assign him to the premium ship AFTER assigning him to the new ship and let him retrain on the premium and then assign him back?

Im confused and writing those sentences doesn't really help heh. :amazed:

Just for clarification, I don't own a premium ship as I thought it to be a waste of money (Dutch as well here) but as this retraining thing works the way I think it works then I might reconsider and decide it IS a worthy investment...

OK step by step:

Sell first ship (e.g. cleveland)

Choose send captain to reserves.

Purchase next ship (e.g. pensacola)

Choose to purchase without captain.

On pensacola, assign captain from reserves.

Click retrain on captain. Choose either free or 200k silver.

Go to premium ship (that has no captain  in it)

Click assign captain.

Choose "from another ship"

Choose pensacola captain.

Pensacola captain is now in premium ship.

Play premium ship for however many games is needed to complete retraining.

Go to pensacola.

Click assign captain.

Choose "from another ship"

Choose captain that is currently in premium ship.

Captain is now retrained and back in the pensacola.

I'm aware that might make it sound complicated, but it's fairly easy once you've done it once.

I move them to the next new ship in their class and retrain them.  If I want to keep a particularly good ship that I enjoyed or it is a tier 6-7 that I will want to play in ranked matches then I train/pay for a new commander with three bonus skills and grind it quickly to get the tier 4 skill.

Just wait until captain has points for level 5 skill and retraining is in class of 50000-100000xp. (that's already halved)

That's basically dead end for that captain in high tier DDs where it needs all the skills.

I'm aware that might make it sound complicated, but it's fairly easy once you've done it once.

So in short assigning captain from premium ship back to other ship (obviously same nation) he has already been in doesn't incur retraining penalty.

Though that's still lots of retraining to do in that premium ship in case of high skill captain.

But the trick being that captain's skills work in premium ship even during retraining.

That then comes down to how much do I NEED the skills, vs how much would I just find them useful. Agreed that at top end it is a lot of games, that then becomes how well do you do in the premium ship, and how much do you enjoy playing it. If you can average 2k in the atago and enjoy playing it then doing 50 games in that to get 100k doesn't sound too bad.

If you're trying to retrain your US DD captain using the arkansas beta and you hate using BB then that will seem like a very long grind.

Getting a new captain every ships is a bad idea unless 1) at low tiers or 2) you are keeping the ship.

If you are only going to retrain for 200k silver then it is still better to suck up the time without the skills than start again as it will take you ages to get all of the skill points back.  but, as has been mentioned premium ships can be really useful for this...

I always buy new captain with 3 skills (25 gold is really really cheap). It will immediately get the most important skills, and other important ones just little bit later, so later on, I have good captains in every ship, once the grind is over.

Moving captain from ship to another, is just too expensive if you want them to keep skills, instead of working at 50% effectiveness for a very long time.

Buying commanders for gold is waste of money as it is worth only several games of exp to get lvl 3. Retrain with 200K, skills do work but at lower efficiency.

Buying Captain with 3 skills cost only (25 gold) 0,09 euros.... so... I think it's well worth it, rather than playing several games to grind it... Of course, it's everyone's decision...
