USN Tier IV Cruiser (Phoenix)

This ship is undoubtedly the worst ship in the game, it's armour is laughable and the gun/torp setup is akin to that of the Sampson, infact, it's basically a glorified Sampson, which isn't a good thing giving it's in tier IV. I'm looking forward to the Omaha, but goodness me earning 17k XP in this ship will be the death of me. To make things worse I'm coming from the beast that is the St Louis, what a depressing miserable ship the St Louis makes this out to be.

My overall reaction to this joke of a cruiser;

If you think the Phoenix is bad, you should stay away from the Furutaka.

I've heard many woes about the FurryTaco, thankfully I went with USN instead of IJN, although I may make space in my port for an IJN BB as the range of their guns is amazing

both the Pheonix and the Furutaka are great ships and i love them both very much. so it might just be your playstyle or you havent upgraded her yet

If you think the Omaha is anything better ....... good luck.

Your first mistake is thinking that a Scout Cruiser has any armor and your second mistake is that you think that any Cruiser has armor.

Play smart, angle your ship, don't get greedy with the guns.

You're looking forward to the Omaha, a better version of the Phoenix that goes down just as easily, and can face up to tier 7 ships. Yeah...

The Phoenix really isn't that bad, but coming from the St. Louis you may have to alter your playstyle a little. The St. Louis is like a small battleship as far as its speed and manoeuvrability are concerned. The Phoenix (as well as the Omaha) relies a lot more on dodging incoming fire, rather than absorbing it with thick armour.

Nice joke.

Wait, you are serious? :ohmy::ohmy::ohmy:

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL :D:D:D

Phoenix is one of the best and strongest ships in game (tier per tier) together with Kuma, Omaha and Murmansk, these ships are the true rulers of the seas.

I don't see how the Phoenix is bad. I quite like it.

Plenty of guns, ok range, agile and fast. Omaha is an upgraded version pretty much.

lol, it's a pretty OP ship. Great speed, great turn radius, great rate of fire, great turret rotation, great concealment, and it has torpedoes. What do you actually want on a ship? A 30 knots ship with 356mm guns, torpedoes and can't be citadelled? Oh wait, they actually made it, it's called Tirpitz. I hope you bought one. :-p

St. Louis and Phoenix have entirely different playstyles. You should gather some experience with the game before you cry about ships being "the worst" - thats how noobs are born and you dont want to end up being a noob do you? ;)

:amazed:

The Phoenix is a great ship. If you think it's bad then I can tell you that the Omaha is basically the same but with a couple of extra guns and more AA.

Lousy ship stock, but decent enough upgraded.  Omaha is better, more range, an aircraft, way better AA and very good range.  It's also nice that all Omaha's guns are covered, it looses them much less to HE shell hits compared to the Phoenix.  I have both my Omaha and Cleveland captains with advanced fire training now and the Omaha actually has marginally more range than the cleveland.  Sure the armour's garbage. but Omaha's so manoverable that with 17km range I can annoy the hell out of BB drivers by setting them on fire from 17km away while dodging everything they fire back at me!

Stock she lacks firepower, but updated with a 5 gun broadside she's good, against similar opposition. She does suffer against higher tier cruisers (Omaha and the occasional Cleveland you'll see), and being light in armor she can be citadel-ed easily.

Great for hunting destroyers, harassing slow BBs from range, and counters Jap CLs easily

Actually, it's a mini-Omaha.

And it's great.

Either stay at max range, preferably sailing away from enemy ships or use islands to sneak up on or melee duel with enemies and pulverize them with a torp attack. It has a lot of cannons, excellent accuracy, a high rate of fire and decent AP citadel damage against cruisers, a high chance of causing fires on BBs and triple torpedoes on both sides, sure short range, but that's excellent enough for anti-DD defense and anti-CA melee up to tier 6-7 tbh. The sonar special is of course useful to hunt DDs, at which it is very good since it's so maneouvrable and has a high rate of fire with a lot of accurate cannons.

I think you need to rethink how you play the ship if you think it's awful.

EDIT: You only played two matches in it I see. Wut?

ive found the st louise a great training ship for the phoenix class cruiser, learn to take full use of the max firing range and dodge and run while you are peppering the chasing ship.

And the phoenix excells in all this actions, and got torps to boot.

love the american cruiser line..:)

Stock it's absolutely painful, but after you get the 2nd hull, the upgraded rangefinder and eventually the faster-firing gun, it becomes a nimbe gunboat. Fire at range (10-13km), and let the plunging fire do the work. Totally not suited for the close-quarters brawling, but when you find yourself close to an ignorant ship, you can use the torpedos. Many people seem to forget that the Phoenix & Omaha have torpedo's. Always great fun to see your metal shiny cigar plow itself in the side of an unsuspecting BB or CV.

I like the playstyle of the bunker called the St.Louis more, but the Phoenix is doable!

Yes beginning on a phoenix is very hard (I can remember how I hated it at first), but that is because :

- the difference between stock and top config is enormous (especially the number of guns) => if you have some free XP to spare, at least unlock the 2nd hull

- you come from a very very strong cruiser/battleship hybrid and get a light/scout cruiser => you need some battles to adjust your playstyle accordingly.

- you need to start switching between AP/HE shells on cruisers according to you target and the range at which you engage if you want to be effective.

Once you get used to it and have unlocked the modules, you should become a force to be reckoned with. Even a tier 5 BB will get concerned when he'll start getting peppered by your HE shells and 13 km range and he cannot reliably hit you at this range. Remember you're as fast as most DDs, so you're in control of who you engage; when and how.

As in WoT where the greatest threat to a medium tank is a higher-tier medium, the greatest threat to a phoenix is a tier 5-6 cruiser, avoid them unless they are distracted/on low health.
